the 2013 Fan Club 45rpm record...opinions?

  • THIS:
It's two songs without Eddie on vocals (even though he does some backing on Shattered). The '95 single (my favorite) has vocals from Joey Ramone, Mark Arm, the Finn brothers, and an Elvis impersonator. But it has plenty of Eddie as well. Times where somebody else sang (Jeff doing the Ramones, Mike doing Turning Mist) were at least backed by other tunes sang by Eddie. Here, you have two songs not sung by Eddie. Now....if for example they were sung by like Chris Cornell and Neil Young, we'd be like "well...okay....this seems about right." But here, with Jay-Z and Tripplehorn are so far away of what Pearl Jam is usually about, I can understand people thinking "I don't like rap or Julie Andrews. What is this?"

    AND THIS:

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me the fact that Eddie isn't on lead vocals has nothing to do with why i hate this single and think it sucks. If it were any other member of the actual band singing i'd be totally cool with that. I just expect the PJ xmas single to be, you know, pearl jam. Plus, both songs suck. Side B is stupid (and i must say, really self-indulgent on Eddie's part), and 99 Problems is a Jay-Z single. Why i dislike this year's single is not complicated.

Alright well close enough. It's not about Eddie not singing, it's that you want someone in Pearl Jam singing. So it's, you know, Pearl Jam. Even though we've heard Chris Cornell, Beck, Joey Ramone, Mark Arm, an Elvis Impersonator, Corin Tucker, Robert Plant, Ben Harper, Bono and Josh Homme sing on past Christmas singles. But I guess Ed did sing with those people (save for Mark Arm) rather than here where's he's just backing Jay-Z and an actress I've never heard of until two days ago when this single was released.

Well I can't argue an objective opinion. Though I'm not a Jay-Z fan or a fan of this song in particular, I do like "this." Part of it might be because I was at MIA and really enjoyed the surprise of it. But I also suppose that I just like this particular performance of this song. I've always actually disliked Jay-Z and made fun of his supposed "flow", but here, it worked...for me.

Can't argue you second opinion cause I share it; total pretentious bullshit from Ed on side two. And I actually appreciate that sort of novelty song; Julie Andrews singing the Rolling Stones. Nothing against the concept or the girl singing it. Like I said in my last post, it makes for a fun youtube video for people into that sort of thing. But to actually take the time to press this song to a vinyl and distribute it to fanclub members that paid $40 for it? Come on....

  • In the digital age and age of all their live stuff being readily available, it does limit the bands options for the single. But that doesn't change the fact that either of these songs backed with an unreleased b side would be just fine. But putting these songs together is the problem.

I dont chime in often but I really must on this one. PJ on the same stage with JayZ playing his song is complete bullsh*t. Remember when PJ used to stand up for women and women's rights? Playing with JayZ (an artist who has blantant misogynistic lyrics) is just unacceptable. 99 problems but a bitch aint one? Our women (and fan club)deserve better.

Completely agree. I find this pretty disgusting. Hope I never hear Ed talk about women's rights again.

Or maybe the "bitch" isn't a woman. Maybe it's the dog that is searching his car for drugs. At least that's what the lyrics are.

Had they coupled those together on the B-side and put an actual song on the A side.. that would be just fine. But neither song is by Pearl Jam and aren't really performed by them, either.

Ha! Funny. Like Jay Z thought that chorus was going to catch on because it was literally about a cop. Classic...just know that Jay Z is fine using a derogatory term for women to make money.

Not a fan of having Jay Z on the cover of a Pearl Jam single. I get it though, PJ is in marketing and legacy mode right now.

    So are these lyrics acceptable?

Who set the standard, born to be rich?
Such fine examples, skinny little bitch
Model, role model, roll some models in blood

Ed also dropped the 'C' bomb during Fuck Me in the Brain, which was also a bside to a christmas single. Yes it was beeped out on the bside but its very clear during the actual Indio, Ca performance.

Not sure why people are upset over the Jay z thing when ed wrote/sang this stuff around the same time he was talking about women's rights

Nothing in Jay Z's "99 Problems" is meant to be derogatory toward women. The singular antagonists in the lyrics are all men, and the plural antagonists are never implied to be women. While it could be argued that the word "bitch" is derogatory toward women, it's fairly evident that Mr. Z is referring to male "bitch"es in this song.

lift your little dress like light wind, hah, then I slide right in

Funds come in lump sums never ends deferred
Get money like I'm down South Wednesday the 3rd, it's on

    [Chorus]
Dough to get, more shows to rip
I suggest you all roll with the click, who you wit
Frozen wrists and it's flows that's sick
More O's than you know exist, bitch who you wit

Can't scheme on em, Roc-a-Fella got a team on em
Chicks dream on him trick cream on him
Lose it when dudes think it's just music
Lean on em flash green on em and diamond rings on em
Sex around the way girls down to mida's

Now what I look like? Givin a chick half my trap
like she wrote half my raps, yeah, I'm havin that

    [Chorus]

Here's somethin niggaz gon find, not at all funny
We takin all ya bitches, takin all ya money
    Jay-Z rated A.G. baby that's All Good
I sink this ball in your hole, I'm Tiger Woods
If the money was the grass and your ass was tee
when I hit it with this club love you comin with me
Grip you right up under your ass, put your back on the wall
Kinda tipsy, seein triple, so I'm fuckin ya all
You remind me of this dream I had the night before
I'm kinda hopin the condom break to have a reason to go raw
I'm playin, hit the showers, hit the money spot
Where all the models play and big money is dropped
Drop the top, let her feel the moonlight it entranced her
She jumped all in my seat like some private dancer
I tell you somethin new, if you don't hop down off that
butter soft shit with your shoes, I'ma step on the gas
She laughed, put her ass back in the proper place
She said, 'I played my cards right and look I got the ace'
I told her (beatboxes) 'Slow down baby'
You dealin with a baller, who, hold ground crazy it's on

    [Chorus repeat 4X]

    Beyatch! Fucka
    Jigga, nine-seven shit, next millenia
    Recognize, realize, it's on
    Roc the block y'all
    Laugh
    It's on

Yeah, I am so happy Pearl Jam produced a single for him and sent it to theor whole fan club. Great person to collaborate with. :fp:

I must be in the minority here. I love it. The b-side is funny, and the A side rips. I never noticed before that Jeff was holding down the WMA baseline during 99. Its a pretty cool mashup. Also, I think the 10c should be getting huge kudos for sending the single during the holidays. I normally don't care when they send it, but it was a great surprise.

I get that people here may not like hip hop and Jay Z in particular, but to say this dude cant have respect women (or to have the opportunity to change his attitude since a song he cut in 96-97) is ridiculous. This guy has a daughter with and is married to, arguably, the biggest female performer in the world. Beyonce wouldn't stand for that shit and its not like she has ever needed Jay Z.
  • my opinion for the single,
i would like to put in the whole wma/99 problems in the recording, maybe there is areason not to do it
    i like eddie cover,was fun,even better seeing the video,but i prefer a pj performance
we had eddie solo in the past..i prefer pj to play,or some other band member solo-side project work
    IT'S EVOLUTION BABY!!!!!

Also did people take issue with Pearl Jam recording with Cypress Hill who have had tracks being derogatory towards women? Or playing Tibetian Freedom organized by the Beastie Boys whos first album was pretty derogatory towards women?

Its fine if you don't like the song or the artist in question at face value, but to try to hold the record up to an artists past indiscretions is stupid.

Its a cool release. PJ covered one of the biggest songs of the past decade with one of the biggest artists in the past decade. You either like it or you don't. You don't need to read into it much more than that.
  • The b-side is funny,
i really believe thats the word to describe it..afte saw the video,i said was fun..and actually, seems to me not even like a song, was really more like an acting performance
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

Thank you! That should be the final word. If people really still feel the need to attack musicians free speech rights they should at least take the topic to the proper place on the boards and stop filling this thread with rap lyrics from songs that have nothing to do with this years holiday single. Or better yet go take an ebonics linguistics course at community college and at least educate yourselves before firing off knee jerk attacks. For anyone to question Pearl Jam's stance on women's rights because of this 7" is ridiculous.

  • Yes, kudos to 10C. Nice having holiday single prior to Christmas. I think Shattered is great. A nice treat to hear Ed's guitar so clear and up front. I would love to see a vinyl release of a Ed solo show, especially with this level of sound quality.

Side A is another story entirely. I am not a fan of rap. This song is absolute crap. It's an embarrassment. to release THIS as side A of holiday single is a extremely poor choice.
    the all encompassing trip
  • I was glad to receive the Christmas single a few days before Christmas, but not sure how often I will actually listen to it. However, I consider it a nice piece of memorabilia to add to my growing PJ collection!

The thing I like about this single, and all past singles, is that the band put out what they felt like putting out. Whether I like the songs every year or not, I like the fact that the band is giving me a piece of them that isn't being given to the general public. This isn't my favorite holiday single but its not my least favorite either. It surprises me that people are so put off by the band putting out something with rap on it. I thought it was common knowledge that Jeff liked hip hop music. Being that he is a major creative force within the band I wasn't surprised by this release at all. I can't say for sure, but I would assume this collaboration was a lot of fun for him. For better or worse, this was two of the biggest acts in music playing together and I for one am glad they decided to share it with us.
  • Tim SimmonsTim Simmons Posts: 8,045
Stone is the hip hop guy. But that was in the early 90s. Hip hop is so common place not, it wouldn't surprise me if they all enjoy it to some degree.

But I suspect the real push back on this release is because many posters here don't really branch out in their musical tastes beyond some version of white dude with guitar music.
