Not sure if this has been posted, but don't really care. It's a sliver of optimism.

    From Patton Oswalt's Facebook:

    Boston. Fucking horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, "Well, I've had it with humanity."

But I was wrong. I don't know what's going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem -- one human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here's what I DO know. If it's one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in a while, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evildoers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will."

I was watching CNN last night and when they went to commercial I flipped over to Fox. It took Hannity about 2 minutes to politicize this thing. Its sad. He was talking to Mark Fuhrman (who is more credible than Mark Fuhrman right?) and said I don't wanna make this political, I hate to make this political but I gotta say... and then they both went on about how gun control is pointless because people can make bombs. :fp: Just reminded me why I don't watch that globe headed idiot. Seriously, he has a huge head. Its like orange on a toothpick. ;)

Sources told FOX 25 there was an American Airlines flight that was headed to Chicago. There were two men on that plane – not sitting next to each other – and speaking Arabic.

There were some concerned marathoners on the flight so the plane was brought back to the gate and the two men were escorted off the plane.

No other details were immediately available.

    like god damn sputnick.

I feel sorry for people who immediately think this way. This isn't about gun control, this isn't about bomb making supplies control.
Our first thoughts and actions as a nation should be to help in whatever way we can
Second response should be to figure out, after catching them, why they did it and making sure to punish them appropriately (hanging by toe nails, hot spikes in uncomfortable places, etc).
3rd, try to see where the security break down occurred, not to run someone up the flag pole and get people fired, but to see if there was something that could have been done differently.
4th and final, after we figure out what could have been done differently, get back to petty politicization of all things so the terrorists don't win.

it is kind of funny to watch him.. because he is so bad. But if you watch too long you begin to wonder how he is still on the air.. then realize there are a whole bunch of people that respect and believe him. If we continue to be afraid to police the airways.. our country will have large groups that are fed information from the likes of Hannity.

Good god it must be tough being an Arabic speaking person in this country. There are well over a million Arab Americans in the US, the vast majority of whom are just trying to go about the business of living.

One of the most horrific pictures from the bombing that I saw was a man in a wheelchair whose legs were blown off. There appeared to be a man running next to them, holding the victims artery or maybe the tourniquet.

Carlos Arredondo is an anti-war activist who was at the race to honor his dead sons -- one of which was killed serving in Iraq. Arredondo was in Boston to hand out American flags in honor of fallen soldiers. By the end of the day, his last flag would be soaked in blood, used as a tourniquet to save one of the bomb victim's lives.
(*edit, Carlos was not a victim, he ran to help people)

    Here's the fully story:

as the stories come out this shit just gets worse.

and if hannity and the others want to make it political they should talk about the FORTY similar bombings in iraq yesterday.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.
  • This is much more of rhetorical question than anything but why is it necessary to put a horrifically violent picture on the cover of newspapers - http://online.wsj.com/itp?mod=WSJ_formfactor

The cover of the Wall Street Journal today resembles some kind of zombie apocolypse.

Is it motivating people to fight for a change? Not yet
Is it just to make people have a pit in their stomaches for the entire day? More likely

It's been said before but this is all becoming way too normal these days.

Damn, JP. Another horrific layer in this.

As to the Arabic-speaking folks on the plane, yeah. Must be tough. My mom's gotten "those looks" from those who see her dark features, hear her speaking Persian and draw ridiculous conclusions about her. Had I not inherited my father's German features, I'd likely get the same.

Then again, much of what I've been hearing in the news conferences are about people keeping their eyes and ears open. So, the usual PC-ness aside, what exactly is considered suspect? What's out of line?

At this stage of the investigation, any attempt to pin this on an Arabic speaking person is sheer racism. This is an ugliness we don't need right now.

I'm sorry to hear your Mom gets suspicious looks. That's totally unfair.

not to stirr up anything Brian but I'll bet the first thing people thought when this happened was the group
I mentioned had done it or at least they came to mind and with all the distruction this group has been causing around the world and here in in the US how can you blame them (me) for thinking that ? I just call it like I see it, it's not like it would be a big suprise if was the group I mentioned.
