I'm very, very excited for Wrigley, because hopefully it will be the start of several shows for me this year. And I had a great time at PJ20...

...and without wading into the debate over whether a show that hasn't happened will trump a weekend that was 1.5 years ago  , it would be interesting to know how many people who say Wrigley will beat PJ20 were also not at PJ20 vs. people who say PJ20 was better than Wrigley will be also do not have tickets to Wrigley. My guess is a lot on each side. ;)

I don't think so, but I was at PJ20. I never thought Alpine Valley was going to sell out anyway, just because of so much room in the grassy area for people to be in.

Wrigley Field has a pretty big grassy area too. And it sold out :fp:

I'm not even sure of the full capacity of Alpine Valley, so that gets me there. I had an idea of the capacity of Wrigley Field for a concert, it was around 40,000 give or take. There is a difference between Wrigley and Alpine Valley, Alpine has amazing sound.

Within the PJ fan club community, I feel like the hype is comparable to PJ20, but doesn't quite match it. There was so much buildup awaiting the PJ20 details (where the 'festival' was going to be held, what bands would take part, etc.). It seemed like they had entire portions of the radio show dedicated to the speculation, announcement and eventually questions about finalized details. The new ticketing system so far has contributed to a lot of the buzz about Wrigley (although Alpine had its share of ticketing attention). Alpine was more of an event and a celebration.

However, if you take the local hype from the 'general public' and add it to the 'hardcore' hype, I think Wrigley could surpass Alpine in total. There is a lot of buzz about this show. So many people that couldn't care less about taking a trip to Alpine or going to one of the standard pair of shows at the United Center want to be a part of this. Unfortunately, much of it relates to the nostalgic quality from those that just want to hear the early/mid 90s hits and go to a big party, but in doing so they'll get to experience PJ again and see that they truly are better than ever. It is exciting to think about the post show reactions. While Lolla helped present them to the younger generation that became familiar with rock and 'alternative' from guitar hero, this is almost like a reintroduction to those that used to love PJ back in the day and fell off during No Code years and beyond. That's my hometown perspective from everyone that I've talked to (and tried hit me up for tickets) anyway.

As far is the band is concerned, lets face it, it really has alot to do with Ed, for this one especially. The shows where he gets choked up and truly fired up are my favorites. He seems more comfortable than ever with being the center of attention. I think his solo shows and experiences with Bruce, among other things, have helped him with this. As long as he isn't sick (*cough*Missoula*cough*), it should be an epic night. I'd prefer a less hits intensive set, but I think we will get a nice mix.

Sorry for rambling, I think I'm done now.

I hope Im wrong but I dont know if anything could compare to that weekend at Alpine. I spent 2 days on the lawn, have GA Wrigley tix, dont think it will even compare. Im pumped for Wrigley but I think Im already pretty burnt out on the insanity about it on the messageboard. 3 hours cant possibly compare to 2 days with multiple bands, hardcore fans, in what seemed like the middle of nowhere. Just my thoughts anyway.

Wrigley will be another amazing Pearl Jam show.

PJ20 was and always will be the Mecca for Pearl Jam shows. Doesn't matter which setlist is better or which had bigger attendance, PJ20 was the very special weekend festival celebrating their birthday.
A Pearl Jam museum!, Massive walls for fans to write messages on, poster art convention, multiple prints by different artists just for that one show with all the artists there chatting and signing work, special goody bags for tenclubbers, live music from great bands all day long, Stardog Champion!, TEMPLE OF THE DOG REUNION!!! Come on, anyone who moans about totd at PJ20 needs their head checking, that doesn't and will not happen often, maybe not ever again on that scale.

The PJ20 experience was rare, magical, it stands alone.
I doubt they'll ever organise something on that scale again.

I have never had a single regret about skipping Alpine. Conversely, I never even considered skipping Wrigley. I don't know how the two events will compare but for me this is just much more exciting and in my wheelhouse.

I would of NEVER let myself live It down if I missed pj20. Following the band from the bgining and making it such a great party like atmosphere all weekend was awesome. No way as a whole Wrigley could compare. Every time I see or hear something about pj20 makes me so glad I was there.

With that said seems like more "newer" fans are excited about the Wrigley show than about pj20. The look of the prices on the secondary market seem to prove such point.

I think Wrgley will be forever measured up there with, PJ20, Philly, State, Buffalo 03 as one of the best of all time.

I don't think it's even close. PJ20 had more hype.

Alpine is and always will be very special and tough to beat for me personally. That said, I'm loving the hype surrounding Wrigley and I feel it has the makings to be another very special show of epic proportion.....and I will continue to ride that hype wave all the up to the show.

    Interesting.

Personally I thing Wrigley will be in the Top 5 performances in the history of the Band. I believe Wrigley is going to be 3 hours of just pure insanity. This show will compare to all of the Philly shows of 09 as far as setlists, this show will compare to State College in length, this show has a chance to be Pearl Jam at their very BEST!

I think Wrigley is going to replace Cincy for Speedy hatred.

Agreed. I struggle thinking that they are going to do an acoustic set for an hour. A venue like Wrigley needs energy and three slow songs in a row would kill the crowd.

I know PJ20 was great and everything... i would say that was the best 2 show weekend in band history... but...

Philly 2009 was Mt. Everest... 4 shows in 5 days at that venue, with those set lists, is not going to be topped

and Wrigley 2013 will be the biggest 1 time show in recent memory... maybe in band history

and of course the Gorge 05 was truly "epic" as a one time show...

and The Vic 07 was just a very unique and one of a kind show that you had to be in the building to understand...

I wasn't at PJ20... But i continue to read it didn't sell out..

For those who went... compared to this show (I have a ticket for Wrigley), does it seem bigger?

Chicago in July, first time ever at Wrigley, Eddie's home town, no opening band, overwhelming demand...

Are we in for one of the biggest shows ever? I think very possibly... I think the energy at this show will be second to none. Everybody seems to be coming from everywhere for this one.

    Thoughts?

You are mistaken. Many more casual fans will be at Wrigley.

Will still be a great night, but no way it matches almost 6 hours of PJ plus the atmosphere of the weekend.

Agreed. PJ20 was one of a kind and not to be compared. Stands alone, always will.

I am excited for the Wrigley show, but I believe this show will be more remembered for the venue than the show. The band will have only played its 5th show since September 30, 2011. I can't imagine they will be 100% on their game. Also, this is going to be a festival mix of crowd (die hards and people who think it will be cool to be at Wrigley). I am expecting a lot of the hits. Mabye a Costa Rica 2011 setlist but longer and a few more rarer songs.

I would love to hear an acoustic set but I just don't think it is going to happen (at least not an hour long set).

This will be an awesome show but I don't think it will be remembered as one of the greats. The band needs this to be a great show and that means playing a show that 80% of the crowd wants to hear and playing songs to keep the energy in the crowd. The band is past the point of taking risks live.

Who says you can't go? If you are only an hour away I'd show up in Wrigleyville around noon and start looking for tickets in the bars/streets. If you don't score, so what, you will have a great time meeting people and still only have an hour ride home.

As a last resort, you can usually find scalpers trying to unload inventory at the last second outside the venue as well. If you wait long enough, they can usually be had for cheap. Just keep an eye on the stubhub inventory to get an idea of how well the tickets are selling.
  • Options
agreed. Book your flights now then wait till 2 weeks before the show to see the scalpers on stubhub and panic and sell them at face/below.
Now that Wrigley has sold out PJ should announce the fall tour itinerary right?
