The majority of the membership base will have their odds improved in a lottery system for shows in high demand, no argument from me there. Whereas in some other markets the lottery won't even come into play. Where I am left scratching my head in confusion is when someone makes the argument that the "F5 process" essentially is in poor spirit to the rest of the membership base if one purchaser is able to score tickets and the other is not...that somehow the process has been tarnished because one member chooses to reload the purchase screen several times where another might not. The process as a whole is flawed, yes, but to argue that another member was cheated or somehow deprived of tickets because another member was aggressive in reloading the page is tough to comprehend.
I don't think anyone is necessarily cheated, I just don't think some one should be complaining that their chances decrease because of moving to a system that increases the odds for a greater number of members.

I think we all forget that before the recent awesome system where you could get fan club tix to as many shows as you want, it was a lottery. I remember mailing in money orders for 3 shows (MAX) that you could get fan club tickets for. I hoped and prayed that I got my Buffalo, Toronto and Montreal tickets because the envelopes for winners were chosen AT RANDOM! At that time you were only guaranteed a certain "block" of tickets, not even tickets based on seniority.

I'm sure I'm not the first to say this but as members, even with a random lottery, we have it pretty good. We have the chance to get awesome tickets WITHOUT the pain of lining up for shows. The whole point (I think) is to make it EASIER (not guaranteed) for fan club members to get tickets....but maybe that's just because I'm a crazy socialist Canadian.

Agreed, but only so far as your case goes. As this debate has raged I have seen a few members admit they had figured out tricks to beating the system. It wasn't just being aggressive and persistent at reloading the page that was winning some members tickets. I have even seen at least one claim that anyone who didn't learn how to cheat the system is at fault. To me this is what the lottery will eliminate and that is a good thing.

    Understood.

    This is my point exactly.
I sit in front of a computer all day every day for work, so I was pretty lucky with the F5 method. I do think that MY chances would be better with that system, but I totally think that the lottery gives more members a fair shake. Members that have paid their dues, but can't waste an entire morning (or an entire day for that matter, glued to the computer hitting F5)

    Spread the Jam
Yeah, ditto. I would have no problem at all with F5, because I could just sit there at my desk at work and do it for hours on end. But I think it's pretty ridiculous to do that. I think any system that makes it so that is necessary is incredibly flawed. I seriously can't believe that having to do that seems reasonable to anyone! I mean, fuck. I want a nice, quick, streamlined system that allows me to try for tickets quickly and easily, and that's exactly what 10C has provided. So great. And if I don't get drawn for any shows I wanted, I will just take to the boards and find myself a ticket anyway.

Are some of you high right now?

Who said the old system was perfect? Everyone agrees that it should be fixed but why should it be changed entirely?

It's insane to me that some of you are claiming the f5 system was unfair because you have work, kids, chronic diarrhea, no friends etc...

Of course a lottery is fair. Of course it is. No one is denying that. I don't have a problem with the lottery, I simply stated I PREFER the old system because it tipped the scales towards effort, however you define it. I enjoy competition and the idea that if you prepare for something and show up at the right time and place you can increase your odds. I don't know how this philosophy came to be regarded as evil or "unfair" but I'm sad to see it on both this board and in our culture in general.

From what I'm reading, I'm beginning to understand that one's preference comes down to differences in overall philosophy. I'm serious. Somebody joked earlier about he or she being a "crazy Canadian socialist" and I think there is something to that. Maybe because I'm American or more specifically a New Yorker I see things differently. I enjoy the rewards of being clever, showing up on time, not quitting, strategizing etc. These qualities are too often labeled "cheating" or "unfair" in both society and this board.

I totally realize I'm on a soap box and ranting about how tickets are sold is silly but it's just an observation.

If anyone said that F5ing is like cheating then they're nuts. Or even saying the old system was unfair. If people were using the system in a way that it could be used, then nothing was specifically UNfair. It just wasn't fair. This system is. I can relate to enjoying getting something because you put in the effort and strategized ... It's just that when it comes to art and people who have their emotions wrapped up into the art we're talking about here, I don't think that's the most appropriate philosophy or attitude to assume. I think fairness fits this particular situation much better. :willshrug:

hahaha, I don't know if silly is the word I'd use, but if you are discovering newfound cultural differences or life philosophies based on people's differing responses to Pearl Jam's new ticketing system, I would say you definitely need to take a step back!

I would advise you continue to work hard and be clever. Only good things can come of it, even if we are hurdling ever closer to a communist utopia thanks in part to a more equal distribution of 10C tickets!

I don't believe that was the case - it. not completely random. The tickets (granted from the block, not specific seats) were allotted to those whose mailed in requests were received first. The last time this was done was in 2003. You better believe that I sent mine via overnight mail, which anyone could do so my requests would get there as early as possible. It wasn't like all requests were dropped into a hat and then some pulled out. I probably have some of the original instructions lying around somewhere.

Regarding the original post. While I understand the reason for the switch to the new method (tons of frustrated people hitting the net for hours to attempt to get tickets), I, like the original poster never got shut out. I didn't have to practice for days the way he mentioned, but I had my techniques, one of which, my husband recently reminded me, was hard wiring my machine to the cable modem, and banning every other person in the house from being online and sucking bandwith while I was working on getting PJ tickets 8-)

So I understand the switch, but I was okay with the old system. But 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few' right?

Every time I get to this site thru an email link, it shows me logged in but when I go to REPLY, it's say a I have to LOG IN, then I do and it dumps me to the Porch...

    :fp:
That sucks. I had to keep logging in when I went through a notification link for a whole there, but the login issues went away weeks ago for me, even on an android. It's really weird that different probs (or lack thereof) are happening for different people.

Ah, that's the one thing. If I'm logged in on a PC, and then also login and go through email links on my phone, and then go back to the PC, I then can't post or login to the forum on either machine for a couple of hours. Pretty weird.

I agree completely here... The effort and the thrill of the hunt and the excitement of the score...

And it IS effort, not luck. What is the saying, luck is merely the residue of hard work (or something like that, don't feel like looking it up)

By the way, yes, a NY attitude i guess. I too grew up there. LOL

No sense arguing over it as the lottery is here... We'll just have to enter them all!!!
