Philly '09: The Most Over-rated PJ Shows Ever

Evacuation RulesEvacuation Rules Posts: 2,162
edited June 2010 in The Porch
Just got done listening to the Philly run for the second time. I've never heard Pearl Jam sound so under-rehearsed before. They slaughter song after song. I've never heard Ed forget so many lyrics. As boots, these shows don't hold up at all. In fact they are total abortions. Now beofre you say, "you had to be there", I was there for Night 2 and it was hands down the worst PJ show I've ever attended. Even "Given To Fly" sounded like shit. I hope they DON'T release a DVD of these shows, as it would be a total embarrassment.

Does anybody else out there have the balls to admit that these shows are nothing special, save for a handful of decently played rarities?

I thought if they did a DVD it would be a mix between shows, because I did not think there was a chance in hell of them releasing one full show with all of the mistakes due to the band trying to play so many songs. Come Back was a false start....Bugs was slow to get going...etc....

I think the shows were great though. The songs weren't as bad as Satan's Bed at State College.

I was only at Philly 4, but I will definately agree that Ed was more "off" than at any other show I've seen. Don't get me wrong, I had a great time, the setlist rocked, and it was definately one for ages. But, at the same time, it was kinda sloppy, particularly the vocals.

Definitely not, but they're still terrible performances.

Well since they played so many obscure songs and played for over 3:30 hours ill give them a pass. Not every show can be perfect especially when your playing songs for the first time ever. Ill take an obscure sloppy marathon over a 25 song greatest hit set list anyday. These shows were pure heaven period!!!!!

So far I've only listened to nights 3 and 4 and I thought the Halloween show was really good considering how many songs they played and everything that was expected from them, a little sloppy at times but overall a fun show. Night 3 on the other hand is an absolute disaster! The way people talked up this show made me think it was going to be an absolute classic. This show is a prime example that a great setlist doesn't necessarily make for a great show. The crowd is unbelievable and the setlist is one of the best I've ever seen but the bands performance is awful. I would have to agree that this show is terribly over-rated! My expectations for night 1 and 2 are now very low.

I'm not complaining about the setlists. I'm complaining about the performances. They fucked up a lot of "standard" songs too, not just the rarities. The solution to that problem would be to REHEARSE before you take the stage.

I'm not sure how people are going to say night 3 sounded bad.

The setlist was AMAZING. and they really hit just about everything. I mean can you name a song that sounded bad?

It's not about how good a time you had or, "You had to be there"

A shitty performance is a shitty performance. I don't care if they write the song before they go on stage. I don't want sloppy performances.

This is my one major gripe about PJ.

Thanks for raining on the parade before it even got a chance to get to me. Since November 1st all I've heard and read is that Philly was off the chain and all the nights were epic. So I order the boxset. And today I get the email that it shipped, and NOW you drop this shit on me.

I was at the shows and I thought the concerts were awesome!!! I don't remember any fuck ups besides Comeback. I have not listened to the boots of the shows yet...I'm waiting for mine to be shipped from Kufala. After I listen to the boots I'll have a better opinion of the shows.

The crowd did save Ed during Porch on the final night.

I wouldn't worry about it. There is great upside despite a few flops.

Sorry about that. I hope you do enjoy the shows. Just don't expect to hear the correct lyrics or the right chords when your favorite song comes on.

I have listened to all the 09/10 shows a fair bit and Eddies voice is very varied, sometimes he hits a good section some parts he is just so out of breath and stuff. The band also do sound untight (but who can blame them all the songs they play) usually a few dodgey phases from Mike, Jeff or Stone. Matt's perfect :D

People, calm down. Ive heard the boots and they sound fine.
Tremendous shows. Eds never on every song, for an entire show.
The Philly shows were a unreal ride. Anyone ordering them has nothing to worry about.

Some of you people need to step outside away from the computer and headphones. Jesus.
And so you see, I have come to doubt

I think people understand Ed comes and goes a bit, but the band should keep shit rehearsed.

I agree though. The people that are gonna listen to these boots all the time are gonna do it pretty well regardless of the mistakes.

Ya wanna hear something butchered...How bout No War from Chicago 2 last year. I think Ed hits the right chord about 5x the whole song.

the only song that i ever noticed sounding bad to me when i was there was habit. i didn't even know what song it was until i heard the lyrics. that said, it was one of my favorite nights of my life. and they could play the whole tour horribly, i'm just glad they played hold on so wonderfully spot on :D
