Can't be bothered going into details? Considering you have previously posted statements demonstrating that you do not understand what the big bang theory applies to,I have a hard time accepting that most of what I posted was BS, just because you said so.

However, I can agree that it is very humbling when we consider the vastness of the known universe. But also understand that the same principles of scientific practice that guide all other areas of science also guide astronomy.

Astronomy, and the big bang theory (which is a cosmological theory supported by astronomical evidence), are not wild stabs in the dark- they are backed by substantial amounts of scientific evidence, even if you don't want to look at it.

Listen, I know what the big bang theory is, ok? It is possible that you know of another version, but it is still implying the expansion of the universe and how this expansion came to be. That was what I talked about. I also know astronomists personally and know the works of the most respected astronomists, and they are all stating how little we know about the universe. They are so looking forward to the future to expand their knowledge. Right know, for example, the existance of dark matter is being discussed again. They got new information that could led to another paradigm shift concerning dark matter. (I suppose you understand the implienses and the impact this shift would have) They are not sure. Also, a few years ago, they found the ninth plante IN OUR OWN SOLAR SYSTEM. This is how much we know about the universe. We know almost nothing. Scientists are exited about what we know, and so am I, and I understant the big bang theory for what its worth, but dont be so sure that it wont be altered in the future, when their is more information and evidence. I also suppose you know how quantum mechanics turned the whole world of physics around, how Einstein turned the world for physics, and OUR understanding of space-time-speed-energy. So how can you say big bang is pretty much set in stone? Really, I think you read a lot on this topic, but I can tell you are not a scientist yourself, cuz you are not open to paradigm shifts, and these occur, especially in the field of physics, very often.

You're right, I have no idea how you are. All I have to go on is stuff like what I just quoted. Yet I don't start with no respect and then work up. I start respecting everyone until they give me reason not to. You know, cause they're human fucking beigns. And I never attributed your hyper-pessimistic attitude towards atheism, but I'm sure others will. I was seriously concerned with the "kill myself" line. Again, just out of basic respect for other people. It seems like you're the type of person I would never get along with, but I still felt like shit when I read that line, even though you've done nothing to "earn" my worry, or my respect. You're a human being. I don't care if people respect human beings because they think God wants them to, or because they just have an innate sense that they should. I do think we should respect each other anyway.

PS Edit was to change "Your" to "You're". Welcome back EvilRabit. ;)

i said some shit last night that whilst true probably shouldnt have been said. i wasnt in a very good place and that tends to manifest itself as hostility.
i actually meant that it is serial killers who do not deserve my respect, not people. despite some weird idiosyncracies i do approach people with respect.

I am convinced that no one really thinks entirely for themselves. We are creatures of habit and belief and vanity who like to believe that we think for ourselves. This makes us or our group right and everyone else wrong. And this is okay until we go Old Testament or Islamist or Hitler on others who don't believe like us.

I disagree with many things Vedder says, but he should say whatever the hell he pleases. It gives us stuff to talk about and bond over one way or the other. I thank Vedder for being an opinionated iconoclast. Life would be so boring without him and the many people in our lives just like him.

I don't know. I mean, I buy into the whole god concept, but, I don't buy into the God that religion is trying to sell me. Religion tends to paint God as a sellfish, narcissitic and petty asshole... which I believe He is not. I believe He is not going to Judge me and condemn me for not following this doctrine or that... rather, He loves me... just because. Even though I'm this fucked up, confused human being who questions what others tell me.
As for varying beliefs and opinions... I agree. We need to listen... but, not necessarily follow. You want to find God... choose your own path. If that path leads through your church... your religion... fine. Follow by your choosing, not the directives of others. If you don't believe in God... that's fine too. I know that does not make you evil... and you are not less of a human. You are still travelling on thie road we call 'life' and i'll wish you all well and I hope you all find whatever it is you are looking for.
All I ask is that I'm given the same courtesy. Let me walk... even if it is alone. It's by my own choosing.

And it's not a knock on Christianity or Catholics. The fledgeling religion needed recruits. What better way than to convert the ones who didn't believe in the deity system? It makes perfect sense.
Couple Christianity with the two biggest events of the year... the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. Remember, these Pagens were pretty basic people... Winters killed them. They'd run out of food or freeze to death. That's why Spring is so important... rebirth, hopes for fertile grounds for their crops... fertile livestock for food... fertility, fertility, fertility. Orbs hung on the tree... fertility. Springtime... bunnies... eggs... fertility. all of those rituals that Western culture associates with Christmas and Easter center around surviving the Winter and FERTILITY.
I just find it a bit odd that Christians fail to acknowledge this... it's no big deal. We all know there is never a mention of trees and garland and fertility bulbs and bunnies and painted eggs in the Bible. Just accept it that in order to grow in numbers... early Chrisitanity needed converts. Those converts were the Pagans... who clung to their ancient riutuals. No big deal.
I guess it's because Christians tend to be uptight about sex... the thought of fertility being attached to their Saviour might be the reason. But us... Pagans... we don't care. We happen to like candy canes and chocolate bunnies and Peeps... and the time off work.

Yes of course. You know I had a bad feeling typing it, but then I thought f*ck it. I remember how I started out and it was a T-Shirt stating "Try God". It can be as easy as that. It helped me and billions of people a lot. And in the end, when there is no God, my life still got improved by faith and hope. And dont think people only believe out of fear. For me, most of the times it is because of gratitude. Plus you never are alone plus you can make sense of the world plus plus plus. Dont think believers dont know doubt. of course we do. The pope has a great chapter on doubt in his introduction to Christianity. He says everybody has doubts. But it is better to doubt the Christian view as a Christian, than to doubt the Atheist view as an atheist. I think its a great thought. If nowone would doubt his believes, noone would care and this thread would not have expanded like it did. It bothers all of us.

Maybe you didn't ask the question? I think for someone to say: 'There is no God' he must know the whole universe. Or how can you be sure and never doubting?

yeah, thats what I meant, of course. non believers believe also. They believe there is no God. That is the decision they make. Agnostics are different. but anyway, I'm off now, keep it cool... and oh yeah thread integrity.. I am pretty sure Eddy Vedder believes in some kind of absolute. I think he sings about it on several songs, for example "Severed Hand" and on MSG DVD he said something during Wishlist, if I am not mistaken. So, sheeps.... CONVERT NOW

Wow... imagine if that T-shirt said, "Moustache Rides... 5 Cents".
And do not feel that people who do not believe in God... lack hope and faith. They are not lost and empty and alone. Positive human traits are not exclusve to religious people... or people who say they are religious.
    ...
Also... you need to explain to me WHY or HOW "Doubting a Christian view as a Christian, is better than to doubt the Atheist view as an atheist". Because, i don't get it. How is doubting your God any better than doubting the non-existance of Him?
