is the good ole spectrum considered in the city or on the out skirts of the city?
would it be better to stay at the hotels at the airport or the ones right in the heart of the city?
coming in friday would like to do a little walking around and some chowing down and fairly close to the venue

You post something knocking how ghetto philly is...then you turn around and ask where the spectrum is? obviously you don't know philly well, so don't knock what you don't know.

Philly is a great city with lots to offer...like any major US city there are good and bad parts.

that being said, the spectrum is in south philly. there isn't much to do if you stay in that area. Stay in Center City and take public transportation to the stadium area.

is public transportation ( i read somewhere the orange line I think) easy to find....are there hotels/a place to get a cheesesteak near it?
  • kosteva2kosteva2 Posts: 325
As a native Philadelphian, I'd recommend to stay in Center City and take the Broad Street subway line to the shows. Holiday Inn by the stadiums is a dump. The Center City hotels are a little pricier. There's a Doubletree (I think) right downtown around Broad/Walnut that is more reasonable. Plus, if you get a hotel on Broad St., you'll get a front row seat if the Phillies have another World Series Championship parade which might happen on one of those dates.

If I was going to try priceline to get a hotel in the Center City area which box would I check to get
    the right area? Downtown Philadelphia?

The choices are: Cherry Hill-Mount Laurel, City Line, Downtown Philadelphia,
Gloucester-Runnemede-Deptford, Philadelphia Airport, Trevose-Bensalem, and University Area.

thanks for all the tips folks. im prety sure imma use'em and stay in the city centre (tourist purposes).

question. how much would a cab be to the venue from downtown? would that be a dumb move? im cool with the subway in general, but cabbing is easy and brain dead and safe, esp if im solo. though hopefully ill meet up with some peeps and do the subway.

    thoughts?

Any tips on a decent hotel that also happens to be really cheap :)
  • mookieblalockmookieblalock Posts: 3,243
I know Hartford last year, someone started a thread with the best prices/bids for priceline.com that would be accepted. I remember getting a room at the Hilton (I believe) for a really great price because of this. The best part was that because of the thread there were a lot of other PJ fans in the hotel.

Maybe someone can start a similar thread for Philly? (I would if I knew where to begin!)

Just do the subway, but a cab will probably run you about $8-15 - somewhere around there. Subway's only $2 one way. Or if you split with other people and get tokens it's cheaper.
  • kosteva2kosteva2 Posts: 325
Definitely recommend subway over cab. Much cheaper, and probably a touch faster from center city. Going to/from show will have enough other people on subway that you probably won't have any safety issues.
Use Center City for hotwire/priceline hotels. I think there's a site called "bidbetter" or "betterbidding" (try googling it) that will tell you the likely hotels you'd get on these sites based on prices and features.

$30 per night for parking :o Is that generally what I should expect to pay in that area?

The Radisson on 17th is a nice hotel in a great location. You're right in Rittenhouse Square, a lot of shops, restaurants and bars. There is an old guy that bar tends at Tavern 17 that is hysterical. If you don't mind spending a few bucks for dinner, Alma de Cuba, Tequila's or Devon all come highly recommended and are within a very short walking distance. :)

    2 questions......
What time do the bars close in Philly?
Is there a cheaper option to park downtown -- my hotel wants to charge me $42 to park.

Leads one to believe that it could have possibly been had cheaper. I anticipate that once we get final word on a potential 3rd show and everyone starts booking rooms, we'll see some great Priceline deals and a hotel or two filled with 10C members just like the Hyatt in Chicago.

I'm surprised more people aren't going with the Holiday Inn at the venue. $120, free parking, no cab fair, no worries..

    and crack you up

Bars close at 2am with a few exceptions.

$42 for overnight parking is a bit steep. You can probably find a non-hotel lot in the $20-$30 range for 24 hours.

No subway from airport, but there are SEPTA trains that run every half hour. Might cost around $8-$10 each way to Center City. MAybe takes about 25 minutes and drops you off at a couple train stations in town. Suburban Station is in Center City and short walk to Broad St subway line to go to venue.

Rittenhouse Square is really nice and Alma De Cuba is expensive but worth every penny. There's some really great bars you should check out in Old City too...(Lucys, Drinkers, The Kyhber... just some of my faves)

I just booked the Radisson for $70 per night on Priceline. Thanks!

May have been able to get it for less, but saving just a few dollars wasn't worth the risk to me of getting something different.

That's not how Priceline works. Read up on it in the future before using that type of justification to bid more.
