I obviously was a fan at one time to register here, but in the spirit of the band itself (or what they would like you to believe), I am speaking out for what I believe. And I feel they have become total sellouts. I was in denial for awhile like most people on here. I Just stopped drinking the kool-aid. Forums are for idea sharing, dialogue, and debate. The OP posed a question and I answered it.

I'm just guessing, but I'm assuming he paid up before PJ decided to partner up with Target.

he did pay AFTER Pearl Jam signed the exclusive deal with Verizon Wireless, but BEFORE they started charging $83.50 a ticket to fan club memebers.

Probably so, I guess. It's just strange to me that someone would continue to come to a fan club community just to call the band sellouts. Just seems like a waste of time and energy, and a silly attempt to ruffle some feathers.
Because this is a pay to post deal I'm always surprised to see people say harsh things about the band.

But we are all entitled to our own opinions.
A LOT of us older loyal fans were let down with that Target deal. (please, no one jump on me about that, I'm simply stating my opinion here.) We older fans were also with the band when they approached Senate about Ticketbastard. We know that the guys, in their hearts, are not about the high ticket prices. So of course we're going to question an $83 ticket price. We all have opinions and the ones feeling let down by the band's integrity have every right to call them on this. This is not a "you don't like what they do, then leave" club. In the end, it's all about the music.

fair point, but there seems to be little thought being put into why the tickets are $83, when all things considered its quite reasonable.
Crikey the band has to make money, and what with the internet ruining record sales, this is the only way now. Vedder said that recently, as much as he hated high ticket prices, in a sense fans only have themselves to blame for stealing $10 records
I would pay anything to see this band NEARBY my area. But yes the prices are getting steep with the whole situation, thats if you are doing several shows.

Truthfully, I don't buy that. For YEARS now, record sales have been significant not because artists made millions (because frankly, most of the time, they don't), but because they drum up concert ticket sales. For me, as one of four kids in my immediate family, I understand the importance of family - as do the members of Pearl Jam, I believe. I also believe that these ticket prices are set where they are so the band members can provide for their families in the ways they would like to.

Thank you Jeanwah, If I ruffled any feathers It wasn't my intention. (I wouldn't want to be censored, I mean "banned" again just for being a voice of dissent) In fact i could live with the fact that these guys have been compromising to the industry for the last few years, I guess they have had a better track record than most, but I will no longer support a band that censors it's own fans for questioning it. (that is absolutely what this forum did to me and a few others) So now I am going to get the rest of my $20 worth whether you agree or not. After all where am I supposed to have a debate about this? On a green day forum? On some relevant music blog somewhere that doesn't give a shit about pearl Jam? you tell me? Is this the Pearl Jam drone forum? am I supposed to just accept everything the band does because of ideas they have expressed in the past? I supported this band from the first time I heard the song Alive and I have chosen just recently to give up. When I refer to them as sellouts i am referring to the continuing compromise of what I perceived to be their strong principles. This was a big reason I was a fan as well as the music. they always seemed to stick up for the little guy and I just don't see that in them anymore. Sorry if you disagree, that's your right, and I certainly wouldn't tell you to go away or shut up for expressing your opinion.

Understandable. Curious, how old is considered older fans for Pearl Jam? It`s true that I didn't become obsessively hooked to this band until later in their success, which explains how I've never felt personally connected to their business decisions. I suppose that, although I love the music these boys make, I consider them entertainers an businessmen first and foremost.

Fair point, but the sellout argument is a tired one, and there are tens of threads discussing it....
blatant negativity for the sake of it isnt hardly worthly of a discussion. Go back and reread your first post. Its backed up by loads of good reason I see
I get your drift. I've been around since they were openers and still love them live, but aspects of this recent path have me confused. Maybe it's because this is the first record THEY are personally releasing I believe and that has sent them down a different path. I do agree that you have as much a right to express your disolution with the band as any person on here does to express their delight in them playing 4 nights in LA??? It's all too random for me to grasp, so I'm going to let it go. I agree with Jeanwah that older members are probably more accepting of alternate points of view - shit we stuck with Ed through the " give it to him, he hates everything" days, LOL! Maybe they will open up about what they feel their direction is headed in promoting the record and then again maybe they won't. I hate to think they have changed that much over the years to completely desert the foundation they promoted themselves under in the first place. I'm also let down they let stations and media know in advance about shows that weren't necessarily a secret or surprise but dates unknown before they told the people who have paid $5 to $20 a year to know first. Then put out a Wayne Newton-like ( cheers to whomever came up with that) tour schedule to promote new music, just makes me go, huh??

My first post was a short direct answer to the OP's question. Didn't require much thought. I even got the answer and the reason for my answer in the same sentence. it seems more people were responding to my post than the actual question posed, that is why I felt the need to elaborate. And to all the people asking why I would pay to post on this forum, thank's for your concerns. it seems at least some of the fans still understand something about value.
"I had a false belief, I thought I came here to stay" -e.v.
since people now freely trade and copy music
I wont give any band a hard time for trying to make money in other ways that they may not have had to do in the past. (i.e. target) and I wont complain if the tickets prices are $20 more.
but speedy's right, if you can afford it go, if you cant dont.
its just a rock concert after all and its supposed to be a fun experience
Bands have never made any real money on the album itself. It was promotion and touring that always makes the bucks. Most record companies give them about a penny or two per album sold - so IMO the two really aren't equal. If they want to keep prices down, do more shows in cheaper markets I believe is the point everyone has been trying to get across. It's not just the price of the ticket to the people who want to see them from out of town and yes most of us don't have it, which is better for you anyway since maybe now you'll get a ticket, depending on how many they reserve for fan club - in recent tours it's been leaner as well.

It's just not pearl jam, Concert tickets have insanely risen in prices of the last 15 years. Well past inflation levels. As some point promotors figured out that scalpers we reselling relatively cheap tickets for insane prices, and that prices they were charging were low.
So over the years promotors keep raising prices, and they met little or no resistance, people keep paying.
For a tenured band like pearl jam, 75-80 a ticket isn't that bad or off the mark when comparing them to other bands that have played as long (or longer) than they have.
I read an article once on the increase on ticket prices, and found some artists have difficulty keeping them low even if they want to. As all venues have agreements, and you have to use these venues to do your show, and they want a certain cut, as do the promotors, so bands get forced into charing higher prices.
The whole concert/music industry is crooked from the riaa to ticketmaster to clearwire to live nation. It makes it feel like bands really have no control.
Then again pearl jam doesn't tour all that much, maybe they just need the money

This band has been with a major label since the beginning and the SONY Corporation
Hooked up with Sprint also didn't they for a Webcast of Lolla ?
By your logic you shouldn't have bought TEN it was with a Major Label
Now they go with Target and its the end of the world..the band said you can still get the record at local record stores
