My vote would still be for Jack White, but he doesn't seem to be playing gigs this year.
One-offs he might. He played that concert in Detroit a few weeks ago and he’s also rumored (likely just wishful thinking, but) as a possible Neil replacement for Bourbon & Beyond.
Oooh, I like those possibilities! I didn't know about Detroit. Good to know he's up for maybe a few shows.
Too soon, he just did Ohana 2 yrs ago. But I've heard worse ideas.
Yes, but he "co-headlined" with Ed. He played on the same night (Sat), but before Ed. Their sets did not intermix at all.
I'm not sure how that's a co-headliner, except his name was just as big on the flyer and the title of co-headliner, itself, gave him props. They may have had equal time, I don't remember now, I'd have to look it up.

He could now have his own headliner spot (and save the day).

Why does that matter? He played before Ed that show too so wasn't a true headliner.  Glen Hansard was on the bill last year and numerous times over the years.  I think Jack White would be my number one pick without Neil.  Heck, hopefully Neil still makes it out for a surprise appearance with PJ. Would be epic to see PJ, Neil and Jack White laying it down. I can dream, but it seems possible.

Ha, indeed! He’s got plenty of country inspired songs and could fit the transition from Turnpike Troubadours into some face melting rock guitar work during his set. 🙏🙏

Santana puts on an amazing show and I'd imagine he would cater to NY crowd.  He would have to cancel his 9/28 Vegas show, but it looks like a residancy so prob should be ok.

Counting Crows maybe, but they are in Maryland on 9/27.  If they could swing it, would be decent.
I’ve never read as many negative reviews of a live act then I have with Counting Crows.

Well it won't be Blink 182.  They're headlining another festival, but they make perfect sense for next year.

    -SoCal legends
-An actual legit rock/punk headline act
-Tom Delonge is friendly with Ed
-Blink collaborated with Jeff for MPS recently
-Ames Bros makes posters for them.

    Sign them up, Ed!

Thanks for the heads up on Counting Crows.  I've never seen them before, and definitely won't be seeing them in the future.

Santana however I do vouch for.  If you ever have the chance to see him, I highly recommend it.  He's great live.

I saw them once 20+ years ago. Not certain they rehearsed or if the lead singer knew the band before the show started. It was awful.

Have seen them three times spread out over 20 years and been disappointed in the exact same way each time. Adam is just not good live. Some of the studio recordings are great, and August And Everything After might be a top 10-15 album for me, but the live show is rough

Sting could be a nice headliner fill-in.  He is on tour, in St Louis on 9/27.  Also, I think No Doubt would be great.
My top choice is still NIN, and I would purchase the Sat ticket if they perform.

I saw them for the first time a couple weeks ago opening for Santana. It wasn’t awful-i’ve see. MUCH worse opening acts over the years, but it’s also likely the only time i’ll see them live.
That said they do have a group of die hard fans. There were several people up toward the front standing their entire set and singing along to every word. So what they do appeals to some people, but wasn’t for me. And certainly don’t think they would be able to pulloff headlining a large festival.
I am glad i saw them once, but also glad it was a shorter opening set followed by a great Santana show.

Technically this isn't a large festival. But I don't see The Wallflowers as a headlining act. Would people who paid to see Neil want to see Blink or a No Doubt?

Agreed that Blink and No Doubt likely won't appeal to Neil fans.  Trying to find the cross-section between headliner, and what Neil fans would like, seems like a difficult challenge.  I think one or the other might be the way.  Either a headliner, or an artist that Neil fans would like, but likely not both.  Unless they can get Sting or Santana, as I think those artists can headline and do appeal to Neil fans (maybe?).

I saw Counting Crows in the 90s and from what I remember, the singer sang most of their songs as differently from the records as he could (timing/tuning etc) so it made it very hard to get into and enjoy, like a concert full of songs you didn’t know.

Has anyone said Eddie Vedder?   Tough to pull off three nights in a row.  But more $$$ in the bank.

Saw them a couple of years ago for the first time at the Orange County (CA) fair.  They were fantastic.

Ed can't do 3 nights in a row anymore. 2021 was the nail in that coffin.
