I think the point is not "do you want them to perform this 30-year-old song?," but "do you want them writing a song with that theme today"? Eddie Vedder writing "Leash" in 1992-93 was expressing a genuine feeling he was experiencing at that time. Eddie Vedder today is probably not feeling that emotion in the same way, so to write a song with that theme would not ring true.

Well, from the snippet I heard of the song "Something Special," I have a newfound definition for those two words.  Not my cup of tea.

Thats what I thought of the snippet, too. I was worried about it.

Then I heard it with my daughters, once at the record store party and then again last night with the movie experience. The second time with the lyrics and visualizers, my younger one crawled up into my lap and snuggled with me while the older one was holding my hand and I had a moment. 

They are both aware of Ed's daughters, hearing them on various songs, and also are getting into vinyl with Taylor Swift coming out soon...its been a cool couple of weeks with them. So this song hit home pretty hard. And its musically accessible to them, easy to hear, they dig it.

Yes, yes I do.  I look forward to a 75 year old Eddie screaming the lyrics to Lukin III, hopefully an even faster version of the original song.

And AC/DC has rocked from day one and will rock until they're all done, and that is why their catalog is more popular than Pearl Jam's...at least to the majority of true 'rock' fans.  

I have yet to dislike a PJ album (not counting first listens of the 'weird' Vitalogy and No Code), and I hope this album keeps that streak going...but I will admit I'm a bit worried after single #3 (not a huge fan of single #2 either).

Ha!  Yeah, to each their own.  They're definitely not going to please the entire fanbase at this point in their career.  By the way, I have nothing against AC/DC.  They do what they do very well.  Hell, I just cranked up High Voltage and Back in Black recently.  But with PJ, I've always enjoyed the variety... every album has very different styles crammed into those dozen or so songs. 

BF25394 nailed it.  They're going to pull out a random setlist every night with a lot of old stuff, but they've evolved out of the "Lukin"/"Leash"/"Blood"-type tracks for their albums.  Seems the choice is to either embrace how they've evolved into a band of 60 year old men and enjoy the ride, or accept that what they're doing is no longer your cup of tea.  For a lot of people on here, it's somewhere in the middle... half of it hits, half of it doesn't.  Again... to each their own, but I think it would feel extremely inauthentic for these men to force a Ten or Vs.-type vibe on you at this stage of their lives/career.

I think of Soundgarden's King Animal.  It was still Soundgarden, but it was a different thing.  They had gotten older, evolved.  The old stuff is there if you want to go listen to it.  Maybe I'm surprised so many of us old fans still have to get the energy/rage out! 

Seven O' Clock is great

Very Petty / Eddie Solo vibes.  Pretty good song, interested to see how it will translate live and where it falls in the setlists.

Easy.  You're coming across as a guy that has listened to "Leash" for 30 years straight.

Just listened for the first time. I hope I like it more within the context of the album. I’m just not into adult contemporary PJ.

I don't think I'm giving too much away by saying this track (clearly Petty vibes... or adult contemporary as you say) is unique in that I don't think it sounds like anything else on the album.  For whatever reason, it was the one kind of stuck in my head after the two plays at the theater last night. 

"Something Special" is getting a lot of critics too, and that is a standalone as well, meaning a different vibe than anything else on the album.  So I think, generally speaking, if you wanted to categorize you have those 2 that are kind of their own thing, 4 rockers, 4 mid-tempos and the closer (which in PJ's case is often a great, different style tune... I really liked "Setting Sun" and think it's another great closer for PJ).

Thanks for the breakdown!  I’ve only given Wreckage one listen (and I didn’t hate it). I didn’t really get a Petty vibe. I got more of a Sirens/7:00 vibe with some Springsteen. Unfortunately, for me I don’t really like any of those 3 things. That’s where my “adult contemporary” comment came from.
