I love it. Can't get it out of my head. I think I had something in my eye while this was playing in the theatre lol

Was thrown off initially by this track, and after repeated listens, I still can't get on board with the initial verses and chorus. It's the pop-like melodies I think.
However, I really love the outro to this song. From 3:00 mark and onward, it's wonderful. The outro is the reason why I won't skip this track, and I will endure the initial verses lol. And I imagine that I'll like this track more once heard in succession with the other tracks, as it sounds like this album is great as a whole.
The key to this song is that it’s lyrically tied to Setting Sun.
And was there a lyric connection between Scared of Fear and Setting Sun? I’ve only had the two listens but when I saw the lyrics in the theatre I vaguely remember a link there too? Sorry I digress.

Yes, SoF drops a setting sun line in the lyrics. Noticed that at the movie theatre too.
yeah, I think Setting Sun is like the reprise of multiple songs.
All of the songs seem connected. If I were to venture a guess, it would be about someone who is dealing with a loved one who has been having a hard time mentally over the last several years, and they are coping.
Again, not autobiographical and not about anyone in particular. Just sort of a story. The "Dark Matter" to me represents both the dark things happening in the world, real or not, and also the dark places people and their relationships can go.
I'm surprised by how polarizing this song is. It's my wife's favorite at the moment, I think it's middle of the pack on DM, which is not too shabby in my opinion. So many people outright hate it, I don't get it, not that I have to, but I don't.
Listening now. It thought it was cool at first, but it didn't move me for a number of listens as much as some of the others. Now I think it's a really beautiful song. Still haven't heard a quality version of the album, but as much as I think this is a great song, I don't think it's in the top 50% of this album, and that's a GREAT thing
Listened a second time last night. It was better than the first. Definitely heard the Petty vibes this time. I think this one might grow on me and get better and better
Point is I think Wreckage is better than anything off LB or Gigaton.
To say Wreckage is better than Quick Escape is criminal in my mind/ears...but to each his own. That's what makes music great. What is one person's trash is another person's treasure and vice versa.

Yeah, the opinions about it are all over the place. I personally love it, along with Something Special. I hope I get to hear both at my shows.
I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.
I really really like it! I has my wife listen to it with headphones and when I came back to ask her opinion she was listening to it a 2nd time, she’s not a music buff at all but she says in her wife voice I can’t believe they can write songs this beautiful! I agreed

Haha...I am always asking my wife for her opinion on Pearl Jam songs as she's not a huge fan. She's like my own personal one person focus group.

She's a huge Something Special fan. lol
I told my wife (who was indifferent on Dark Matter and Running) that Something Special is one she'd like, so I played her the clip in the observer. She did a country dance elbowy jig thing and said "Really?" LOL
I was in an all day meeting at work and had to wait all day to hear it. I like it, I think I still like DM better, but it's a good solid song and makes me excited for the rest.

Definitely getting the Petty vibes. It was the first thing I thought when hearing it. Like someone said above, the outro is really when the song gets excellent.
you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane
The first two singles from the album, and the comments from the band about it being heavier than you'd expect, had me pretty intrigued. Having listened to all of the audio clips, I'm not sure what they were talking about. It's almost exactly what I'd expect if I were expecting the worst.
I'm glad people are enjoying this track, but this doesn't sound like the Pearl Jam I love. It sounds like Pearl Jam for people who love Sirens. Unfortunately I hated that song and the album it came from. I just think it's an extreme departure from the band they were and not in a good way. The slower tempo songs and ballads used to have an edge to them. This just sounds soft.
Still heard some interesting stuff in the other clips, and can't wait to listen to the album in its entirety, but I'm really taming my expectations at this point. From what I've heard, wreckage, won't tell and something special sound like Pearl Jam exercising their worst indulgences to me....but maybe, hopefully, I'll be pleasantly suprised when I give the album a proper listen.
Don't hold your breath! Well said, couldn't agree with you more!

I'm going to listen to Leash now to cleanse my ears and restore balance.
Do you really want a guy pushing 60 to yell at you to get out of his fucking face? Why rehash what's been done? AC/DC is there for you if you want the same formula over and over.
Yes, yes I do. I look forward to a 75 year old Eddie screaming the lyrics to Lukin III, hopefully an even faster version of the original song.
And AC/DC has rocked from day one and will rock until they're all done, and that is why their catalog is more popular than Pearl Jam's...at least to the majority of true 'rock' fans.
I have yet to dislike a PJ album (not counting first listens of the 'weird' Vitalogy and No Code), and I hope this album keeps that streak going...but I will admit I'm a bit worried after single #3 (not a huge fan of single #2 either).
Well said

I can’t stop hearing Fast Car in it. Must be similar chords. Especially in the beginning.
I noticed that too!!! Thought I was crazy for thinking it lol
It is close but different. Fast car's verse is Cmaj7-G-Em-D (played with a capo on 2nd fret in Chapman's version and 1st fret in Luke Comb's version) and Wreckage is G-Bm-G-Bm-G-Bm-Em-D.

The instrumental bridge reminds me of December by Collective Soul. They’re both descending patterns that go from G to F on the low e string.

See this is the kind of response I just dont understand. It's clear you dont like it. Said multiple times. Why try to ruin someone else's enjoyment of it?
Like its one thing to say, "Hey I dont like it, but whatever". But you are literally responding to someone's positive post about it. Not mad, just dont understand the desire to continue to beat a dead horse.

And also: it has been out for a day. Maybe give it a week before rushing to the internet to declare "Worst. Song. Ever."

Sure that too. But I mean, I have not liked songs right off the bat in the past, too. I never was on board with Buckle Up. I liked some of the lyrics, but musically, it's not something I would really listen to. But some people enjoyed it, I just never would respond with, "nope it sucks!".
Whatever, live and let live I would say. If someone is enjoying the crap out of something, let them. Life is too short to be pissing in anyone's cornflakes.

I think we're basically saying the same thing. And I'm with you on the "Buckle Up" lyrics: I'm naming my next album Bedsores and Sponge Baths.
