That's such a great movie. Temuera Morrison and Rena Owen are fantastic in it. @brianlux There is a sequel to it, 'What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted?', but you may not want to dive straight into another one so soon!

I really learned a lot from "Once Were Warriors". I love those scene where the head of the special school teaches the kids traditional ways. But I'd always had this idealistic picture of NZ. No doubt the landscape is beautiful in much of your country- that much I'm certain is true. But I didn't know about the plight of the Maori (and probably other indigenous and minority peoples) and how serious it is. I didn't know much about the poor in the cities there (but of course that exists in almost large city).
That was made in '94. Did it have an impact? Has the situation improved?
