I just find it odd that the government promotes and encourages the dumbest form of gambling known to man as easy as a trip to get a Big Gulp at the Kwik-E-Mart, while if I want to bet the over in the Ohio State game I need to set up a dummy offshore account and pray the feds don't freeze it.

In many states,  it's a straight up income redistribution from poor to the middle class.  For example in Georgia,  lottery proceeds allow middle and lower class students go to college almost free.  Yet,  most lottery purchasers are poor and students are middle and upper class... income redistribution up.

The state university I went to has had in-state tuition go from $5K to over $20K in the last 20 years.  That's almost free!  Long live the lotto

There is no reason to keep costs in check when the taxpayers back the loans.

“You live in a society and benefit from roads, schools, the fire department, the recreation centre with swimming pools and gyms and classes, the paramedics, the police department, and even the dog catcher. Maybe even the military, which some people are pretty fond of.  When you get older you’ll get an old age pension. And guess what? Someone has to pay for all of that, and because you’re an adult, you understand that means you pay your share.”

    See how it works?

So retired military doesn't get a pension? Try again.

So if the tax doesn't benefit you directly,  you shouldn't have to pay? As an example,  only retired military should pay for their retirement?  Only people that have called the police should pay for the police?

I'll gladly pay property taxes to fund schools if it keeps those pesky kids in school and off my lawn!

I fail to see why their retirements need to be funded by the taxpayers, they did those jobs and received pay and benefits for doing them.

How do you expect the police's or military's salary (not retirement) to be paid without taxes?

I think benefits for government employees should be consistent with the average benefits with private companies.  Government needs to compete for talent like everyone else.  Pensions are going away for private companies because in the end they'll crush your business if times ever get bad and are replaced with matching 401k/profit sharing contributions.  I'm all for freezing the pension plans and converting to defined contribution plans for government workers.

No, Often Reading brought up many ways where we all benefit from taxes: schools,  roads,  defense,  fire,  etc.  You chose to focus on military benefits because you didn't serve.  So what about the rest?  I mean obviously you're living in a cabin in Montana,  home schooling your kids and driving your ATV to pick up your food source out in your fields.  But what about the rest of the 299.999 million of us?

Because the individualistic society was so effective in ancient times through the middle ages.  Read a book. Learn from the past.
