I've always enjoyed those "Who were the first punks" threads even though no one really knows for sure. A good argument could be made for this being the first punk:tempo_n_groove said:

2009 Original pressing, even though it was recorded as one of the first ever punk albums in 1976..
What are the first punk albums?
MC5, Stooges, Ramones, Velvet Underground, NY Dolls, Crass?

Did you ever get a chance to see them, Brian?0

Is that Jim Morrison? If so, why?brianlux said:

I actually think The Kinks and the Kingsmen could be in the conversation.0

I don't think of Jim Morrison as a punk in any way, shape, or form. He was a Psychedelic Poet Rocker.
Someone already mentioned The Kinks, and I think they were probably the first really major punk band (I've read that some call them proto-punk). Perhaps the Velvet Underground could be shoehorned into the category. They formed in the mid-60s.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0

Exactly, who were the first punk bands? Probably the ones you've mentioned, definitely the Stooges were one of the first. So the story goes with the above Death album, their record company at the time wouldn't release it unless the band changed their name, apparently it was too controversial at the time, the band refused so the album never got a proper vinyl release until 2009..tempo_n_groove said:
