My initial comment to your question was going to be a whispered "Because he's Harper (with nice hair).", lol.PJfanwillneverleave1 said:^^^
I guess Harper was right with his choices.
However, being on day 3 of no cigs I'm not quite ready to handle the reaction that comment would have drawn, so I went factual and now post my first thought as a "joke" (not a particularly good one, I know, lol)."The world is full of idiots and I am but one of them."

Trust me, I get what you're saying, but know that at this specific moment I can't count on myself to react reasonably/rationally, lol. I just have to use the senate that's in my head (second thought and all) a bit more at the moment, I guess, lol.PJfanwillneverleave1 said:

Interesting, because normally I would completely agree with him, lol. This is literally the first time in my life when I thought the Senate was doing something worthwhile (that I was aware of, that is... they may have done useful things that I had no clue about)!DarthMaeglin said:
The only reason I've seen presented so far is that he's opposed in principle to the unelected nature of the senate, and thinks they should simply rubber stamp the work of the elected officials.PJfanwillneverleave1 said:Why is there no/so little info as to why Trudeau is opposed?
This is (thankfully) proving the senate's worth as the chamber of sober second thought.

That's hilarious, since Harper opposed doctor assisted suicide.PJfanwillneverleave1 said:^^^

Hahaha. I actually also had to really restrain myself from going on a rant in response to this post. I think we both deserve a pat on the back!DarthMaeglin said:

I read it as a simple "stick to your beliefs," without a bias either way. I'm only dancing around things (read: trying to be more careful how I post) because I know I'm not 100% thinking clearly at the moment and don't want to cause needless or excessive offence (I'll point to my post last night in the thread about the gator attack as an example).PJ_Soul said:

At the moment, my brain feels like: yushabdhxzndjroeoskdbtbdjakarjntnsnentbsbsbdnrrgrdn (works and feels better on a real keyboard, not my current touch screen, lol). But I haven't smoked since Monday, so I'm happy, sort of, lol. I'll shut up now, both to get the thread back on topic, as well as tend to dinner, lol.
Edited for poor punctuation, lol.Post edited by DarthMaeglin on"The world is full of idiots and I am but one of them."

I originally thought the original legislation was fine a few weeks back ... Now I'm completely fine with anyone asking for dr assisted death, it's their life and if for whatever reason if someone decides they don't want to go on living who are we to say they have to...it's their choice.I have certain rules I live by ... I'm not aware of any "doctors lobby" opposing the assisted dying issue. Sure, there are individual physicians opposed, like individuals in any walk of life, and many individual physicians in favour. There are some smallish physician lobby groups opposed, and other physician lobby groups in favour. The CMA (Canadian Medical Association) is not opposed; it made recommendations on how legislation could be implemented during the consultation phase. It's true that the CMA did recommend against requiring all physicians to participate in MAID or be willing to refer a provider, but they did recommend that a registry be set up of physicians who provide MAID so that any individual that was interested could find a willing physician without needing to even go through their GP (and believe me, some people might not want to involve their own GP, for complex reasons). The also recommended that hospitals opposed to MAID (read: Catholic hospitals) NOT be allowed to prevent their physicians from performing MAID. So overall, I don't buy the argument that there is a widespread "doctors lobby" advocating against MAID.my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf0

The problem with this is that an individual's choice is only a real choice if it is freely made and based on accurate information. If you have ever known an elderly or otherwise vulnerable person who is being pressured/abused by their family members, then you might rethink this position. I would also consider that people in the early throes of grief, perhaps due to the death of a life partner or a frightening diagnosis, or individuals with delusional beliefs about death or their own health, might need special protections. That's why the requirements for an assessment of capacity and a waiting period are included, and I'm in favour of them.lukin2006 said:I originally thought the original legislation was fine a few weeks back ... Can anyone explain what this means?
If you can you are not a liberal
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in Burnaby, B.C. he was “encouraged” by the seriousness of the Senate’s recommendations but with Bill C-14, “we do not want to affect the fundamental balance that we achieved.”

No, I can't (but your "you are not a liberal" quip is silly). It's a ludicrous statement and I don't understand wtf he's talking about (I don't know if all of the context was left out of the quote or what).PJfanwillneverleave1 said:Can anyone explain what this means?

I guess I was fucking CRAZY to imagine that the Senate might actually do something right for once. Fuck me, and I SO incredibly pissed off about this! It's so frustrating!!!!!!!

Don't know if it's factual ... But I have read the bill on assisted dying is still unconstitutional, so maybe another Supreme Court challenge on the way? And the person who launched the original challenge, under this legislation, would still be required to leave the country to gain assisted dying ... Government is fucking clueless.
