To each, their own. I started collecting when I went to college because I had been listening to my Dad play records all my life.
    I LOVE MUSIC.

    It's like dating.

Vinyl is the slightly out-of-reach, expensive, and high maintenance date. You put a lot of time, effort, and pressure on yourself to make it work. It makes you feel better about yourself, even when you realize you're not being yourself. And as the relationship gets deeper and deeper, it starts constantly complaining that you don't spend enough time with it at home.

Digital is the cheap date with no expectations. You can take it to Burger King and it doesn't mind in the slightest.

    The Zep reissues are amazing!

The Beatles Mono box set is too!!!
The Beatles Mono box set is literally the most quiet, beautiful sounding vinyl I've ever heard. I was blown away.

For people who "don't get" vinyl, spend a day sitting around with that box set, listening to it and looking at the gatefolds while reading the lyrics and liner notes and tell me if the cd experience compares in any way.

I've been collecting vinyl since the late 90s. Lucky enough to have bought all but one PJ LPs new. I bought CDs for a while and was more selective in my vinyl purchases but kicking myself over a few records I bought on CD instead of vinyl. Now it is very rare that I buy a CD but I have to say its a hobby that costs an absolute fortune. Even though more vinyl is being pressed I have a fear that it will go out of print if I don't buy it immediately which I hate. I have 1000+ records but occassionally I am so tempted to sell the lot.

oh, so it's not better, it's just that was how it was originally done? I just see Jack White recording stuff in mono, and was wondering why that seems to be preferred for vinyl somehow?

yeah, the stereo separation always sounded weird to me on Beatles albums. up until the White Album they recorded everything in MONO. so we have actually been hearing some engineers mix all these years in STEREO. The Beatles didn't have input in those mixes.

As for Jack, I think he ended up recording MONO by accident. He was set to record live on RSD last year and the lathe broke the day before while testing so the MONO lathe was the only one he could find at short notice. at least that is the story I heard.

I actually had a ticket for that RSD show in the blue room but could only get one ticket so I ended up selling it.

I guess you just have to be a fan. Because in no way do I think that the scratchy sound of vinyl is better than a cd.

Vinyl isn't scratchy unless it's scratched or scuffed or generally in poor condition. A record in great condition has no surface noise.

It is definitely a bummer when you get a record that doesn't sound any good just because it was poorly mastered. But oh, the ones that are done right - so amazing.

Yeah. Icky Thump MONO version was issued as the 1st Vault release....
I was trying to forget that one... my ex-wife got it in the divorce. :bawling:

Your main man Billy Corgan also released Adore as MONO only on vinyl. I honestly can't tell much difference but then again I don't have a MONO stylus.

    Speaking of Mr. White....
I had a friend of a friend who was on the Sympathy 4 the R.I. label with the White Stripes offer to sell me this record for $1000..... too rich for my blood. it is kind of the "Benny" of the Third Man World although to me it is just a novelty.

Well... personally it took a long time to get into it for me
but I think it is one of my favorite "Sad Bastard" albums
it makes the list... along with TGA "Get Hurt", Counting Crows "Recovering the Satellites", John Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band", Blind Melon's "Soup".... now there is a collection.
