oh, so it's not better, it's just that was how it was originally done? I just see Jack White recording stuff in mono, and was wondering why that seems to be preferred for vinyl somehow?

yeah, the stereo separation always sounded weird to me on Beatles albums. up until the White Album they recorded everything in MONO. so we have actually been hearing some engineers mix all these years in STEREO. The Beatles didn't have input in those mixes.

As for Jack, I think he ended up recording MONO by accident. He was set to record live on RSD last year and the lathe broke the day before while testing so the MONO lathe was the only one he could find at short notice. at least that is the story I heard.

I actually had a ticket for that RSD show in the blue room but could only get one ticket so I ended up selling it.

I guess you just have to be a fan. Because in no way do I think that the scratchy sound of vinyl is better than a cd.

Vinyl isn't scratchy unless it's scratched or scuffed or generally in poor condition. A record in great condition has no surface noise.

It is definitely a bummer when you get a record that doesn't sound any good just because it was poorly mastered. But oh, the ones that are done right - so amazing.

    Speaking of Mr. White....
I had a friend of a friend who was on the Sympathy 4 the R.I. label with the White Stripes offer to sell me this record for $1000..... too rich for my blood. it is kind of the "Benny" of the Third Man World although to me it is just a novelty.

Well... personally it took a long time to get into it for me
but I think it is one of my favorite "Sad Bastard" albums
it makes the list... along with TGA "Get Hurt", Counting Crows "Recovering the Satellites", John Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band", Blind Melon's "Soup".... now there is a collection.

why is mono now better than stereo?

To me the best thing about The Beatles in Mono box set is that it is 100% All-Analog

why is mono now better than stereo?

Well for The Beatles in particular, the reason I prefer them in mono is because there's several songs where vocals are isolated to one side (the lead vocal in Eleanor Rigby being the most annoying instance for me). Put all the other instruments and sounds where you want, but I want the lead vocal (and to a lesser extent, the drums) centered. Mr. Kite is another example where the lead vocal is isolated one one side in stereo. It blows. All the Beatles songs on my iPhone are in mono because of this. I can't listen to the Beatles in stereo with headphones on....at least for the albums up until The White Album.

The Yellow Submarine "Songtrack" that was released in 1999 is interesting. It's in stereo, but a few of the songs that had vocals isolated to one side on their original stereo releases (Eleanor Rigby, Sgt. Peppers, Hey Bulldog, Nowhere Man among others) have the vocals centered but the rest of the instruments in their original stereo spots. I love it. It's as if whoever mixed that in 1999 thought to themselves "why the fuck is Paul's voice all the way over THERE on Eleanor Rigby?" Unfortunately, the stereo remasters of 2009, as awesome of the are, have the vocals where they originally were for the stereo mixes of the 60's. Bummer. But the mono albums released also in 2009 compliment them so that's cool. But in a perfect world (for me), stereo versions of Please Please Me through Magical Mystery Tour would have all the instruments as they were in their original stereo releases...but with the vocals centered like on the 1999 Yellow Submarine disc.

As for the thread topic, I also don't care about vinyl. At all.

When it comes to the Beatles, they did a rush job pressing the stereo version to get them out in time for the holidays. They took their time with the Mono.

True, however, I absolutely hear the difference between CD and vinyl. It's obvious. CDs sound more crisp and sharp, vinyl sounds warmer. I prefer the warm, rich sound that only vinyl has. This IS due to the format. Even if the exact same source were used, vinyl would sound better to me.

Never understood it either. A friend of mine always tells me I'm insane for thinking Gish & Siamese Dream are the Pumpkins best work. He, too, is an Adore fan. Another friend and I always joke about how this guy likes the worst albums by the best bands.

    Why?
I think the sound is probably better with the right sound system, but the money drain of vinyl would prevent me from diving in. I love music but hearing 85% of the range of the song is good enough for me.

I dont understand the phrase "warm sound of vinyl". I hear that said all the time, but have never understood the meaning. Maybe if i heard a good vinyl setup and then the same song on cd or ipod i might get it, but so far, i aint hearing it.

A song I've heard a thousand times on CD can sound brand new and fresh on vinyl. It becomes brighter, fuller, sometimes feels like a live listening experience.
