Goodell is done. He may survive for a few months while the owners choreograph his exit, but his days are numbered.

The Ravens meanwhile look even worse tonight.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to learn more about football? I feel like I just know the basics. I don't really learn a lot just by watching - except MNF - those guys are awesome.
I have Football For Dummies and it's good. Any videos or films out there? I want to learn more specifics/details about each position and understand plays better. I want to know the difference between a Tampa offence and a West coast offense.
How did you guys learn? By playing? Your dad's taught you? Did you read books? I don't feel like I know the half of it. Any recommendations?

Madden Football for the PlayStation or XBox. Sounds strange to admit but I learned a ton from that game. Specific plays, offensive packages, defensive sets, it is all there.

Great idea! I never even thought of that. Awesome advise, thanks!

That's a ridiculously good question. I feel like I know a lot about football. I'm not saying I could be a wide receiver in Peyton Mannings offense, but I see what he's doing and understand the concepts.

As far as learning, I have no idea how I was taught. I've been watching football ever since I can remember and played from 7th grade through 12th. It's interesting to see how offenses and defenses have changed over the last 25 years. A lot of it has to do with the rules geared so much towards the offense.

To help answer your question, look up videos of Vince Lombardi. I can remember watching an old video of him (I think it's 30 minutes) explaining his famous green bay sweep and other plays. It is very informative.

Cool, thanks. That sounds good - I'll look for it. : )

I taped a show on the NFL Network called Playbook. I've never seen it. It has team supplied video footage used by coaches and supposed to be an in-depth look at plays. Looks good.

Very sad news. I hope he gets his due tributes today instead of hearing about AP, Ray Rice, and Roger Goodell all day.

Looks like Russell Wilson has been to the Ricky Bobby school of hand gesturing. He seems pretty creepy in the American Insurance commercial.

I think that by watching you will take a long time to gain the depth of knowledge you are looking for -- it is easier for those who can sit around and talk it. (Imagine how I feel when I sit with a group from your country and talk strategy @ a Juniors game or something like that -- as a kid raised in the cold of VT I loved and learned hockey at a young age...but it was not the obsession culturally like the NFL was, and I still learn stuff many times when I talk hockey with Canadians)
A few basics books are probably good but I think watching John Gruden or Ron Jaworkski break down film on TV is the best way on the tube you will find to learn.
Someone already mentioned playing Madden but this really is a good way and if you pay attention to what things are called and go through the tutorials it will show you how to recognize the sets and what the tendencies are from those sets.
(Attending a game from the upper deck can be a really fun thing trying to pick out what plays they are running since you can often see just how the chess match between the coaches is playing out.)
