Yeah... I thought that part was unrealistic. I would have probably been more satisfied if he'd just done what anyone would have done in reality, which is say what he had to say to save his career, and then go to rehab for a few months.
I want to talk about this movie with my SIL, who is a recovering alcoholic, to see if she thinks it rings true. From the little I understand, addicts have to hit rock bottom before they will get sober and rock bottom means different things to different people.

I really couldn't figure out which way the movie was going to go, if he was going to sober up or not. I can't see him voluntarily going to rehab or sticking with sobriety unless he was forced to.
No, he probably had to go to prison to get sober. It just didn't work for me because I really didn't believe that that character would have done that. I really don't believe that anyone in his position would have done that. The sacrifice was too large, and I don't have that much faith in humankind, apparently. It just didn't ring true. It was a really good movie (with a good soundtrack), but I just didn't like the end because it was unconvincing.
    Update:

I talked to my SIL about the movie. She hadn't seen it and doesn't plan to so I gave her the basic story and told her about what he did at the hearing. She said NO WAY! He would absolutely lie to save himself. In particular, the more desperate the circumstances, the greater the risks an addict will take.

She also told me that pilots and surgeons have their own AA groups. People in AA hear some incredible stories but apparently nobody can handle hearing what kinds of things pilots or surgeons have done.

I com plenty u derstand why they would have their own AA groups. I know that if I went to an AA meeting, and someone there said that they were flying a commercial airplane or operating on people while drunk, I'd go out of my way to figure out who they are and report them, AA oaths or whatever be damned. My conscience wouldn't allow me not to. So yeah, makes sense for them to keep it in the family!

The Hobbit!!! I Loved it, it doesn't take itself seriously and it shouldn't, you know who's going to live so they can't dangle that carrot in front of you, visually stunning.

I really liked it. But maybe it's is because it seems like every movie I've seen for the last few months has been aweful?

I feel asleep? Then tried again the next day an fell asleep again! Started soooooo slow. Reminded me of the first one. Took forever to get going. But it was visually stunning from why I saw.
