"So we pay a little more" is the argument. Maybe your mom and pop shops didn't close, but how many laid off employees? Of course McDonald's didn't shut down. Thy just reduced the employees work weeks from 38-40 hours to 28-32 hours. And your mcgriddle is now $6.00.0 -
I suggest we increase the percentage tip we give to workers who serve us. It is a nice way to contribute to the working class, no overhead costs, and you know where it is going.0

The kid at the mom and pop burger joint just got a $6k a year raise.
SPEEDY: I would like a chicken sandwich, a large onion ring, and a diet coke.
Kid: Sure, no problem, that will be $23.75

Is that your assumption or a fact that a 19 year old who works at McDonald's is going to buy a bag of dope? Nothing funny if that's your assumption.

Despite what both Wal-Mart and Republicans have been saying, companies can prosper and still have a conscience. When companies pay a living wage, workers benefit. When workers make more money, they spend more money. When people spend more money, the economy is stronger. When the economy is stronger, the nation as a whole benefits.

Barbara Ehrenreich made a great case for how minimum wage is not a living wage in her book Nickle and Dimed, On (not) Getting by in America. In her book, Ehrenreich recounts the great difficulties she faced when she set all of her assets aside and went out and lived off of minimum wage jobs. And it isn't just about the poor wages- it's about the difficulty of the work- work that those who don't have to do it benefit from. If everyone had to take this kind of work and minimum wages for a few years, the general consensus would be more understanding toward the working poor. Too often, those of us who are in a better position take this kind of work and those who perform it for granted. Barbara's words:
"When someone works for less pay than she can live on ... she has made a great sacrifice for you .... The 'working poor' ... are in fact the major philanthropists of our society. They neglect their own children so that the children of others will be cared for; they live in substandard housing so that other homes will be shiny and perfect; they endure privation so that inflation will be low and stock prices high. To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a nameless benefactor, to everyone." (p. 221)"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -

This is a great theory. And it works well when companies can afford to and voluntarily pay well. It has the opposite effect when they are forced by the government.0 -

That's where this comes in: "if you can't afford to pay your employees a living wage with benefits it can be argued that you have no business being in business."0 -

I totally agree. I can't understand why anybody even thinks they should be in business if they can't afford to pay living wages- unless they are in the slave business. And I do not exaggerate."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -

Yeah. Since when are adults supposed to be earning minimum wage to support a family anyway? Minimum wage is for teens, not the older generation with a family to support. Don't go into business if all you're thinking about is profits, and not your adult employees' welfare.0
