Of course our employees have skilled labor wages in the 20's and they deserve this.
Do I think unskilled labor should be anywhere near that no.
Do I think 10$ and hour reasonable for minimum wage ... yes but not in the economy we have now.
How about we get an administration in office who cares about business
and helps business flourish so it can afford to raise wages. Pretty simple really.
The poor struggling minimum wage workers, who are entightled to a $6k a year raise. So says the government.
While for the last 7 years, the skilled, trained worker, has been facing layoffs, paycuts, and job loss.
That's where this comes in: "if you can't afford to pay your employees a living wage with benefits it can be argued that you have no business being in business."
I totally agree. I can't understand why anybody even thinks they should be in business if they can't afford to pay living wages- unless they are in the slave business. And I do not exaggerate.
When did the phrase living wages come into play? It sounds like a phrase derived from the far left when somebody realized minimum wage wasn't a strong enough term. I know its off topic, but I seriously think its silly.

How about we get an administration that cares about people trying to make ends meet? That's what the increase in minimum wage is about.
What's more important - business, or ensuring that we all can put bread on the table, afford housing, electricity and water and take care of a family?

It is a valid point.
The fucking clown who makes my coffee at Dunkin Donuts, who for 5 years cant cant my order correct.
That fucking clown does not deserve a $6k a year raise.
Either does the other clown I deal with, behind the counter of the gas station.

The answer? Stop giving tax breaks for companies that export jobs. You can thank the republicans for keeping that bill in place...

Yeah. Since when are adults supposed to be earning minimum wage to support a family anyway? Minimum wage is for teens, not the older generation with a family to support. Don't go into business if all you're thinking about is profits, and not your adult employees' welfare.
If you are an unskilled worker, you deserve minimum wage. It doesn't matter if your 18 or 48. And in that case, an argument can be that you have no business trying to support a family.

"Living wage" means you can live off it. Minimum wage means you can't. I'll take the so-called "far-left" perspective in this case.

Business is the bread and butter for our working people. It is not one or the other.
We need government policy that promotes an economy of growth, that helps business.
If we had that we would have a minimum wage of 10$ per hour.
And then there are the fools you see on Sunday morning talk shows
saying the minimum wage should be $22.00 an hour....
say what ... wtf! Ridiculous notions.

So that clown doesn't deserve to be able to afford housing? Food? electricity?
That clown should work on learning some skills, so he no longer has to work at a coffee shop for a living, earning minimum wage.
When you were 18 and earning minimum wage, I have a feeling that housing, food and electricity were not in your thoughts. Right or Wrong?

Mom and Pop's who have an employee who works 20 hours a week gets 2900 in a raise from this. That is an awesome raise. That is a lot of money, especially for some businesses that may be just starting or are struggling through a recession.
Jesus...the arrogance of that statement. Not accusing you of arrogance Jeanwah, but that statement is not well thought out IMHO. What about the person who gets 2900 but is no longer eligible for 5000 worth of benefits from the gov't. they are in worse shape because of their "raise"...
do people honestly think that raising the minimum wage can happen without negative consequences? or are those negatives not worth considering?

Well, actually food and electricity, among other things, were very much on my mind when I was 18 and earning minimum wages. I distinctly remember using my last dollar- an old silver dollar my Grandmother had given me- to buy a pack of cigarettes and another time when all I had to eat for two days was rice and ketchup. But I was still a fucking clown at that point in my life.

You know, it just occurred to me that we could have two wage scales: A living wage (sorry, I like that term) for those who need to live off those wages, and a wage learning experience scale for teenagers living at home or retirees trying to stretch their fixed income a little. Why not?

I think this vote is part of the Democrat’s massively successful plan to value perception over policy to the general public. They know the raise is unsustainable in the eyes of the GOP and that it would be blocked.
Hence they are the heroes for doing essentially nothing. This was the essence of the 2012 campaign. Public perception meant more than public policy.

anyone arguing that raising the minimum wage would destroy business need look no further than costco.
Costco is a huge corporation that can (and does) pay their employees well. Johnson's landscaping, on the other hand, is not a huge corporation. So 1 of 2 things would happen, they lay off employees or shut down.
how about they just drum up more business. why not generate more income by raising your prices some?
if they were that good, wouldn't more people want to be their clients/customers?

Genius. Pure genius.
Yeah, it's genius to attempt to get things right when the other party refuses everything that comes to the table.

That sounds reasonable. I hate to say it though, but I think the American public is too used to everything being cheap (which is why we all have more crap than we need) and are quite willing to let somebody perform the service domestically for near-slave wages or produce the goods overseas in what is often a true state of slavery.
We would do well to get used to paying more for quality items- be it food or goods- produced by people who are treated with respect and paid a wage on which they can live reasonably well.

Wow, I wonder if other businesses have thought of that business plan.

In your scenario, I think we see teens and the elderly employed in living wage jobs. Especially if they were cheaper.
I like Jeanwah's point earlier about tax breaks. Give companies tax breaks for hiring locally, although then people would bitch about corporations not paying enough taxes

Successful business owners are savvy enough to find ways of making things work while taking care of their employees. And if you come to a dead end? Time to sell.

Not on one salary, no. Back when I had crap for income, I lived in crap housing with roommates. We split housing, electric, food. I didn't buy flat screen TVs or new computers or ipads every other year. I drove a used car and shopped at discount men's clothiers. I didn't take trips/vacations further than I could drive in a few hours and when I did, we had more people than I care to admit piled into the hotel room.
