minimum wage goes up......prices go up....that's all that will happen...but people will feel warm and fuzzy.
if you want to make more than minimum wage, go get yourself some training and a skill set that is worth something.
And when my mom and pop business falls apart because the government has forced me to give 6k raises to my 10 employees.
Those 10 employees can now go to the hated Costco and hopefully get employment.
Hell, when my business fails because the government just handed out 6k raises, I guess I can go to Costco too!

I don't understand why people can't see that forcing businesses to do anything that costs them money is essentially the same thing as a tax on the citizens. All that ever results is higher cost of products and less people employed.
Does anyone actually think that forcing businesses to provide increased levels of pay or benefits to employees doesn't result in the public/employees actually footing the bills themselves?
The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
Funny according to these stats, the bums who ride the wagon in 40 states make more than an $8 an hour job and 7 states more then $12 hour, ohhh and the kicker 9 states pay a welfare bum more then a teacher. You people keep knocking half decent pay, for a good laugh while your tax dollar basically is providing minimum wage. ha ha ha ha
Really the small mom and pop restaurants can't afford more that minimum wage,
it would cost jobs, seems some are pretty loose with those jobs.
I bet those employed would have something to say about losing them.
Pretty much what a dishwasher said on the news awhile back... don't do me any favors
I think were his exact words.... knowing he'd be out of a job.
here in Ontario Canada minimum wage is 10.25 ... haven't seen too many wal marts or mc donalds shut down or even small mom and pop business's. We pay a little more ... BIG DEAL...

No knowledge of Supply vs. Demand...
Liberals are so stupid when it comes to economics. Raising the minimum wage makes everything go up in prices. Sure her McDonald's example makes it look sustainable...but she fails to mention that every other business with minimum wage workers would have to increase their prices too. Then businesses that use those services will raise their prices to compensate...it's an obvious domino effect. If you're making $40k all those "sustainable" price increases add up.
Yes, let's raise the minimum wage to $22 so that the cost of living skyrockets and our economy becomes based on unskilled labor. Then we'd export all our commodities to free market economies because we can't afford them ourselves.
The market would simply adjust and $22/hr would be the new poor.

"So we pay a little more" is the argument. Maybe your mom and pop shops didn't close, but how many laid off employees? Of course McDonald's didn't shut down. Thy just reduced the employees work weeks from 38-40 hours to 28-32 hours. And your mcgriddle is now $6.00.
I suggest we increase the percentage tip we give to workers who serve us. It is a nice way to contribute to the working class, no overhead costs, and you know where it is going.
The 19 year old kid cooking fries at McDonalds just got a $6K a year raise.
Great, now he can go buy a bigger bag of dope...
And switch from Old Style to Heineken.
Is that your assumption or a fact that a 19 year old who works at McDonald's is going to buy a bag of dope? Nothing funny if that's your assumption.

We give all the 18-19 year olds who flip burgers for a living a $6k a year raise...
We lower the legal drinking age to 18...
We legalize dope in all 50 states...

Despite what both Wal-Mart and Republicans have been saying, companies can prosper and still have a conscience. When companies pay a living wage, workers benefit. When workers make more money, they spend more money. When people spend more money, the economy is stronger. When the economy is stronger, the nation as a whole benefits.
Absolutely.

Barbara Ehrenreich made a great case for how minimum wage is not a living wage in her book Nickle and Dimed, On (not) Getting by in America. In her book, Ehrenreich recounts the great difficulties she faced when she set all of her assets aside and went out and lived off of minimum wage jobs. And it isn't just about the poor wages- it's about the difficulty of the work- work that those who don't have to do it benefit from. If everyone had to take this kind of work and minimum wages for a few years, the general consensus would be more understanding toward the working poor. Too often, those of us who are in a better position take this kind of work and those who perform it for granted. Barbara's words:
"When someone works for less pay than she can live on ... she has made a great sacrifice for you .... The 'working poor' ... are in fact the major philanthropists of our society. They neglect their own children so that the children of others will be cared for; they live in substandard housing so that other homes will be shiny and perfect; they endure privation so that inflation will be low and stock prices high. To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a nameless benefactor, to everyone." (p. 221)

This is a great theory. And it works well when companies can afford to and voluntarily pay well. It has the opposite effect when they are forced by the government.

No, I am sorry, but this thread is fun. Ill stick with this subject matter.
The poor struggling minimum wage workers, who are entightled to a $6k a year raise. So says the government.
While for the last 7 years, the skilled, trained worker, has been facing layoffs, paycuts, and job loss.
Sorry.
Cant walk away from this thread.
Because you know me.

That's where this comes in: "if you can't afford to pay your employees a living wage with benefits it can be argued that you have no business being in business."
anyone arguing that raising the minimum wage would destroy business need look no further than costco.
Costco is a huge corporation that can (and does) pay their employees well. Johnson's landscaping, on the other hand, is not a huge corporation. So 1 of 2 things would happen, they lay off employees or shut down.[/quote]

I totally agree. I can't understand why anybody even thinks they should be in business if they can't afford to pay living wages- unless they are in the slave business. And I do not exaggerate.

Yeah. Since when are adults supposed to be earning minimum wage to support a family anyway? Minimum wage is for teens, not the older generation with a family to support. Don't go into business if all you're thinking about is profits, and not your adult employees' welfare.

I hear Costco is hiring at a pretty good wage.
