but one thing i cannot do is work for some cheap ass bastard who views me as a god damn number as i flip his burgers & chili smear his fucking hot dogs @ his (bullshit dream) hog stand
Right.
And as a grown man, as a fucking ADULT, I wouldnt expect you to be working in the hot dog stand flipping burgers, for minimum wage. But the 18-20 year old kid who is putting himself through school, just might appreciate the job flipping burgers.

speedy sold ice cream cones in chicago as a kid down at the corner dairy queen for $1.82 an hour, yes/no?
i have a home depot 5 blocks away. i drive the extra 2 miles and go to the mom and pop hardware store. i get better service there and i can always find what i am looking for and get in and out in 5 minutes. this is not the case with the big box stores. sure i pay more at the mom and pop stores, but at least they can afford to pay their staff a respectable wage.
i have my guitars repaired at the mom and pop store. they do a better job, and they treat my expensive and vintage gear with the care and respect that that stuff deserves. not like guitar center who has a high school kid making minimum wage attempting to repair guitars. sure i pay more at the mom and pop store but they do a better job, and they pay their employees a respectable wage.

And Chadwick drove around on America's highway's in a Semi, until he was busted for driving under the influence of drugs. Losing is license, and losing his job. But at least people were no longer in danger of Chadwick killing them with his 80,000lb truck, loaded with hazardous materials.
Why do you feel the need to play the insult game with me today Chadwick?

Can someone who supports the 2.85 raise in the minimum wage answer this question...are there any negatives to raising the minimum wage that would be felt by those getting the raise?

Negatives to the people getting the $3 raise?
What do you mean?
The guy is making an extra $120 a week.
Where do you see any negatives?
Take me piece by piece..... Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
Being opposed to a $6,000 per year increase to someone's "minimum wage" does not make someone opposed to the concept of the minimum wage. That kind of an increase is extreme and should have been voted down.
Also, I have been and will continue to be critical of Libertarians. I believe their often rigid ideology is naive, utopian, and sometimes misguided. But they should not all be judged by the rantings and ravings of the followers of Ron Paul and his bouncing baby boy. That is unfair. There are many who do not deserve to be lumped in with that crowd. We should be able to disagree without thinking all who disagree with us are deranged ideologues.
Well-said.
As to your last paragraph, I think this should (and does) apply to any and all parties.
No lumping!

in the short term the minimum wage guy will feel good, in the long term, doesn't really matter...prices will jump and ultimatily, his buying power will be the same.

I have been driving a semi for almost 25 years.
I have a nice little 401k going.

As a kid I worked in fast food joints and department stores.

There's a hardware store a couple blocks from here - Koontz. Been around for 75 years. I have no clue what they pay their employees (how would *anyone* know this?), but they never fail to know their shit. Great customer service, knowledge, supply.
I figure they've earned my business along with that of many others, and assume that revenue/profit is passed on to their employees.
However, and to be fair, I also have to assume the Home Depot/Lowe's/Orchard Supply, etc. do the same. I've never had bad service at those places either; the employees seem happy and knowledgeable as well. It's just a pain in the ass for me to drive cross-town when I can get the same quality, assistance and inventory from a more convenient place.

that is not very true what you typed up. to some degree it may be true but you do not have all the details & you are smearing me in a false fashion.
i have worked my ass into the earth since age 10. this is a fact. im a crippled up mess & worked very hard in my life & played harder & did not take very good care of myself. i know about being a poor ass bastard working for beans or little to nothing.
the semi driving actually saved me in many ways. i had god damn $$$$$$$. honest god damn $$$$$ too.
but as a human being i am not designed to cover 800 miles daily or whatever. i had money coming out of my ears as a driver but it was truly slave labor.
for your information mr. chicago know every god damn thing & snotting little shit
i never once hauled drugs in my loads. i never got fired for drugs.
i quit smoking weed & went and had two interviews & two pee tests w/ two different companies back to back the same fucking day. one company said i failed their UA due to THC whilst company B said i was hired & that they were cleaning up the truck i'd be driving.
i was rail roaded & hadn't smoked marijuana in 6 weeks or more.
each and every trucking company choses their own score on the DOT's chart on THC levels. company A has a number where if you've even breathed marijuana in a smoky room you will fail whereas company B that said i passed has a more common sense approach and will hire a guy if they have been a clean brean for a month or two.
you are a truck driver you need to do your research & stuff
I was a candy striper and a maid at the Ramada Inn ...
then a floral designer making not much more than minimum wage.
I worked hard at all three, felt valuable and I was happy.

maybe they will pay a little more in income and social security tax. that is the first "negative" i thought of.
i think if people were paid a little more they would feel like they are valuable to the business. feeling valued is an important part of having a good staff. if you have employees who feel that they are being treated like shit or undervalued by the boss then that is contagious to the whole staff. your customer service certainly suffers because the staff does not feel that sense of worth when trying to help someone find a metric socket set.

My home office days were limited to 3 years as I recouped from a back injury.
I am enjoying being back to the office where the action is.
Before my injury I worked at two locations and raised my children
and helped raise a couple extra of their friends
life has been good to me and I hope I have been good to life.
I was a candy striper and a maid at the Ramada Inn ...
then a floral designer making not much more than minimum wage.
I worked hard at all three, felt valuable and I was happy.
very nice. thank you for sharing.
i've done grass cutting at age 10 & other maintence tasks at a condo, dad was my boss, it was dad's 2nd job.
i detassled corn two summer, 13 & 14 years old.
i sorted hangers in a department store & i ate their chocolates in the basement hanger sorting area
i worked for a counties secondary roads department
i cooked pizzas
i cooked tacos & washed dishes & made enchiladas & burritos
i worked at two differrent saw mills stacking lumber & making pallets..one mill hired me 3 different times
i worked construction jobs...shoveled around & poured concrete & worked in asphalting roads
i reroded overpasses & struts & things for highway overpasses
i hauled hog shit out into fields & knifed the crap into the ground with my huge ass truck
i worked on hog farms
i hauled a lot of different things in the u.s & canada & alaska
i have 2 years of college; math, environmental science & writing
i worked for the state of washington at the college's hatchery raising trout & salmon as work-study
i'm sure i've left out many different tasks i've performed & for a small wage

You know your point has hit home when it's ignored.
I'm glad I overslept this morning. And I'm glad this is all being carried out on computer screens or half of this crew would be in the ER.
Carry on my friends. No, better yet, go have a smoke in a tree and relax a while.

My first thought with this thread was that you would build a more valuable, more dedicated and therefore (possibly) more efficient workforce within your company if you paid better and offered better benefits packages. One of the local businesses here in town (coffee shop) pays better than minimum wage and offers benefits but they all work full time and they have fewer people that staff each place. However, they reward by only promoting from within and I think they have the loyalty of their employees AND they have earned the loyalty of their customers. However, I think we are missing sight of a bigger issue. We are swiftly moving towards a more educated and more skill oriented labor force. Jobs that need to be done for lower wages will continue to be shipped to other countries and we (the American work force) will have to settle for lower paid jobs if we refuse to get reeducated or earn new skills. I think the days of working one industry/business for one company are long gone. I am already on a second career and contemplating a third in which the skill sets have translated but the jobs I perform are very different. I think that is the future of American labor.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...
I wonder how many of those pigs you slaughtered ended up in Chicago, being served on a bun, with mustard, onions, and pickles?

You're such an Internet tough guy, and a typical crybaby that swears at people when they don't agree with his communist policies. I'm willing to bet that on your own, in person, you are timid and afraid. Go ahead and bully people on the Internet, lol.
I'm a communist?
Um... OK.
Let's see... I hold down four jobs, I work day and night, have a lot of people who depend on me, I direct movies, edit TV shows, run a blog hub, cast and produce and mentor new content developers and I pay everyone very well because good help is hard to find and I want to make sure that they all stay with me and don't take what I taught them somewhere else.
I gave my cleaning man a raise because he does a fantastic job and he not only deserves to be rewarded for his work and dedication but I want a clean house and I'm willing to pay the best guy to do it.
I pay my assistant very well because managing my time requires a degree in time management and dealing with my temperamental meltdowns.
I'm a "communist" because I see that the economy isn't going to grow if the vast majority of the country can't afford to pay their rent.
OK so here's why I think the minimum wage needs to be raised to keep the economy afloat.
Yes, I work in porn but my REAL job is entertainment.
I make and sell entertainment. Not just porn, I'm also producing a SciFi series about zombies. The model for that is people either pay for a premium TV channel to watch it OR they buy it from a download service like iTunes. If people can't afford to pay their rent and food... they sure can't afford to buy episodes of my shows. So while it's all great that the Romeys and the Koch brothers have 50 billion in the bank... my business and EVERY business that deals in luxury and entertainment items depends on a large consumer base with disposable income.
GREEDY... I ripped into you about the hotdog stand but look at it this way...
A Hotdog stand is a luxury item too. Hotdogs are cheaper at the grocery store. If people are on a tight budget, they're not going out for many hot dogs or movies or buying new running shoes. They will spend their money if they have it but right now... all that money is going to the top 1%. And those people can only eat so many hot dogs.
Like it or not... America is no longer a manufacturing economy. We are now a consumer economy. We don't make things anymore. We buy them. And if we're not paying our workers well enough to even meet the basic necessities of life... well, how many hotdogs are they going to buy?
Let's pay the workers what they're worth.. a wage they can live on.. and they will turn around and spend that money and we ALL benefit from that.
I wonder how many of those pigs you slaughtered ended up in Chicago, being served on a bun, with mustard, onions, and pickles?

And talk about a revolving 401K package!
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

As long as both men are happy, I guess thats all that matters.
