I'll respectfully disagree on Hesher. I had high hopes for that film but found it to be a total waste of time. I thought it was extremely unrealistic and they could have done much more with many of the characters. I don't know what is going on with Natalie Portman lately but where she used to be automatic for a good film, recently she has made some terrible choices.

Damn. I kinda wanted to see Hersher. I still may check it form the library.
btw, Heisenberg -- I know its not movies, but that Breaking Bad series you star in is awesome! I'm in the middle of season 3 right now.

I got Buitiful with Javier Bardem, Green Hornet, and Love & other drugs for this weekend..supposed to rain a lot!

Yes...my show Breaking Bad is legit!! Each season gets better and better. It's a shame that after next season I will no longer be on TV...by the way...wanna buy some meth?

As for the films you mentioned..."Biutiful" is amazing. Javier Bardim is fantastic, but it is a very sad film. Haven't seen "Green Hornet" but the only redeeming quality I found in "Love & Other Drugs" was Anne Hathaway's nakedness :thumbup: Other than that it's your stereotypical formulaic rom-com.

I watched "Trailer Park Boys" last week. If you like white trash, hapless fools bumbling their way through criminal escapades, this flick is for YOU!

"Bad Teacher" this week. Extra funny, because I have a friend who's a teacher, and I get a little tired of the "Woe is us, teachers work harder than anyone else in the world" shtick.

a rarity for my wife and I: two awesome movies in a row! Over the weekend we went to Ides of March, excellent. Then last night we rented Horrible Bosses. Fucking hilarious. Jennifer Aniston is the SHIT.

I'd have to say this is my film of the year!

So many wonderful moments in this film, it really is a masterpiece of visual storytelling! But my favourite bit has to be when

Driver puts on the stuntman face mask and goes after Nino, he looks through the window and I was thinking he would go in and kill him right there and then with anonymity (despite still wearing that signature jacket). What he sees inside is such a brilliantly captured moment as Nino is falling backwards in hysterics, no doubt at his own joke, while, presumably his woman, turns away in bored disgust. I just thought that bit was perfect. Then you realise that of course Driver isn't wearing the mask to remain anonymous, he has stunt work to do! The two of them on the beach, those giant rubbery faces...loved Ron Perlman in this. The "you're not very good at this" line in particular! Yeah, at times its a bit heavy handed with its symbolism (the oasis at the end of the dry river for example) and the Scorpion and Frog line was a little cliché,

but this film felt like it belongs in the company of other greats like Taxi Driver and Scarface. Its not often you feel like you've just watched an instant classic, its this year's Wrestler for me. Plus, Ron Pearlman is in it for fucksake...worth the price of admission right thar!

I know the theory that Shakespeare did not write the works attributed to him is not new by any means, but I'm nowhere near educated on the sides of the argument. Interesting stuff.

I'm currently five pages deep in a debate on the topic on the IMDG forum :geek:. There are experts coming out of the woodwork to get in edgewise!

Gremlins

This was on TV last night so I ordered a pizza and got all comfy on the sofa ready for a dose of warm and fuzzy nostalgia. I watched this film a lot when I was young, yet unlike Ghostbusters which was released around the same time it'd been a good ten years or so since I gave the little green monsters my full attention. The dark humour was the most familiar, the mother's fight in the kitchen, part creepy with great use of that Bing Crosby song and part mischievously fun as she dispatches her foes in domestically inventive ways. The balance is masterful, one minute i'm on the edge of my seat as she approaches a wriggling Christmas stocking, the next laughing as she's attacked by her Christmas tree. The film uses Christmas iconography practically at every step, yet somehow it walks a line between being cliche, moments like the roaring log fire ablaze with a recently decapitated gremlin head so playfully subtle yet wonderfully powerful. Then you have Kate's tragic story about her father, just heartbreaking.

The puppetry, however, completely took me by surprise this time around. The scene in the bar, as Kate tries to survive by serving a constant supply of beer and peanuts, goes on longer than the narrative requires but you get as caught up in it as the film makers. Whether Joe Dante was trying to play on the fears of small town America with all those black stereotypes or the comedy was 'just of it's time', I must confess to never having given it much thought before. All those dark sunglasses, breakdancing and fried chicken eating stick out like a sore thumb now though. Pushing that aside, the characterisation of Stripe as the leader sat gambling with his hideous gangster moll by his side is joyous. And the stop motion scene of hundreds of gremlins charging forward from the darkness can't help but make you pine for the old days.

I never really understood why there were so many scenes of the inventor father making his way back from a convention, they sort of work as a calm juxtaposition to the chaos erupting back home but certainly fail to bring any additional laughs. That's about as critical as I can get with this one, magical Christmas anarchy that is as thrilling as it has ever been.
