please verify with deadspin that this has never ever happened and get back to me on that one. i'm sure they have youtube clips going back 30 years

I love that clip of Chambliss' AL-winning homer in 1976 where he couldn't even get to the plate with people mugging him on the 3rd base line. Wild times.

that's really one of the things our generation kind of missed out on---fans storming the field (with the exception of college). from rizzo bringing the cops on horseback onto the field in '80 to the cops on bikes in '08...would be cool to see the fans storm the field and celebrate with the players. alas, that'll never happen though.

I don't think the Phillies fan base is great, by any means. There were all kinds of empty seats in the 9th inning last night. Huge contingent of fair weather fans. But you were trying to say that it's cheaper to get Phils playoff games than Yanks, and that's just not true.

Phils fans are just like Yanks fans; they'll turn out for a winning team. It's been a long time, but those crappy Yankees teams of the late 80s/early 90s couldn't draw flies.

Yankees didn't start drawing until 98. Won't argue that, I dont think they drew 3 million until 99. I also didn't say that it was cheaper to get into Phillies for the playoffs I simply stated that because someone got a ticket for $70 today does not mean they are not selling since Fixer got lower level for around $110 or something. Tickets drop day of game. I then agreed that Phillies tickets are more expensive and said why I thought so.

Cliffy be done with this please - after your fans performance in game 3 i wouldn't be ripping on others. Plenty of empty seats behind home plate, fan running onto the field, and 75% of the crowd leaving when it was 3-0.

Uh ohhhhhhhhhh. ESPN's Accuscore has San Fran favored 52/48%. Shit. We better not even play this game.

Gotta love being off today, bitches! Miller Lite consumption is imminent....

The only problem I have with last night are some of the things that were done at the end (I won't point out here, feel free to find on your own) and the guy running on the field. Hamilton took a beating from what I understand but there was no way around that, the bleacher creatures were going to be out of line and they were. I don't agree with it but it was going to happen no matter what.

The stadium emptied out in the 9th, that was a disaster. I didn't see the 9th of your game but Johnny said there were a lot of empty seats the other day. As for behind home plate, I actually thought they had the best fans I have seen in a long time back there last night

And just at a time when there's been a solid influx of people into the city as opposed to the fleeing for the burbs that's been going on for decades. One thing about this city - they ALWAYS know how to fuck up a good thing. Love this city, but the infrastructure of its politics and administration are so fucking corrupt. That's always been the real problem with this city.

Where ever there is money there will be people trying to steal it

One way to curb this...how about instead of cash give the poeple a check ? Anything over $1,000 you get a check or the option to keep playing then get the check for the remainder ? Standing in the middle of the casino floor while the attendent counts the money into your hand is not safe or smart. i'm betting this was an older guy they mugged.

Agreed, from everything I read, the city has come a long way in the past 5-10 years in terms of people moving here. I thought these casinos were an awful idea from the beginning as I think I mentioned a few months back.

Have you ever read A Prayer for the City by Buzz Bissinger about Ed Rendell? If not, you should immediately. It is one of the best books about urban america/politics that I have ever read, not that I have read a lot. Edit: It is about exactly what you describe above. Check it out.

The thing is, they shouldn't be having to come up with ways to stop crime at a fucking casino in Philadelphia. This shouldn't even be a problem.

I love how close knit and local this city is, but the incestuous nature of all things in this city is sickening. If you're not from around here, and don't have a connection, it's hard as shit to get a job. And don't even get me started on this being the union capitol of the country. Unions make me sick.

I'm not even talking sports, because I think when it comes to them I really don't care about the national image, but if you really think you have a shot at bringing in an international event like the World Cup or something, then you better do a fucking better job of restoring an image than all of these politicians worrying about themselves.

I'll have to look into that book though.

I think he's opposed to the idea of a city getting out of debt by using a casino.

I completely agree. As I am sure I have mentioned, I am more familiar than most outsiders with Philadelphia since my girlfriend is from Fishtown/Port Richmond and what you said is really true. It is really insane how many jobs are through connections, that's all I see especially when it comes to blue collar jobs. Agreed on the Unions as well, a lot of electricians and carpenters hang out at Liberties.

I do think Philly will have a tough time getting the World Cup and while I would love it (if i am still here), there are too many cities on the east coast with a better reputation.

It's a good one. I think you will like it from everything we have discussed. I believe he won the Pulitzer for it.
