Oswalt only has made 4 starts at the Bank. He's 4-0 with a 2.60 era.

If this deal happens, the Phils will have over 150 million committed next season with only 16 players under contract:

Howard, Utley, Polanco, Rollins, Raul, Victorino, Ruiz, Schneider, Gload
Halladay, Hamels, Blanton, Oswalt, Lidge, Madsen and Baez

You'd still have a lot of holes with a this team. Obviously, guys like Brown, Happ, Francisco, etc. would be cheap as the Phils can pretty much dictate their salaries but you still have no bullpen and no righty bat.

Anyone watching this San Fran/LA game? Ha! Good stuff! Bochy came out and called shenanigans on Mattingly for going to the mound, then walking off, then technically coming back to say something to Broxton. So with the bases loaded and 1 out in the top of the ninth the ump took Broxton out of the game and demanded a new pitcher get on the mound. Mattingly just stared for a while over at Bochy. Good stuff.

Yeah, I'm watching it. This game is awesome. Donnie Baseball just lost the game for his team. I hope SF puts up 4 more runs so they can get back to fighting

the SF announcers are great. I wish it was the LA feed so we'd get Vin Scully, but the SF guys are top 5 in baseball.

The phils are probably 27th in baseball. Sarge saves them from being last

Scully is awesome. Last night I learned Jeremy Affedlt's whole life story while he was warming up. Regarding the Phillies announcers, I like Tom McCarthy. I liked him during the two years he did the Mets though his voice is similar to Gary Cohen.

scully is the best ever. he does the games by himself and he just spews info the entire game.

mccarthy is brutal. he never shuts up. and his fake laugh makes my skin crawl

Ugh. Seriously? I absolutely can't stand him or Wheeler. They just don't know how to shut the hell up and let the game take over. And they constantly talk down to their audience. Maybe it's because of Wheeler because McCarthy's not half as bad when Sarge is on there with him. The radio broadcast is infinitely better - wish those guys would get the TV gig.

I don't know. I'm not with the majority here. Scully's alright - like he's always on point and seems to have the right phrase for everything - but I just can't stand how he sounds like he's pre-recorded or something. I don't know, just me. It feels like he's sitting in a studio booth doing an overdub of the game.

And to your McCarthy point. He should make your skin crawl - him and Wheels are pedophiles.

    God damn, I miss Harry.

I haven't really listened to McCarthy a lot since he left the Mets, so I don't know the situation in the Phillies' booth. I know from what I've read in the Harry Kalas book that Wheeler is not well-liked, so I think it might be Wheeler's lack of quality broadcasting that might bring down McCarthy.

Is that the book written by Randy Miller? I gotta read that sooner than later. Have heard nothing but good things.

regarding the budget, maybe its possible they will loosen their belts slightly next year? ya never know...

Cards in on Haren and Westbrook. Carpenter/Wainwright/Haren/Garcia would be pretty solid.

How you guys feeling today? I believe it was Fixer and I that talked a while back about how Oswalts numbers have been trending down, although they have bounced back this year and he is still a very good pitcher. Is he worth the price tag though? Solat brings up a good point that it will mean $150 mil comitted to only 16 players. Do you trust Amaro to fill out important spots on a very tight budget? If the Phillies get the Astros to kick back some money that means a bigger haul for them.

its a mixed bag for me. this trade just further illustrates how god awful the 2nd cliff lee trade was. at the same time, at least amaro recognizes the mistake and is trying to rectify it.

halladay/oswalt/hamels is a fucking solid rotation though. i think i'm more concerned than some others in here about an even more lefty heavy lineup.

but if we can get anyone to kick back some $$, it's ed wade thats for sure.

yeah cliffy, it was definitely me that discussed oswalt with you. I worry about him at his age and workload breaking down over the next few years. if you look at his numbers his IP and K/9 rates have steadily declined over the last 5 years or so. That being said, the phils are desperate for another pitcher (would have been nice to have cliff lee, but I digress). I'm just scared to death to see the package that RAJ gives away.

the LH lineup isn't ideal, but they can work around that. for example, vs LH starters they could roll this lineup out

    rollins
    polanco
    utley
    howard
francisco (francisco/victorino can be flip flopped...I don't think it matters who hits 5 here)
    victorino
    brown
    ruiz

They might be more inclined to play francisco in RF and keep ibanez in LF as brown develops. Either way I don't think this is a terrible lineup. Should be good enough if rollins and victorino start contributing. That ball victorino missed last night was terrible. He had to dive, but that's an easy play. I catch that with my eyes closed.

Absolutely, this trade must hurt for Amaro. A big kick in the balls. It is a very solid rotation but honestly, after losing Werth, even with his struggles the Phillies lineup is not really that scary. Don't get me wrong, the rotation would be stellar, it just seems like Amaro is treating the Phillies like a fantasy team at times and just going after big fish.

For sure about the kickback, but that just means more prospects.

Love articles like this. Interesting stuff. Might be too sabermetric-centered for some on here
