The mythological figure of Jesus. He didn't actually exist, but for arguments sake, if he did, then he was an Arab. I just get the impression that many middle American, church going patriots would rather forget this fact, and instead prefer to imagine him as one of their own:

If Jesus was a drummer then Keith Moon must be God.

I beg to differ. About his existence, that is.

I've studied a bit ancient history, and I think it's highly likely he did exist and was probably a pretty great guy :)

However, his story was obviously co-opted, edited and embellished (an understatement) by the church for their own purposes. But there's quite a lot of historical writing which refers to him so I really don't believe they completely invented him, they just turned a man into a myth.

I think it's pretty fascinating how easily some people recognize the mythology in other religions, but not in their own. American Christians with no knowledge of ancient history are really some of the most annoying people to talk to :) They easily recognize the mythology of the Greeks and Egyptians and Hindus, but insist that the Judeo-Christianity mythology is the real thing.

Back then it was very common for people to believe that great men (and bad men, for that matter), as well as kings and queens were part-God. Mysticism colored everything and these stories were passed along orally and embellished over time. There's so many examples besides Jesus. Gilgamesh is another that persisted in almost the same geographic area (Mesopotamia and Sumeria) for thousands of years.

The persistence and spread of the Jesus myth and creation myths of that area vs. all others speaks to the organizational, political and educational power of the church in ancient times. History is written by the victors...

I'm with you (well... up until the 'and was probably a pretty great guy'!). A man with the name Jesus (or whatever his name was in his language) most probably did exist. Son of god, saviour of man? Certainly not. Current days in London, he may be the guy on his soap box in Speakers Corner, possibly creating disruption and being arrested. Maybe he was even a bit of an anarchist or revolutionary! It is also very likely that this 'Jesus' is not even one person but a myth put together based on several people/events (a bit like King Arthur - though I would really, really like for King Arthur to have been a real person!).

I'm pretty sure Jesus was born in the Hamptons so he was certainly white except during the summer sailing season when he received a nice seasonal tan.

Well, I get hopeless crushes on anarchist and revolutionaries, so that'd be a "great guy" in my book ;)
