Gimme a break with this "eye for an eye" crap.

So let's say some guy rapes and kills my sister....you're basically saying I should get back at him by raping and killing HIS sister. That's beyond stupid. You can't fight against violence with more violence. It doesn't work.

If someone raped and killed your sister, you better believe I'd be all for someone taking a broomstick to his ass. How do you know it doesn't work? When's the last time it's been legally implemented? At least hundreds of years. Our current punishment system is a complete crock. It doesn't prevent crime at all. If punishments fit the crime better, I think people would think twice. You have pot smokers locked up in the same place as murderers and rapists. Sorry, our current system does not work either.

I didn't say our current punishment system is great.

I'm saying "eye for an eye" is complete garbage for many reasons...one of which is that it doesn't value life in any way.

Which brings us back to the point of how war devalues life in the eyes of the men who fight it. Which brings us back to why a soldier would throw a puppy off a cliff. Which brings us back to why it's hypocritical to say a person values life but then calls for this obviously disturbed young soldier's head on a pike.

lol you value life, but you're in favor of "eye for an eye".

Next time I see a little kid kill a bug, I'll be sure and let you know so you can come and throw him off a cliff.

Ok, you are taking it a little to the extreme. I'm talking the most heinous of crimes, i.e. sacrificial rituals, molestations and gruesome senseless murders. I don't think many people would have a problem with those people being sentenced to similar punishments. Sitting in a jail cell is just getting off easy for them in my book.

I think it's a little out of context to say I would throw a little kid off a cliff who kills a bug. If someone chronically abused a dog, kicking them, starving them, etc, I would be all for showing them how it feels. Maybe it's just me, but I don't deal in absolutes. I take every situation case by case and judge each on its own merits. You can sensationalize what I say all you want, but I feel confident in my judgements.

+1...can't understant people who say think that if someone kill a puppy he/she deserves to die....where's the value of life there?

I think that's a bit extreme, but he should certainly pay for that kind of insanely disgusting act in some way other than a slap on the wrist by the military, don't you think????

Question: What would you think if he threw your 2 year old daughter over a cliff while laughing and joking around? Different story I'd imagine.

Of course improving economic conditions and education is by far the most important factor in curbing crime. No argue there. Maybe I should just bow out of this argument, because the anarchist/nonconformist in me looks down on our system in many cases. I usually have sympathy for vigilantes and personal justice in cases when the justice system fails, which is more often than not.

of course he should pay, what he did was an act of cruelty against animals and he showed no respect for life!!! :)

    life time prison for him
...I don't know if I'm the only one who think this, but I think that life time prision is worse than death penalty

I value all life equally. That statement does not in any way suggest at what level life is valued. It could mean it is all worthless or it is all sacred. My point was that I don't have this ridiculous notion that ants are more important than sharks or people are more important than hummingbirds. I'm talking on a large, global scale. Again, individual cases are different. This person to me, because of their actions, is near worthless to me. He is absolutely below a slug to me.

I think it's a pretty obvious attempt at smearing the thousands of U.S. soldiers who would never do something like that because someone has a bone to pick with our boneheaded involvement in Iraq.

I think you are taking it to the extreme, that's what I'm getting at. Many people (like me) DO have a problem with those people being sentenced based on an eye-for-an-eye system. It's a despicable system, and anyone who truly values life would never support it.
