and that's the season. how many runners did we leave stranded tonight? how many runners did Kotsay leave on base this series? this team was veryyy different from last year's team.

Great season Red Sox next year I'm going to MAKE SURE I go to Fort Myers for Spring Training cause when I do the Sox win a title.
Congrats Rays You deserve getting to the World Series. Job well done, I'll actually be rooting for ya against the Phillies.

I thought Boston was gonna go all the way.
Can't win them all. Great series though.
BJ Upton was incredible and should get the ALCS MVP, and congrats to his team.PJ- 04/29/2003.06/24,25,27,28,30/2008.10/27,28,30,31/2009

Everyone in Philly is breathing easier now.
I think Philly is screwed either way. way too long of a layoff. Winning tonight, and having 2 days off, will keep Tampa sharp. Their rotation is set up perfectly. Philly's Game 3 pitcher will be working on 10-12 days rest. As I said a few days ago, the next chapter on the Yankees/Sox "rivalry" begins tonight----fighting for the wild card as Tamp looks down with scorn and ridicule0 -
I gotta hand it to the Rays, they have a great team that's probably going to scare me for years to come. Boston just got outplayed, plain and simple. I really hope the Sox make the right move and don't re-sign the Captain. He'll always be a hero in Boston but he's clearly done as a hitter. He's above average in the field but he's a liability at this point. It's time to move on. I can't wait until spring now!I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.0

PJGurl I didn't know you were a fan COOL. I'll root for the RAYS in the WS. The Sox fought hard till the very end and we can make it back to the WS cause once there Francona is STILL undefeated.

The Phils are my National League team, but as nothingman44 can backup, I go to Citizen's Bank Park in red Sox gear when the two play each other.
That said, callers on talk radio in Philly wanted to play the Red Sox because they wanted to beat the Champs, but think the Rays will be easier to beat. Philly does have an awful history with Tampa in the post season though. Lost the the NFC Championship game to the Bucs in the last game at the Vet and lost Game 7 to the Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals when the Lightning won the Cup.
I think we're going to see a totally revamped Sox and Yanks team next year as Epstein and Cashman adjust to Tampa's success. Both have one huge advantage over the youth of Tampa - revenue to buy better players to fill in holes and their farm systems are both almost as deep as Tampa's. The AL East is going to be real interesting in the next few years.- Busted down the pretext

Both Boston and the Yanks will never have what made Tampa what they are this year----the #1 pick in the draft year in and year out. Buying up players who are past their prime for megadeals doesn't win. Spending nine figures on a fantasy team doesn't work. It did in the roid era when guys in their late 30's/early 40's were in their prime. Not anymore. Without roids and speed, baseball is once again a young man's game.0 -

It's never too early to think about 2009.
Sox payroll next year cuts $63,000,000 or so off the books assuming they can trade Lugo for a bag of baseballs. If they have to eat part or most of his salary obviously the total will drop. This includes Manny, Tavarez, Varitek, Kotsay, Byrd, Schilling, Timlin, Cora, Casey, Colon, Ross and hopefully Lugo coming off the books.
Their payroll next year currently is at about 90 mil with the Sox most likely exercising the 4 mil option on Wakefield and giving Youk and Papelbon contracts around 8 mil a year to avoid arbitration. No one else is up for arbitration other than Lopez as far as I can tell.
So that gives the Sox about 40-50 mil to play around with to get another solid starter, most likely trade for a catcher (unless they bring Tek back at a lower cost), a couple of bats off the bench and another bullpen arm.
Your core coming back:
SP: Beckett, Lester, Dice K, Wakefield, Bucholz, Bowden and hopefully a solid starter and maybe Masterson though I like him in the bullpen
RP: Papelbon, Oki, Delcarmen, Masterson - maybe? Lopez, Aardsma, and a couple of other arms to fill out the bullpen.
C: ????, either Cash or Ross as backup
IF: Youklis, Pedroia, Lowrie, Lowell, Carter/Bailey, and a backup middle IF
OF: Drew, Ellsbury, Crisp, Bay, and another OF
DH: hopefully a healthy Ortiz
Sox don't need a lot of work, but need to tweak some holes in the roster and add depth. They need to make sure, they don't go back into the post season with a 6 man order and 3 automatic outs next year, but are in real good shape for next year.- Busted down the pretext

If the Yanks can get away with saying Matsui is homegrown, the Sox had 10 homegrown guys on their post season roster. If not, they still had 8 which is way more than they had in 2004 when the only homegrown guy was Nixon. The Sox have adjusted quite well in terms of not making any mega deals lately - with the exception of Drew and Lugo.
The Sox have been very good at signing all their draft picks and developing their system from being barren at the turn of the century.- Busted down the pretext
