I think the allure of calling Dave Grohl a great drummer has more to do with how hard he hits the skins and the amazing production that he gets on his drum tracks.

Same thing with Lars Ulrich--except the fact that he's a douche bag. I remember listening to Hero Of the Day (from Load) and thinking "what a great song they've made here. It's too bad Lars fucked it up by drumming exactly how he does in every other song."

    list (no order):
    John Bonham
    Keith Moon
    Neil Peart
    Terry Bozzio
    Jimmy Chamberlin
    Danny Carey

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Stephen Perkins (Jane's and Porno)?!

Tre' Cool is actually one of the most underrated drummers and I'm not even a diehard Greenday fan.

Carey does far more diverse and creative things than Bonham has ever done. Double bass is just one of those things. Danny Carey's coordination FAR, FAR surpasses Bonham. Have you ever watched some live video of Carey? Carey is one of the most coordinated drummers in rock. I just don't think you know enough about playing drums to realize that Carey is far surperior to Bonham on every level.

I completely respect your view JamnPearl, but your perspective is slightly flawed. We will never know exactly how coordinated John Bonham could be because he was completely shitfaced whenever he was drumming!

Just because someone is pioneering in their field doesn't mean they are the best at what they do. I'm sure there are plenty of computer geeks who far surpass Bill Gates in their skills, but people aren't going to talk about them, cause he revolutionised computing. Buddy Holly and many others came before the Beatles, but they happened to be the right band in the right place at the right time, and so they will always be remembered as 'the best' - doesn't mean it's true. I hear more Zeppelin in modern rock than I do Beatles, but they won't be seen as important becasue the beatles came first.

I think you are getting what i'm saying mixed up. I'm not saying Carey is known as the greatest rock drummer, i'm talking purely skill. Of course Bonham is one of the most well known drummers, can't deny that. He certainly is a more important drummer than Carey is or ever will be. The thing i'm saying is, is that Carey's skill on the drumset far surpases anything Bonham ever did.

  • Keith Moon by a landslide... a brilliant natural talent, unmatched and scads of fun.

Honorable mentions from me to Carl Palmer of ELP... technically one of the best ever, and DJ Bonebrake of X... strong, creative, awesome.

I've also been impressed by Tre Cool though I've never seen Greenday live... I do think he's got it going on though.

As good as they are... there are some jazz/funk drummers such as Dennis Chambers out there that the majority of rock drummers can't touch.

Chambers is pretty sick...most rock drummers are ok. Moon is the sloppiest "with style" drummer I've heard. I think it was the drugs doing it :D

It really depends of style of music.. most Rock drumming is pretty boring really.

Jazz & funk that stuff gets me going on the kit... rock is just boom boom boom

But whaddaya gonna do when all you wanna do is rock out?

Yeah i think we're on the same page in terms of drummers, it was the Beatles thing that I didn't agree with - me going off on a tangent......

TRAVIS BARKER SUCKS. Everyone loves this guy... all he does is show off and make up beats for songs that don't even fit. He's a hog of the spotlight and deserves no credit because all he does is play overtop of his band.

I'll agree that he is not one of the best, but he is THE BEST part of Blink 182. Blink live are just awful. When I saw them, I thought to myself pretty sad the drummer is the best part.
