I think Dave Grohl is one of the most talented men in music today......
He's awesome at everything he does.
I think the allure of calling Dave Grohl a great drummer has more to do with how hard he hits the skins and the amazing production that he gets on his drum tracks. For example when the drums kick in on Teen Spirit, and the intro of Scentless apprentice are just amazing. However they are in large part amazing not for being overly complicated but for just sounding great. That being said don't think I'm slagging him by any means becasue he is great and watching him play drums on have a cigar a few years ago was awesome. Still probably the guy I pick for my all star band if I were to make one. Although the last two foo fighters cds have been sub par IMO

Well not exactly, there are plenty of great rock drummers whose styles don't bare any resemblance to Bonham. Not saying he wasn't great, but there seems to be an almost snobish attitude among some people (not that I'm accusing you) that there couldn't possibly be a better drummer, just because he's a legend. It's kind of like the whole thing with the Beatles - like there couldn't be a better band than the Beatles because they pioneered popular rock, which I personally think is horse shit.
I agree 100% with the Bonham part, but not with The Beatles. I think The Beatles and Elvis are far and away the greatest rock artists ever. There will never be another band/solo artist as big as they were and that did a whole lot for music.

I can agree that Bonham is certainly a drumming legend, and possibly the most important rock drummer, but he in no way shape or form is the best drummer skill wise, even though sadly, some Zep fans will disagree.
Yeah i can agree with you there, I guess I was looking at it more along the lines of 'best drummer'. I had a long drawn out argument with one person who claimed Jimmy Chamberlin wasn't that good a drummer, because there's only a handfull of songs that really stand out as extraordinary. My point was that not every song required him to show off, especially since a lot of the Pumkins' songs were lighter pop songs. It's easy for someone like Danny Carey to show off, becuase most Tool songs are easily 5 minutes long and are usually heavy enough to require balls out drumming. That doesn't necessarily make him a better drummer though.
The guy from Avenged Sevenfold is seriously impressive too. I know a lot of people don't like the band, but there is no denying they are really good musicians.
The thing with Carey is, that he can show off while still performing perfect for the song. I don't think many other drummers can pull off the stuff he does, yet being able to fit the song perfectly. That's probably a reason why i'm not a big Mike Portnoy fan, I just don't think he fits some of DT songs that well. I can't deny that he is insane on the kit though.
Jimmy Chamberlin's solo album shows off a lot of his skill. He is a VERY underated drummer, and a very talented one as well.

Both Danny and Billy regularly pull out 19/18 beats etc, without sounding like they are doing it for impressing. Danny is so unintrusive in a song you sometimes don't even realise how much he is blowing your mind.

True about Lateralus not being the same style. Opiate, Undertow, and Aenima have some offbeat stuff, but alotta straight time sigs, so early on he was very reminiscent of Bonzo before other key influences started playing a bigger role.
Fact of the matter is, I have never heard Danny Carey do anything that John Bohnam can't do, maybe the double bass madness, but Bonzo played with a single kicker.
