That was the song that got me into this band in the first place back in 1996 actually. It is such a lovely song.

Good question.
It's kind of difficult to describe their music...seeing they are a league of their own in so many ways. They get their influences from everywhere (a lil' country, some blues, alternative, some funk in there too)...I just usually refer to it as "Canadiana Rock".I'm sure other Hip fans here could describe their music better.
They will be touring Europe in July by the way...if you guys are in Europe that is."All the strength that you might think would disappear, resolving..."0 -

I once read a review of one of their albums (can't remember which one) where the writer called them "art rock". Since Gord Downie's lyrics are pretty much poetry set to rock n' roll, I guess that makes sense. Like Mariposa said, the Hip can do it all: hard rock, folk, blues, alternative, country, and everything in between. They can do a gentle acoustic ballad like "Bobcaygeon" one minute, and then they can crank up the volume and scare the shit out of you the next with songs like Fire in the Hole, The Wherewithal, and Tiger the Lion. It's great! If you want to get a good indication of what this band is like, you might wanna pick up their new double-disc greatest hits package, "Yer Favourites". If you're new to the band, it's probably the best place to start.
As for the studio albums, the ones widely considered to be the band's best are Day for Night, Fully Completely, Road Apples, Phantom Power, and Up to Here. Personally I think their latest album, 2004's In Between Evolution is the best thing they've done in years. It was recorded in Seattle with Adam Kasper (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age) and it's got that raw, edgy, live-off-the-floor sound to it that I just love. Here's a great review from Allmusic.com that sums up the album perfectly:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:6z120roal48x"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

I took your advice to heart and went for a listen.
The music is really good. However I think the singing is what through me off
last time. I liked Phantom power the best of the three albums you reccomended.
I don't know if this is an international thing, but in Rotterdam(Holland) we have a liberary for music. The next time I'll go there I'll borrow Phantom power and listen to it in full.
I'll keep you posted, I didn't like Alice in chains at first dew to the singing. And I like them now so I'll give it a go.
thanx« One man's glory is another man's hell.

Gord Downie's voice is an acquired taste. The first time I heard the Hip, his voice threw me off as well. It's very unique and a bit odd at first, but once you get used to it, you'll love it. He seems to get compared to Michael Stipe quite a bit, and I can certainly hear a slight resemblance in some songs. But overall, I'd say it's a pretty weak comparison. Gord definitely has his own thing going."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Thankx for your responce.
I'm by no means an expert, but I couldn't hear Micheal Stipe.
I'll try and let it grow on me would be cool to have yet another band from Canada. If I had to name a top 5 bandnames The tragically hip would deffently be in it.« One man's glory is another man's hell.

...an American who first discovered them back in 1994,,
I tell newbies Gord's vocals are similar to "Midnight Oil, his stage antics like "Joe Cocker" (aka crazed maniac) and their sound (generally) is a cross between "the Rolling Stones' and "Thin Lizzy"...
That otta give you a good picture....
I personally think the High Sierra 7/1/1995 bootleg (SBD) is the best thing they ever performed..
should have gotten the nod over the Detriot Colesium pick for "In between us" live CD..
Rolling Stne recently said their live show is on par with the buzz Springsteen created when he was touring in the 70s...
(i.e epic performnces that get little exposure in the media).."This here's a REQUEST!"

That's a great comparison! They really do have one of the best live shows on the planet, and it's a shame that they're so ignored in the U.S. People have no idea what they're missing."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. That's awesome, a library for just music!I don't think we have those here in Canada...well not yet anyway. The closest one that we have are just a couple of cd collections in our local library and that's it.
Gord's voice also threw me off back when I started listening to them actually. And now years later I think his voice is very unique and I simply love it.
It's great to know you and brhf9 are enjoying the music!brhf9 wrote:just got the compilation 'hipeponymous' and so far so good.

It's great isn't it?And it will get better, they're also quite legendary when you see them live in concert...especially with Gord!
