Amazing story, Mookie! Gord really is one of a kind. I had the pleasure of meeting him and chatting with him for a few mintues when he did a poetry reading at the National Library in Ottawa. He's such an awesome, down-to-earth guy. And very quiet too. Almost the complete opposite of the freak of nature that he becomes on stage. Speaking of live performances, I just bought my ticket for the Sasquatch Festival at the Gorge. Can't wait to hear the boys play some new material!

you're so right...soft spoken and kind - dare i say "normal"?!?!, and then he lets it out on stage...sort of like a man sort of down on his luck who takes to the streets shaking a banana at people, trying to convince them that it's making a sound...irreverant and ranting, and i love it!

very cool to get a chance to meet him, eh? was he reading from coke machine glow? what did you all talk about?

    far too kind mariposa! :)

    I try...:D
i think it was either mariposa or direwolf that told the story on that one...i think it is about a prison near kingston ontario...

they no longer play it...something due to gord's family and his brother getting letters and too much attention...can't recall...maybe someone could refresh my memory...

Is it just me or...is the Hip Museum down? Haha I think we use it a little too much here! Yay...direwolf found the link :)..too slow here.

Anyway...brhf9 that's the link and this is also from the Hip Base.

The rest is just him imagining what it would be like if a family member went to the big house and broke out and came home for dinner and then maybe out to a movie later. He said he then paired down the trivialities like the bit about the movie and wrote the song.

I either read or heard an interview with Gord Downie a couple of
years ago where he said that it was all fictional, and that it was
really embarrassing when the Hip toured Europe one time to have all
these people coming up to him and saying how sorry they were about

Yup, he was reading from CMG. In Violet Light had just been released, and the Hip were playing the Ottawa Bluesfest the very next night, so we chatted a bit about the album. I asked him what it was like recording in the Bahamas with Hugh Padgham, who of course is famous for producing Sychronicity and Ghost in the Machine by the Police. Gord mentioned how much Johnny enjoyed getting the "Stewart Copeland" sound on this drums.

By the way, I just found an mp3 of an unreleased song called "Fighter Fighter", which was recorded during the In Between Evolution sessions. Why it didn't make the album is beyond me, because it's a killer song. This version is taken from their 2004 gig at the Odeon in Cleveland. Enjoy!

Thank you both, I'm sure "Gord" would be proud off you.

I told Mookie that I could only share god thoughts.

Now I'm hoping that's not true.

I will share with you a little story.

A story about Ed. In my Pearl Jam collection I have a bootleg from a gig at Greatwoods 1998 on the 16 off September. It is near the end off the show when they play, Go. The song has finished, the feedback is still, uhm.. feeding back I guess when their is a weird, pliou...rickatickting to beheard.
    And then,.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Hey listen asshole; One more Fucker throws a fuckin' quarter out here, and we're out off here, I'm tellin' ya! Fucker! What the fuck! you're blowin' it for fuckin' everybody! Hit me with a fuckin' quarter again and fuck it, I'm out off here, or we're all out off here. Fuck you! And if anyone sees anyone throws fuckin' ...change right next to him, you have my promission to personaly beat the fuckin' holy shit shit out of him!!! Thank you very much.
    Fucking Idiot!
Aha that feld good, thank you.

Luckely for the crowed they don't walk off stage. Instead they start State of love and trust. During the song Eddie changes the lyrics around, and sings OHHH won't you save me from,....., (muffeld) someone over there.

I hope this ain't common knowledge, so that it might be a nice thank u.

Just checked my PM...thanks for sharing the story Karma. :):D Enjoy this thread.

Isn't it great? When I first joined this forum, I was amazed at how fast topics disappeared and new threads were started. This has to be one of the longest running threads I've seen here. Once the new album comes out and they start touring, I'm sure this thread will remain on the front page for a while. We gotta keep it going!

Yup. I own "You Forgot it in People" and it's a very solid album. Haven't picked up their new one yet. you should check 'em out if you haven't already. They're definitely unique. Music writers the world over are salivating over Canadian indie-rock right now and giving critical hand jobs to a number of bands here, and deservedly so. Arcade Fire, Metric, Feist, The New Pornographers, and basically anybody in or involved with Broken Social Scene are getting a lot of attention these days. It's pretty cool.

I just wish all this attention was a little more spread out to include bands like The Weakerthans, Sam Roberts, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, the Constantines, Joel Plaskett, Cuff the Duke, and dozens of other bands who in my opinion are just as good as the ones currently hogging the spotlight. Having been around for so long, I think The Tragically Hip also deserve more attention than they've gotten. All these music critics heaping praise on Canadian rock seem to have no idea that the Hip are basically the godfathers of the modern CanRock scene. Without a band like the Hip paving the way, there would be no Arcade Fire or Broken Social Scene. Sure, the Hip are in the Hall of Fame and everything, but they still haven't received the attention they so richly deserve in the U.S. and other parts of the world. But I guess that's the just the way things go. They'll forever be the unsung heroes, and there's a certain dignity in that which I find incredibly cool. Bottom line is that we have an insane amount of talent in this country, and the best part is that we're just getting warmed up!

I have gone to concerts for over 28 years and Sam Roberts was the first and only back up band I have ever seen (without knowing them already) that caused me to rush right out and buy the CD / album...

When he opened for the Hip in Boston last year, he literally WON the crowd over to a person...

By the end of his set, we were all totally fixated on his performance..
( rare occurence with a opening band)

Godamn does he have a great live show!

My favourite Hip album by far is Road Apples..
    Fully Completely comes close

the best time I ever had a Hip concert was at the "Road Side Attraction" concert in 1995 outside of High River alberta in a farmers' field with about 25 other bands.. it was 3 days of the best fun I have ever had.
I have only seen the Hip about 5 times... 3 x in calgary 2 x in Edmonton.

Sammy kicks ass! I've seen him live 4 times now, twice opening for the Hip and twice on his own. The dude definitely knows how to work a crowd, and his band absolutely ROCKS. His new album "Chemical City" comes out on April 11th, and I guarantee I'm gonna be the first one in the store that morning. I can't wait.

I know them, it wasn't a question to find out whether they were any good.
And you're right they're definitely unique. although I do feel a certain connetion between them and bands like; Godseed....., Do make say think and Explosins in the sky.
I allready had the album when I went to see them last year. Metric the band you referd to (I didn't know them at the time) was opening. During their show I thought how can The social scene top this. They will be out played by their own opener. But I couldn't have been more wrong. What talent, such skill. I put them right up there with Motorpsycho when it comes to live gigs.

Those guys are playing the Sasquatch Festival at the end of May along with the Hip, Ben Harper, Sam Roberts, and various other bands. I recently bought my tickets and I'll be heading down for the Saturday show along with a few friends. I'll definitely check out Architecture in Helsinki. (great band name by the way)

    very sombering...

Your smile is fading a bit so I ration it
    Don't think about it
    Here where the Mississippi quits
Where its still got a bit of Minnesota in it

No one will give you a thing these days
They'd rather kill it or throw it away
You don't 'do' dark American streets so
    If New Orleans is beat
If New Orleans is beat (New Orleans is beat)
If New Orleans is beat (New Orleans is beat)
If New Orleans is beat (New Orleans is beat)
If New Orleans is beat (New Orleans is beat)
Where's that leave you and me? (Where's that leave you and me)

The river takes takes takes and takes
It doesn't change and only changes
See it there in a picture with me
    There's a caption beneath
    "New Orleans is beat"
and if New Orleans is beat
    If New Orleans is beat
If New Orleans is beat (New Orleans is beat)
If New Orleans is beat (New Orleans is beat)
Where's that leave you and me?
