Since there were some comments recently slamming female singers, I thought I might stand up for teh sisters.
Heather Nova, heartmelting
Alison Krause, look in the dictionary under elegant and entrancing
Ellen Foley, caused a lot of adolescent jeans to catch fire in teh day
Amy Lee, love her or hate hger, she can sing
JAnis Joplin, whiskey, cigarettes and howling good fun
who wants to name some more ???

yeah I agree, I have to go w/my fellow Texan, Janis Joplin. Her voice makes me shiver everytime I hear a song of hers
Kim Deal. Listen to "Do You Love Me Now?" her voice is very beautiful especially in this song.
Tanya Donelley (from Belly, Throwing Muses): her voice is very angelic. She can range from high to low on such songs as "The Bees," & "Stay"
I almost forgot, Corin Tucker from Sleater-Kinney. some might love her or hate her voice, but I think she rocks.I like to call her 'lil Grace Slick' b/c of the way she sings.

How bout some Canadians? Amy Millan and Feist... check out their solo stuff, as well as Broken Social Scene and Stars (and any other million side projects they may or may not be involved in).
And if you like Norah Jonesy stuff, Carla Bruni is nice. I think she has a new album out.0 -
Ani Difranco - Simply the most passionate and talented woman I have ever witnessed. She's been out there putting out excellent music since 89 and even started her own record company, Righteous Babe Records. She has always held true to her beliefs and her fans. Her song writing skills are mind blowing and she can play the hell out of a guitar. She's also an activist and uses her exposure to stand up and speak out about the things she truly cares about. She's always out there touring and she treats the fans at her shows as if they were her own family to which she is honered to be playing for. I just can't say enough about this amazing woman. If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.

Don't know if she is crazy or not, but I HATE her voice. Totally ruined Fortunate Son and RITFW in Nashville 2003. I shall never forgive her."Strangers passing in the street, by chance two seperate glances meet, and I am you and what I see is me."0 -
If any of you listen to Folk you may know of Sandy Denning. Great voice.0

Neko Case Writes beutifiul songs and has a wonderful voice i think.
One of my favs from her newest album
"Hold On, Hold On"
The most tender place in my heart is for strangers
I know it's unkind but my own blood is much too dangerous
Hangin' round the ceiling half the time
Hangin' round the ceiling half the time
Compared to some I've been around
But I really tried so hard
That echo chorus lied to me with its
"Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on"
In the end I was the mean girl
Or somebody's in-between girl
Now it's the devil I love
And that's as funny as real love
I leave the party at three a.m.
Alone, thank God
With a valium from the bride
It's the devil I love
And that's as funny as real love
And that's as real as true love
That echo chorus lied to me with its
"Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on"
