I dug it. I agree with everyone who thinks it's gonna be a killer song live--especially some of Matt's drum work there in the middle. And I'm not sure where people are getting the K o L comparison...I saw them live last weekend, loved their show to death, and this song sounded NOTHING like them. This was definitely a PJ tune, can't wait to hear it this fall out here on the west coast!
Too bad that Ed's voice was shot. I was quite unimpressed when I first saw it, probably because of the bad sound and Ed struggling. After hearing it for the second time, I can say that it has a nice groove, very upbeat and modern sounding. I like it . I feel that this record it going to have a very buoyant sound to it.
Exactly, Stone was made for head bobbing. Play that song back for yourself right now. Tell me how the hell you can bob your head to that crap. Post punk is one thing... Talking Heads were post punk. It doesn't mean you can't have rhythm or a bit of funk in the sound, which is what made PJ so special... Stone kept just enough groove in the hard rock/punk to make the music fun. Vitalogy-Yield are my favorite albums because they exemplify that mixture (thanks Jack!). Now... now they sound like a sad bunch of middle aged men still trying to write Ramones songs... there's no more fun, no more beloved Stoney funk anymore. :(
Then do yourself a favor.. don't buy the new cd.
O yea.. im listening again.. im bobbing my head.

you know, i haven't been on the boards much for the last year or so. i think it's great that there's so much activity going on in anticipation of the new tour dates and record, but it's the same old stuff with so many people pissing and moaning at each other. i don't mind if someone doesn't like the new song/album or whatever, that's what message boards are all about (although i prefer the positivity). i just suppose it's a fact of life that there will always be people on here that feel the need to ridicule other people for their thoughts or opinions. that's too bad. i mean, pearl jam is my favorite band ever, but i don't need everyone to love everything they ever did.
say it with me people. it'll all be ok...
it'll all be ok...
really, who cares if someone says they like KOL better. or that they think the new song sucks. or that ed's lost it. or that matt's hair is too long/short/blonde/brown/orange. or that stone didn't wear his green shorts. it's ok to discuss all these things, but come on folks, must we insult one another? we're all friends here, right?
i'm going to go listen to the new song again now. and be happy about it.

What a bunch of negative, disgruntled bitches complaining about this song.
It's the first fucking time we are hearing it, the sound wasn't even good, and it still kicked ass. Stop jumping and assuming so god damn quick.
We know the band is going to be 20, and we know what they have done already... change to me is good. Stop acting like you thought we were going to get Vs part 2... because we are not. That era is over with. It doesn't have to be the same in order for it to be good. And I can't wait for "Backspacer".
1. It didn't kick ass. It was utterly boring and forgettable. The fact that they jumped and growled a lot doesn't make it kick ass.
2. Change is good. There is nothing new about that song. Same boring racing riffs they've been trying to make work (to no avail) since Binaural. Same awkward, rushed, word throaty spitting/growling from Ed (the guy that used to be able to belt out vocals from his gut and make the world pause to listen). There was nothing new about this song other than Matt's fancy drumming, which is not new, they just finally injected it into a new song from the get go rather than waiting to insert it live.
give it time folks.. i mean, that song had energy and was intense. Just think back to the Riot Act Dave letterman performance.. we waited two plus years for I Am Mine ? Granted we had Save You as well, but I agree, there is intense potential for the new album. Avocado was an appetizer, like guacomole dip (terrible analogy)...

I hope your right. Heels wear "fag blue" How bout them Terps. Born Ready...
I have no problems with the song. But Mainstream America will, just because this isn't what they're looking for anymore. Most of us, including myself, could give 2 shits less about Mainstream America.
I just hope PJ doesn't care very much either, but I feel like they want to get a little bigger than they are right now and I'm not sure they're releasing the right songs to do it.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Answer em this.. is a singer allowed to have an off night?
Absolutely. My problem is the fact that he does that sound on purpose. As I've mentioned before... see Comatose. This was the same style of vocal delivery... rapid fire word-spitting that equates to him basically mumbling and screeching. Even on a great night, that kind of song is going to sound bad. Ed's voice isn't made for that, it's made for singing. They used to be able to rock without having to just double the tempo of everything. See Leash and Animal, Last Exit, Hail Hail... all songs that rocked but still allowed Ed to SING and the band to play rather than just strum like a hamster with ADD on its wheel.
It doesn't take much to please me. I liked Army Reserve. WWS was one of the better rockers of recent years... again, it unfolded much slower, Ed mumbled, but there was still a musical rhythm to his singing, not spoken word at double speed. Just give the band some room to breathe. I feel like anymore I'm listening to a week early Green Day album.

I'll be listening to the new album with an open mind, but this doesn't bode well. This sounds exactly like what the band described as their goal in that Rolling Stone article which alarmed me at the time. Now this song... like I said, it seems like the band is purposely taking their sound in the exact direction that hasn't appealed to me over the last few albums. Plus tonight I found out the ex-gf I've been in love with for years and never got over is engaged to the guy she dumped me for. So overall, a rather disappointing evening... I've been abandoned by both my loves

I sort of agree with you after listening to it a few times. Im really fucking disapointed. It just sounds like some modern punk rock song that any band could have written. Other than Matts good drumming, I cant say Im a fan. I thought I liked it, but now im just like "meh". Jeffs bass playing sounded like a generic punk bass line played with a pick. At first I thought it would be cool that PJ is trying to sound more modern and write a song like that, but it doesnt fit. They are 40 something years old, it doesnt work. I hope the rest of the album isn't like that. I'm more impressed with Santa Cruz then that song. Atleast the leaked showbox song was awesome.
