i'd just like to point out that pearl jam has done two whole tours now....in 2007 and in 2008...for *no reason*...as in, just to gig, have live shows and sure...make some $$$.....as they did not put out an album with new material since 2006. just sayin'. a band of pearl jam's caliber, at this stage of their career, absolutely CAN choose to play on conan "just because".......just because...they can. and the publicity for conan, and conversely for pearl jam.....all win-win. that's PLENTY of reason. and again, after such a performance, conan can quite likely invite them back AGAIN...when they release the album in the fall.

yup
I would be very surprised if there was any release on June 2nd and I would be surprised if they release the album digitally prior to the physical copy
Doesnt really matter how Radiohead or NIN releases their material, I will note that Radiohead sells 3x more records than PJ and NIN approx 2x as many (in rainbows over 3 million units, the slip over 1.5 million units-while pearl jam sold approx 704,000). I still think PJ wants to release a hard copy. Both Radiohead and NIN have a much larger fanbase as far as buying studio material is concerned. Radiohead is arguably a "bigger" band than PJ

But you're comparing a standard release (Avocado) with a name your own price, and a free album. Pearl Jam has yet to explore the medium, so to sell 704,000 of avocado without the benefits of a viral buzz in this day and age, no number 1 cross over hit, was pretty successful. if PJ goes the route of digital download, who knows how many copies will be distributed.

there was a pretty good viral buzz for avocado (irving plaza, storytellers, and letterman) they promoted it more than any of the recent releases, but what you say is true, the unit count would be higher if the new PJ record is free or $5

This thread started as just kind of a conversation stirrer, and while an album may not be released on june 2, i do believe something will be, but people just fail to recognize the significance of a lot of factors based on past present and future especially in a situation where they hold this band so high up on a pedestal. Business is business.

i'll take pearl jam however i can get em, but truly.....i will lament the *loss* if they follow others, hop on that bandwagon and abandon their roots. pj was never this tech-savvy band and while i am thrilled they have this community and have embraced technology, i personally hope that the continue to follow their own way, and yes.....release hard copies of albums first, or simultaneously, with DLs. tis only my own, personal desire. obviously they are out to make $$$, of course, but i hope their main motivators, especially this far along....is following what they truly love about music, the ritual of it all, etc. we shall see......
since when was pj ever about unit counts? :?
yes, they want and need to make $$$.......but really, does 'unit counts' equate more $$$, always? obviously, an actual Cd cost more than a DL, with increased production costs to boot....but still.....i know they are a business, but i just hope they keep some of their purity to their music and the history of making albums, etc. eh whatever. as i said, i'll take em how i can get em, i just am not a fan of DLs first, something is lost in the process imo. it's sad to think that 10-20 years from now....many kids won't even know what an 'album' really looks like, the joys of buying one, opening it...HEARING it for the first time, an actual, physical copy........*sighs*
anyhooooooo....i still say the conan appearance, just for the fuck of it....IS reason enough, and we don't need DLs the next day to make the appearance *worthwhile*...........
oh and i too would wait for the hard copy. i am not buying a DL of a pj album.

Please, the amount of money we give PJ is astronomical as it is. What's another $5 from us?
I'd give them the $5 on the mere fact that they're changing with the times lol
oh and i too would wait for the hard copy. i am not buying a DL of a pj album.
Then if that was the case, why didn't they stop their music from being distributed via Itunes? It's there for more than just another way for a fan to access the songs.

Doesn't matter. It's the principle. I like cd's and art work and vinyl even more. I have the entire catalogue on vinyl. I'm not going to go along with a digital release.
And if they're changing with the times, why are X-mas singles still on vinyl with no option of a digital download?
I started many threads during past tours to bring back physical bootlegs on here and had a lot of support from other members and PJ listened and brought them back.
I'm just saying that there are more people out there than you think on here who are against digital downloads as a form of album release.

absofuckinglutely!
and in regards to itunes...pj having control over how they want their music distributed is EXACTLY what i am talking about - pj doing things their way, having control over their music, they way they want it. obviously, it's a balance between business and love.....i am one of the first to say pj is in it for the $$$....of course they are, duh! point is, how they go about it has always been their way, and i hope that continues.......

what if it was a free giveaway for fan club members like the slip? you wouldn't download it, but instead just wait solely for the hard copy?
what if it was free, and/or it was via a name your own price if at all, would you donate anything or just take it for free or neither and still wait for the hard copy.

I waited 5 years for the return of physical bootlegs. I think I'll manage an extra month or two for a cd to come out with liner notes, artwork, etc.

So no, I wouldn't partake in it.
Yea, but the physical bootlegs are of songs you've heard before plenty of times, sure different magic in the air, etc....you mean to tell me you won't want to hear the new songs until there is a physical copy of it available to you? even though when it's avail via digital download prior to hard copy release - you would NOT listen to the songs whether through name your own price or free download? I'm sorry, I'm calling bs.

like the slip? wtf is that?
it would be very difficult to not give a listen, especially for free.......but i would still more than likely wait. didn't they offer up some of the new album, to listen online only - a couple of songs - before it was released? i never listened. so perhaps it would'nt be that hard, haha. idk. guess it depends how long i must wait for the hard copy CD. point is, i want my FIRST LISTEN to be of an actual CD...on my stereo.....the album in it's entirety, with physical artwork in my hard to peruse while listening. the ritual. so yea.....i think i have the self-restraint to wait. i wouldn't be happy about it, but it is my preference. they can give me a free DL with the CD purchase if they want, fine....makes it easier to add to itunes, sure...but i want my CD. first.

You can call whatever, but I'll hear them on the radio because I'm sure WMMR will play the whole album when it comes out like they always do and I'll hear them at the shows I'm going to. And it will give me something to look forward to when it comes out.
I don't need instant gratification.
In 2003 with the bootleg process, ten club gave you a code to download the mp3s so you had something to listen to until the physical cd arrived. I still have like 12 emails with unopened mp3 download links (that I'm sure don't work anymore) that I never used. I just waited for the cds to come in the mail.

good for you, not for nothing, but the fact that you don't need instant gratification is a rarity in this world. wmmr will probably play it you're right haha. but in the world of the typical modern consumer it is all about instant gratification....clearly there are those that don't fit into the typical modern consumer, average joe, that marketing is used upon, so that's cool too.
In 2003, the mp3 downloads avail to hold you over were the abosolute shitties quality possible haha. they sounded like absolute crap - i too waited for the physical cd instead haha...man that quality was brutal!
oh, alrighty...i thought you were referencing something re pj. i had no idea, not really a nin fan...nor radiohead really.....so all that they have done with alternative releases basically outside of my radar.
i don't know how old you are - and not saying it soley has anything to do with it, as i know sian-of-the-dead is young yet still prefers CDs too as per my thread on this topic - but i think for many of us over 30, we are accustomed to waiting on music. many of us grew up pre-computers, pre-internet  hahahahaha....and are used to getting the buzz of new music thru the radio, and waiting, anticipating the album release....heading down to the record store   to buy it.......rushing home to give a listen. i know nowadays for many of younger ages, it's completely different. some people never see album art, some don't even hear full albums, just songs DLed from itunes......many want the music right NOW. sure, the sooner the better......but i want the ritual...i want the music to sound the BESt it can for the first listen...i want to get engrossed in the artwork, linernotes, etc.....i want the full experience. and for that, i can wait. i just hope pj will always continue to release CDs, as i hope all my fave bands do. sure, i DL music, buy some music online, etc......but not bands i truly love. i want the CD, i want the process...i want the full experience.

I'm smack in the middle at 26 years old. Grew up with computer, but not necessarily with the ipods...I still don't own an ipod, and don't like them to be honest. I'm with you on used to getting the buzz of music through radio, and waiting for an album release, however I also helped rip songs to mp3 late 1997 and uploaded them to Josh Wardell, who helped spread the word of what an mp3 is, as Yield was leaking, also turned into a very pivotal moment in computers and music.

sounds about right- I do think it will happen right before ACL
Then why bother with the Conan show June 1st? Ok, Pearl Jam is playing new songs, to promote an upcoming album 3 months away? You don't take such a high profile show to promote something that's not ready for the public within a reasonable amount of time.
Ok, so digital download available June 2nd while hard copy/expanded cd available in the fall.
Let's see.
It doesn't really seem unreasonable to play a few new songs on Conan, let the youtube/internet buzz spread the videos virally for a month or so, release a radio single during summer, and then finally release the record in the early fall after live recordings are circulating virally from the august shows. This doesn't seem unrealistic at all, and sounds like good marketing if they keep the momentum up until the release.

the original music pirate?
Yes, very few remember it haha.
Those were the days on our 28.8's on #pearljam transfering mp3 files, taking nearly 30 mins for a song!

momentum is VERY tough to keep going these days. If an album goes to number 1 and sells about 150K during its first week, it can dwindle to 50K the next, 25K the next, 10K the next, and so on...and just fade on out.

exactly.
besides which, there is ed solo in june......live pj in august in europe and then in SF......then ACL in early october..........there's plenty of 'space' in there to create buzz, excitement, momentum for a new album....release the new album amongst all that........
offering a DL of the new album the day after a conan appearance to me really doesn't make a lot of sense, but even if it did, and even if it did occur....doesn't mean it couldn't sink just as fast as an actual album too. it really doesn't make a difference there imo. i think conan is a 'just b/c we can' show.....to kick of a summer chock FULL of buzz and appearances.....album release in the fall......more buzz....more shows..........it's all good.
Comments
yea that was touched upon earlier regarding international distribution.
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow
yup

i'll take pearl jam however i can get em, but truly.....i will lament the *loss* if they follow others, hop on that bandwagon and abandon their roots. pj was never this tech-savvy band and while i am thrilled they have this community and have embraced technology, i personally hope that the continue to follow their own way, and yes.....release hard copies of albums first, or simultaneously, with DLs. tis only my own, personal desire. obviously they are out to make $$$, of course, but i hope their main motivators, especially this far along....is following what they truly love about music, the ritual of it all, etc. we shall see......
since when was pj ever about unit counts? :?
yes, they want and need to make $$$.......but really, does 'unit counts' equate more $$$, always? obviously, an actual Cd cost more than a DL, with increased production costs to boot....but still.....i know they are a business, but i just hope they keep some of their purity to their music and the history of making albums, etc. eh whatever. as i said, i'll take em how i can get em, i just am not a fan of DLs first, something is lost in the process imo. it's sad to think that 10-20 years from now....many kids won't even know what an 'album' really looks like, the joys of buying one, opening it...HEARING it for the first time, an actual, physical copy........*sighs*
anyhooooooo....i still say the conan appearance, just for the fuck of it....IS reason enough, and we don't need DLs the next day to make the appearance *worthwhile*...........
oh and i too would wait for the hard copy. i am not buying a DL of a pj album.

I did say illegal activity aside
Please, the amount of money we give PJ is astronomical as it is. What's another $5 from us?
I'd give them the $5 on the mere fact that they're changing with the times lol
Then if that was the case, why didn't they stop their music from being distributed via Itunes? It's there for more than just another way for a fan to access the songs.
Doesn't matter. It's the principle. I like cd's and art work and vinyl even more. I have the entire catalogue on vinyl. I'm not going to go along with a digital release.
And if they're changing with the times, why are X-mas singles still on vinyl with no option of a digital download?
I started many threads during past tours to bring back physical bootlegs on here and had a lot of support from other members and PJ listened and brought them back.
I'm just saying that there are more people out there than you think on here who are against digital downloads as a form of album release.

absofuckinglutely!
and in regards to itunes...pj having control over how they want their music distributed is EXACTLY what i am talking about - pj doing things their way, having control over their music, they way they want it. obviously, it's a balance between business and love.....i am one of the first to say pj is in it for the $$$....of course they are, duh! point is, how they go about it has always been their way, and i hope that continues.......

what if it was free, and/or it was via a name your own price if at all, would you donate anything or just take it for free or neither and still wait for the hard copy.

In 2003, the mp3 downloads avail to hold you over were the abosolute shitties quality possible haha. they sounded like absolute crap - i too waited for the physical cd instead haha...man that quality was brutal!
oh, alrighty...i thought you were referencing something re pj. i had no idea, not really a nin fan...nor radiohead really.....so all that they have done with alternative releases basically outside of my radar.
i don't know how old you are - and not saying it soley has anything to do with it, as i know sian-of-the-dead is young yet still prefers CDs too as per my thread on this topic - but i think for many of us over 30, we are accustomed to waiting on music. many of us grew up pre-computers, pre-internet

I'm smack in the middle at 26 years old. Grew up with computer, but not necessarily with the ipods...I still don't own an ipod, and don't like them to be honest. I'm with you on used to getting the buzz of music through radio, and waiting for an album release, however I also helped rip songs to mp3 late 1997 and uploaded them to Josh Wardell, who helped spread the word of what an mp3 is, as Yield was leaking, also turned into a very pivotal moment in computers and music.
converted me as I was never a really big fan
GREAT record
carry on
It doesn't really seem unreasonable to play a few new songs on Conan, let the youtube/internet buzz spread the videos virally for a month or so, release a radio single during summer, and then finally release the record in the early fall after live recordings are circulating virally from the august shows. This doesn't seem unrealistic at all, and sounds like good marketing if they keep the momentum up until the release.
