Doing Conan on June 1st is POINTLESS unless you're actually promoting something to be out rather quickly within the performance date...sure it's not pointless to the fans, but in the actuality of it, a band like Green Day (who's struggling with first week sales compared to American Idiot) should've tried for that spot on Conan.
They have sold 91,797 copies out of roughly 56% of retailers reporting (in the US)....they shipped out 650K cd's in anticipation of first week sales.
Just stating logistics here people.
Sounds like someone is trying to show what they learned in their music biz course at community college!

Have you ever read the book by Don Passman re: the music biz?...its a good read.
They are doing June 1 because that will be Conan's first show. If they were going to release the album on June 2, the marketing/promotion wheels would already have been cranking.
you don't need marketing/promotion wheels on a new album in this day and age whether for an album or a single.....radiohead/nine inch nails have been doing just fine...and dave matthews hasn't ever had a promotion for an album for who knows how long i can remember....not saying it doesn't exist, but if it does it's not reaching part of its target audience
but who knows...i'm still saying, something june 2nd.
Look a couple posts up - someone stated something which I agree with, that the public awareness is much greater for Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails than Pearl Jam. Even so, the delivery became the marketing - when Radiohead announced their "pay what you want" idea, it was big news, and it was brilliant, as it brought the publicity to them. Unfortunately, now that Nine Inch Nails have done the same thing, I don't think there would be close to the same amount of hype surrounding if Pearl Jam did it.
All you need in "this day and age" is some form of innovation. Innovation draws publicity.

I may have, lately been reading the making of the white album, and going to move onto slash's autobiography. I just know everytime I go to barnes and nobles I walk away with another book about music in some fashion. I'll look at a book, open a random page and read a few pages while there, barely noticing an author or title. I'll take a look when I get a chance as to whether I've read that one, if not I'll be sure to pick it up if in stock. Thanks.
Just because they are on Conan doesn't mean that the new release will soon follow.
Could just be something interesting to include in the Cameron Crowe documentary.

Pearl Jam usually releases a single at least a month before the album comes out don't They? They have no songle out so I think there is no chance the album comes out anytime soon. I hope I am wrong.

I guess. I still think it's a stretch and not a very convincing/plausible theory. But if you're right, I'll come back and happily eat crow. I just wouldn't put my money on your date!

Haha it's not even about that cause if I am right, we all win! But really in a business sense, you don't take arguably one of the highest late night TV shows EVER to promote....in a sense...nothing.

I definitely think them playing Conan is for promoting the album. I just think it s the beginning of a number of things they are going to do to promote the album. That said, they will do a lot of promoting before the album hits, which wont be in June or July IMO.

The Conan appearance being on a Monday does set it up nicely, seeing as 99% of all of every media is released on Tuesdays. I can see SOMETHING being released...I just can't see Conan introducing them as the band "whose latest album is due out SOMETIME SOON....PEARL JAM!". I guarantee you he/the producers will want a set date or month.

I don't think that's really what is happening though. As I said, PJ doesn't have the same kind of profile or presence in the public eye as Radiohead or NIN or even Wilco. PJ is kinda taken for granted. Even with no album release imminent, putting them on this show is a good thing for them, reminding people that they're out there and still alive and kicking. It whets the appetite. There's a new, decked out version of their classic debut for people to pick up, a few tour rumblings, and an album in the works. I can easily see this being little more than a "hey guys, we're still here!" kind of appearance with a more full scale PR press down the line once the album is closer.

I live in the NY Market and to be perfectly honest, none of these bands, PJ included have a very high profile. In fact, PJ is about the same as Radiohead, but definately larger than nine inch nails in this market (evident by the amount of area appearances/sold out shows from PJ over the years to the slow selling/non sold out NIN shows in the area)
So who really knows, but even if it is just for "hey we're still here" it's still better than Green Day playing 40 something year old punks without any musical growth, wearing their eye makeup, still going for that "image" of hating the "man" who is making them their money these days.
Considering the band just finished final mixing at the end of April, there's absolutely ZERO chance of the album being released next month. Trust Stone and Mike when they said the album would be released in the Fall,...

This thread is really interesting... nice discussion!!
My two cents... I don't see an album coming out before August/September, it's just too good to be true!
...but I'm happy anyway!
Pearl Jam is doing so much, 2009 has been such a great year, with Ten re-release, tour announcement and the new album... PLUS all the stuff in the middle, festivals and Conan and Eddie solo tour... they're ALIVE!!! (and well)
Thanks PJ... and let's hope for a new albume released ASAP

HAH I totally forgot about EV's solo tour as well. Wonder if he'll break out that "ballad" as touched upon in the other thread regarding someone hearing the "finished" album
sounds about right- I do think it will happen right before ACL
Then why bother with the Conan show June 1st? Ok, Pearl Jam is playing new songs, to promote an upcoming album 3 months away? You don't take such a high profile show to promote something that's not ready for the public within a reasonable amount of time.
.
because DMB is releasing their new album June 1st and playing a live complete concert on the FUSE network June 2nd...

Wouldn't it make more sense if they released a single before the entire record?
again - NIN and Radiohead broke down the door of "how it should work"
Yet you insist that they must follow the old rules of making sure the Conan appearance is used to push the imminent release of the new album, otherwise it's been a waste that makes no sense.

I havent read this thread so excuse me if this is old news but
Both Mike and Stone have said they "think" the album should be out in September. Plus, on the Red Mosquito board theres a post about a preview of one of the European posters, and the translation of one of the sentences on the poster says, "New Album this September."

(and well)
Thanks PJ... and let's hope for a new albume released ASAP
...is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?
HAH I totally forgot about EV's solo tour as well. Wonder if he'll break out that "ballad" as touched upon in the other thread regarding someone hearing the "finished" album
hopefully he meant for the physical copy... id like to see a surprise d/l pop up sometime soon on the site
PLEASE PJ

"Doo do do do doo do doo, Doo do do do doo do doo..."
again - NIN and Radiohead broke down the door of "how it should work"
Yet you insist that they must follow the old rules of making sure the Conan appearance is used to push the imminent release of the new album, otherwise it's been a waste that makes no sense.
I insist that it's not just an appearance for the hell of it.
Both Mike and Stone have said they "think" the album should be out in September. Plus, on the Red Mosquito board theres a post about a preview of one of the European posters, and the translation of one of the sentences on the poster says, "New Album this September."
Let me go now and try to get a link to that post.
