Doing Conan on June 1st is POINTLESS unless you're actually promoting something to be out rather quickly within the performance date...sure it's not pointless to the fans, but in the actuality of it, a band like Green Day (who's struggling with first week sales compared to American Idiot) should've tried for that spot on Conan.
They have sold 91,797 copies out of roughly 56% of retailers reporting (in the US)....they shipped out 650K cd's in anticipation of first week sales.
i don't understand why so many think playing conan on june 1st precludes instant album release. i think it's a great tease is all.........
All I hope for is that on Conan's premiere Will Ferrell comes out and plays dome damn cowbell.
Josh Homme can take it. Why can't PJ?
First I want Will to be on bass, and it'll take PJ a moment to realize it's not Jeff. I think they look similar. ...then Jeff can come from behind the stage like he was hit on the head by Will, but they'll let Will play cowbell instead.

Eh, not necessarily. Yeah, most bands only do talk shows to promote an album, but maybe because this is Conan's first one, the band is helping him out. Conan seems to be a pretty legit guy, so there could be a possibility that he and the band are friends (The White Stripes did play his last show on late night without an album (hell, Jack has two more recent albums with two bands other than the White Stripes.).

Kinda like how the band has delayed every single US tour until months after their albums got released, instead opting to tour Europe or Australia for a few months and THEN come to the US? That kind of not making promotional sense?

You are assuming that the album isnt done yet, and that the PJ members have been totally honest and all knowing about the album.
Im guessing that the album is mostly done, more done than the members let on, and also, that they either have no idea when its released, (not likely) or they are trying to build anticipation.
The last album was "supposed" to be released in august, I believe, and it got pushed up to May.
They do this to avoid the album being leaked, and to get everyone into a frenzy.
If they say, "Oh September" then people will realize there is a "long time" before the album is released, and wont email so many questions.
If they said July, people would be freaking out cause we dont know the name of the album, tracklisting, etc.
Fan club members, and people on this board are most likely to buy the album anyway, so it doesnt matter WHEN they release it for them. HOwever, the casual fan really doesnt pay attention too much to "release dates", then just see it in the store and buy it, or in iTunes. I am still saying this album gets released earlier than they are saying. End of June/July.

That's entirely possible -- but clearly the 2006 album/tour represented a shift in them actively courting attention about new material, so I don't think the 1991-2003 M.O. applies.
I'm not saying they accepted Conan because they knew they'd have a single/album out by then, but that now that they have, it makes sense to do so if possible. And prior to the tour, as well.

And with RA the tour started in Japan and Australia, b/c it was released in November. PJ hasn't play a NA winter for awhile.
So I know most people are posting that there is either a big relevance to picking June 1st in regards to promoting the new album, and the other half of the crowd is saying nothing of the sort...
However I would like to point out that it is Conan's first night hosting the tonight show... isn't that special enough? If they have other news for us awesome, if not they still get to kick off his career on the tonight show.
i don't understand why so many think playing conan on june 1st precludes instant album release. i think it's a great tease is all.........
Because on a logistical and marketing standpoint, it's pointless.
how about just because it would be fun? how about they are doing it because they have never played the tonight show (I dont think) and they like Conan? how about that playing the first night of the "new" tonight show is kinda cool just in itself? they will play a song, folks will rip it and distribute it and build a buzz for the official release and tour dates
logistically, you and I really dont know whats involved-but hey Id watch out for a show in LA around that time
from a marketing standpoint? since when has that been the only reason PJ makes decision?
I believe the latest news was from Mike, who stated that the mixed copies have been given to the band members to review.
I doubt that will take very long to figure out. I'm sure they will say, "Brendan, which one is your favorite? OK, go with that one. Call the Album "Tomato" and lets go."
I think most of that has already boeen done anyway, and I think Mike knows more than he lets on. They all do. They have to let UMG do the OFFICIAL release of news.
These guys have been telling stories for years, so no offense PJ, but I dont believe you guys.
Ed, remember when you said you were going to come back to Alpine Valley next year for sure? That was 2003. Next year hasnt happened yet. Its been 6 years. So take what the band members say with a grain of salt.
