I recently watched the 5 films in the box set Yakuza Papers: Battles Without Honor & Humanity. They were directed by Kinji Fukasaku and came out in 1973 and 1974. The films are as follows:

    Battles Without Honor & Humanity
    Deadly Fight In Hiroshima
    Proxy War
    Police Tactics
    Final Episode

The series has been likened to Japan's counterpart to the Godfather saga. Beginning just after World War II in Hiroshima, we see protagonist Shozo Hirono (Bunta Sugawara) and other young men come together to form yakuza organizations. While Hirono is the protagonist of the series (which goes from the mid-40s until the early 70s), it would be a misnomer to call him a hero. If he has more "honor & humanity" than many of the other characters we meet along the way, it is only a matter of degree. Fukasaku and his collaborators do a great job throughout of fleshing out a large number of characters. In fact, there are times when we don't see Hirono for a long time because he is serving a prison term. Other notable players in the saga include Sonny Chiba, Reiko Ike, Nobuo Kaneko, Jo Shishido, and Akira Kobayashi. With compelling characters, intricate maneuvering, sociopolitical undertones, and plenty of action, this epic gangster saga gets my highest recommendation.

Check out a feature on Fukasaku at the following link.

    The Stoning of Soraya M.
This movie was amazing. It stirred a lot of emotion. It had me thinking the entire time how some people can be lucky where they were born, and others not so much. It was sad and sickening but very powerful.

Saw these for my film class last week (had make up work to do):
    Birth of a Nation
    Metropolis
    The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
    Stagecoach
    Unforgiven

Watched "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" over the weekend. It was sitting on the DVR for a few weeks and finally watched it. Really liked this one.

I really want to see "Hugo".

    I don't know. That's really lame.

apparently when there are only 2 nominees it means there was only 1 outstanding song and they just added a 2nd song to keep it company. the 2nd song really isnt in contention. and all the other songs from all the other movies were shite. 8-)

Might check out Project X tomorrow.

The new Prometheus trailer is doing all sorts of funny things to me this morning, I love the Alien series and this is shaping up to be a great starting point to it all...if Ridley Scott pulls this off I may even be happy with him going back to Blade Runner territory too.

In other news...I really enjoyed Super, sort of like a cross between Kick Ass and Taxi Driver. Doesn't hold back on the crazy and is pretty funny too. Caught the second half of Fast Five and it was way beyond some of the other efforts in the series, had a real 80s action vibe to it and so over the top I was inthrallled.

I really liked John Carter. Saw 21 Jump Street today and wasn't expecting much but I really enjoyed that too. There's also a HUGE cameo for those who don't know already. And the cameo really delivered.

I saw John Carter yesterday. It was OK.
It was fun, the plot points were there, but lacking. I guess all you can expect for a 200 million dollar movie is action and glitz.

saw Game Change this weekend. heard the book was good and that the movie did it justice.

the general emotion i felt throughout the movie was...anger. anger that this woman was that close to the vice presidency.

I am definitely excited for Prometheus. From what I've seen in the trailers, Ridley Scott is doing some amazing things with this movie. The cast for the movie seems great too..Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Fassbender, Guy Pearce! Should be great!
