Eagles in position for No. 2 seed after Vikes' loss Listen to this article. Powered by Odiogo.com

In what can only be described as one of the most wildly entertaining games of the season, the Bears handed the Vikings a 36-30 overtime loss Monday night at Soldier Field.

What does this mean for the Eagles?

With a win over the Cowboys next weekend, the Birds will be the No. 2 seed in the NFC, meaning a first-round bye and a game at the Linc in the divisional round. The Eagles now control their own fate.

After starting the season 10-1, the Vikings (11-4) have lost three of their last four. If the Eagles and Vikings win next weekend, both teams would finish 12-4, and the Birds own the tiebreaker. If the Eagles win and the Vikings lose, well, obviously the Birds would have the edge for the No. 2 seed.

The Vikings' loss also means that the Saints have clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

As if Sunday's matchup in Dallas weren't already big enough, the stakes just got a little bit higher. As you'll see at the bottom, the Cowboys still have a shot at the No. 2 seed too.

There are now three different scenarios for the Eagles on wild-card weekend:

    * The Eagles could have a bye as the No. 2 seed.
    * The Eagles could travel to Dallas to face the Cowboys as the No. 5 or No. 6 seed.
    * The Eagles could travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings as the No. 5 or No. 6 seed.

    Here's an updated look:

How can the Eagles get the No. 2 seed?

A win in Dallas against the Cowboys. That's it.

How can the Eagles drop to the No. 5 seed and play the Cowboys?

If the Vikings beat the Giants AND the Cowboys beat the Eagles AND the Cardinals beat the Packers, the Birds would travel to Dallas in the first round as the No. 5 seed.

How can the Eagles drop to the No. 6 seed and play the Cowboys?

If the Vikings beat the Giants AND the Cowboys beat the Eagles AND the Packers beat the Cardinals, Dallas is the No. 3 seed and hosts the Birds in the wild-card round.

How can the Eagles drop to the No. 5 seed and play the Vikings?

If the Vikings lose to the Giants AND the Cowboys beat the Eagles AND the Cardinals beat the Packers, Arizona earns the No. 2 seed, and the Birds travel to Minnesota in the wild-card round.

How can the Eagles drop to the No. 6 seed and play the Vikings?

If the Vikings lose to the Giants AND the Cowboys beat the Eagles AND the Packers beat the Cardinals, Dallas earns the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. The Eagles would then travel to Minnesota in the wild-card round.

Jesus Christ that makes my head hurt.

Thanks for posting though. I don't care who we play, just glad to be in.

nice tidbit about donny mac from bowen today:

    Daily News Sports Columnist

December 29, 2009 Les Bowen: Further Review: Pressure doesn't get to McNabb
    By Les Bowen
    Philadelphia Daily News

    Daily News Sports Columnist

I WAS GEARING UP to be extremely critical of Donovan McNabb Sunday, as the second-half three-and-out series piled up and a blowout win teetered on the brink of becoming a bizarre loss.

McNabb, after displaying perfect vision and touch the first half, suddenly started spraying the ball all over the Lincoln Financial Field turf. After adroitly mixing and matching Brent Celek, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant and his other weapons, McNabb seemed to only see Jackson when the game tightened, Jackson working against one of the all-time greats, Champ Bailey. Obviously, the confused offensive line, after Jamaal Jackson went down and the Broncos started bringing more pressure, didn't help. The run game disappeared.

Then, on third-and-25 from his 15, receivers covered, under 5 minutes left and the score tied, McNabb took off. It looked crazy. This was the 2009 McNabb, battle-scarred 33-year-old father of four, not the kid from Syracuse whose feet were more reliable than his arm. But on he scooted, 27 yards, to a point just in front of the sticks on the Eagles' sideline, and the Birds had a first down after going three-and-out four times in a row.

"All that I focused on was the yard marker," McNabb said. "When I got out [of the pocket], I knew somebody was behind me, but I got the knees up and tried to get as much as I could."

The Eagles ended up punting on fourth-and-1 from Denver's 49, but as Andy Reid noted afterward, they'd finally switched around the field position. And when their defense held, and Jeremy Maclin cradled that huge 27-yard catch, the Eagles were set up to win.

McNabb wasn't doing this kind of thing for a few years there, most notably in the doldrums of 2008, when he ended up getting benched briefly. Any quarterback can go cold, any offense can have four bad series. This time - and really, several times this season - McNabb pulled himself and the team back together. That run showed both great confidence and determination. A fragile guy who can't handle pressure doesn't take off on third-and-25 and gain 27 yards. A fragile guy who can't handle pressure doesn't hit Maclin - it was a really good, back-shoulder throw, against solid coverage from Andre Goodman - with the game on the line.

Yes, McNabb could have been a lot more consistent, could have sensed pressure a little better on a few of those sacks. These days, though, you get the feeling that even when he's down, he isn't out.

There has been terrible, terrible call is in most games I've seen this year. Dallas suffered from horrible calls against San Deigo, Green Bay and others that changed the game, but I'm not crying about it trying to make excuses like you. Your team didn't make the plays to win and overcome the bad refs, my team did just that. If the bad ball spots would have been in the 1st, you'd still be trying to make excuses and forgetting the bad calls you benefitted from until you watched the game again. Your fandom blinds you. I'm living and dying with the Cowboys, but can still see everything thats going on for what it is.

Horribly awkward. It's his speech compared to the biker gang in Pee Wee's Big Adventure. I say we stomp em, then we shoot em, AND THEN WE KILL EM.

Six Eagles named to Pro Bowl; Brown not one of them
Six Eagles were named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster tonight, but cornerback Sheldon Brown was not one of them.

"It will kind of mess with you, but it's something you can't control," Brown said after being passed over despite having a career-high five interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. Brown also returned a fumble for a touchdown earlier this month against the New York Giants.

The six players selected to represent the Eagles in the Jan. 31 game in Miami were cornerback Asante Samuel, offensive tackle Jason Peters, wide receiver DeSean Jackson, defensive end Trent Cole, kicker David Akers and fullback Leonard Weaver.

Brown said he was named a second alternate to the NFC roster. The Eagles also had four other alternates: tight end Brent Celek, quarterback Donovan McNabb, guard Todd Herremans and defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley. Brown said this wasn't the first time he felt he deserved to be on the Pro Bowl roster.

"I've had a lot of good seasons," he said. "The year we had three defensive backs go (Brian Dawkins, Lito Sheppard and Michael Lewis) and I arguably had the best season, according to (Bill) Belichick. I always felt like the all-pro honor carries more weight because there is no fan voting there."

Samuel, who is tied for the NFL lead with nine interceptions, will be making his third straight Pro Bowl appearance and second with the Eagles. Peters, in his first season with the Eagles, will also be making his third straight Pro Bowl appearance.

Jackson, in just his second season, was voted to the Pro Bowl for the first time and made the NFC roster as both a wide receiver and a punt returner. He leads the NFL with a 16-yard average on punt returns.

Cole, whose 12 1/2 sacks rank fifth in the NFL, will be making his second Pro Bowl appearance, but the last time he went in 2008 he was added as an alternate.

Akers, who leads all NFL kicks with 32 field goals and 139 points, will be making his fourth Pro Bowl appearance, but his first since 2005, the year the Eagles went to the Super Bowl.

Weaver, meanwhile, is making his first Pro Bowl appearance in his fifth NFL season.

i hear ya on peters. it still is nice to see our team get so much recognition though. 4 starters is pretty damn good. with the super bowl players not playing, i'd bet we get at least 3 more on the squad. matt mosely's take on the nfc east pro bowlers:
    http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/tag/_ ... ro-bowlers
Perfect sense: I'm glad that the voters rewarded DeSean Jackson for a huge season. He's the first player in Pro Bowl history to be elected as a kick returner and wide receiver in the same season. Pretty remarkable stuff. Obviously, Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware needed to be the starter. His numbers might be a little down, but he's still the most dynamic pass-rusher in the league and coaches and players realize that. It's also hard to argue with Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel as a starter. He's once again putting up huge numbers in terms of interceptions and quarterbacks always have to account for him. It's great that Eagles defensive end Trent Cole and Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo made the team. Cole's one of the most underappreciated players in the league. And I'm really glad the players and coaches recognized Orakpo's excellent rookie season. Both of those players are reserves. I also don't have any problem with Eagles fullback Leonard Weaver being named a starter. I'm sure some Vikings fans are upset with that pick, but Weaver's put up excellent numbers both catching and running the ball. I think David Akers totally deserves to go for the Eagles. He had an excellent season and he continues to be a clutch kicker.

Made it on rep: Cowboys center Andre Gurode should not be starting in the Pro Bowl, and I think he'd even tell you that. This has not been one of his better seasons, so this was totally based on reputation. I think players and coaches get the offensive linemen wrong more than any other unit on the field. I also think Cowboys right guard Leonard Davis made it as a reserve based on reputation, and the same thing goes for Eagles left tackle Jason Peters. I think Giants center Shaun O'Hara's a good player, but there's no way he deserves a spot on the Pro Bowl roster over Chris Snee. I'm hoping I missed something because Snee deserves the spot on the team over O'Hara.

Got robbed: Shame on the fans for not putting Cowboys nose tackle Jay Ratliff higher on their list. The last time I checked, he wasn't even in the top five in the fan voting. The coaches and the players made sure he at least made it as a reserve. I understand putting Kevin Williams as a starter, but give me a break on Darnell Dockett. I think that's ridiculous. For the Eagles, I think cornerback Sheldon Brown and tight end Brent Celek should have been on the team. They're both alternates, but that doesn't cut it. Brown has played through injuries and been excellent this season. Celek simply had to overcome too many big names. Vernon Davis had an excellent season for the 49ers and Witten finished strong for the Cowboys. I could make an argument that Celek should've made it in front of Witten. Just look at the huge discrepancy in touchdowns. And I would've put Donovan McNabb or Tony Romo in front of Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. Rodgers put up a lot of empty numbers in the first half of the season and he takes entirely too many sacks. That's a bad choice by the coaches and players. Romo and McNabb were at their best in December. I also hoped that coaches and player would right a longtime wrong and put London Fletcher in the Pro Bowl. It didn't happen. I guess the guy will never get voted in. That's too bad. He had an excellent season. Same goes for Andre Carter. He had 134 tackles, which was second in the league. One more guy that was robbed: Giants wide receiver Steve Smith. He should have at least been a reserve.

good article from brookover this morning about how evenly matched we are. he makes a good point about dallas being a top 5 defensive team, but we scored 30 on denver who is also a top 5'er.

the more i think about, i think this game will come down to two things that we have the advantage in: turnovers and our pro bowl kicker verses....shaun suisham :lol: . our d has 17 more takeaways than their defense and we only forced 1 in that last game. this is what our d does best. i think we need a minimum of 2 for us to win. thankfully, romo will be behind center for them.:mrgreen:

Eagles Notes: Eagles, Cowboys closely matched

    By Bob Brookover

    Inquirer Staff Writer

Andy Reid looked and sounded like a man sitting at a World Series of Poker table.

His answers were short, less revealing than usual - that's saying something for him, too - and often accompanied by a smile that could be perceived as nervous or confident, depending upon who was doing the interpretation.

The Eagles' head coach knows the enormous stakes when his team plays the Cowboys on Sunday inside the new mega-palace of Dallas owner Jerry Jones. Reid dislikes hype with the same amount of fervor as he loves cheeseburgers.

But this game is the NFL's marquee matchup of the final week of the season, and if the Eagles can win it, they get the luxury of a bye week as the second seed and a home game in the second round of the playoffs, not to mention their sixth NFC East title in nine years.

Four No. 2 seeds - New England (2001, 2004), Tampa Bay (2002) and Pittsburgh (2008) - have won the Super Bowl in this decade, which is more than any of the other seeds.

"That's what is going to make this a great game," Reid said. "Both teams have something at stake. That's why we do this thing as coaches and players, for opportunities like this. Everybody will be fired up for it."

After Reid's news conference Monday at the NovaCare Complex, he met with a small group of reporters in a hallway, and his answers about the Cowboys remained short. During the Eagles' six-game winning streak, the coach has made a habit of entertaining extra questions in that hallway, but he had done so quite comfortably.

Things were different this week. Reid knows that the Cowboys are good.

"I think they're playing on a high level on defense," Reid said. "They're coming off a shutout. Offensively, their pass game is even more efficient than what it was before. They're running the ball well, and . . . they're doing a nice job with special teams by keeping people in bad field position."

If you carefully examine the Eagles and Cowboys, you'll find that they are two of the most evenly matched teams in the NFL.

The Eagles are ranked third in points scored with 429; The Cowboys are third in points allowed with 250. The Eagles have outscored their opponents by 116 points. The Cowboys have outscored their opponents by 87. The Eagles are 4-3 against teams with winning records. The Cowboys are 3-5.

The Eagles' Donovan McNabb, who missed two games earlier in the season with fractured ribs, averages 256 passing yards and 1.7 touchdowns per game. His passer rating is 94.5. Dallas' Tony Romo averages 278 passing yards per game and 1.6 touchdowns. His passer rating is 97.0.

DeSean Jackson is the Eagles' top receiver with 60 catches for 1,120 yards and 9 touchdowns. Miles Austin leads the Cowboys' receiving corps with 74 catches for 1,230 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Neither was particularly explosive in the first meeting between the teams.

Jackson was held to just two catches for 29 yards when Dallas held on for a 20-16 victory at Lincoln Financial Field. Austin had just one catch, but it was a 49-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter that broke a 13-13 tie.

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has 88 catches for 954 yards and one touchdown. Eagles tight end Brent Celek has 69 catches for 875 yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively, the Cowboys have 32 sacks, including 11 by roving outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware. The Eagles have 37 sacks, including 12½ by defensive end Trent Cole.

If the Eagles have a vast advantage, it's in the turnover department. They are tied for second with 37 takeaways and second overall with a plus-15 turnover differential. The Cowboys have just 20 takeaways and are tied for 14th with a plus-2 turnover differential.

The last time the teams met, however, the Eagles managed just one interception and couldn't capitalize for a score. The Cowboys intercepted McNabb twice and cashed in for 10 points.

The turnover department could likely be the deciding factor again.

Extra points. The Eagles promoted Dallas Reynolds from the practice squad yesterday after placing Jamaal Jackson on injured reserve. Reynolds, 6-foot-4 and 314 pounds, had been listed as a guard on the practice squad, but the Eagles listed him as a center after he signed yesterday. The undrafted rookie played all five offensive-line positions at Brigham Young, including center his senior season. . . . Safety Brandon Harrison replaced Reynolds on the practice squad. He was with the Eagles during training camp. The Eagles added an offensive lineman to the practice squad Monday when they brought back Episcopal Academy's Greg Isdaner. He replaced safety Reshard Langford, who signed with Kansas City.

Yeah, well we can count on at least one dumb decision by McNabb, about 5 passes that skip off the turf, and more bad clock management by Reid. So it evens out.

that's why the play the game my friend...mcnabb makes less mistakes than romo does and your coach has never won a playoff game in a long career. so i will give the birds the advantage in both of those categories.
