Damn Jeags...I never thought I would agree with you, but alas, here we are. I feel the same way, it's like everyone believes just because Pres. Obama is in the White House, all our troubles are over. Like the email I received the other day telling me what a wonderful amazing person he is because he wrote a letter to his children telling them all the best things that he wants for his children...like no other father has ever wanted that for their children.....people acted like "OMG...he is the first person ever to want nothing but the best for their children....OMG he's amazing......" I mean c'mon, yes he is a great public speaker and he has a huge following of actors, actresses, Hollywood types and millions of people who were looking for anything anti-GOP they could get their hands on following and backing him, but this is the Presidency of the US......like someone else said, let's let him govern for a day or two before we anoint him the greatest President in the history of the US.
  • YES, Christian americans are the only ones to utter the phrase 'god bless america' :D when I was a kid and said my prayers before going to bed it was 'god bless mammy, god bless daddy, god bless my sister and brother, god bless *insert aunt/uncle name here* and I named EVERYONE I knew :D but never did I say 'and god... please bless Ireland' :D that's just retarded... and I'm about as patriotic as you can get... and I was brought up religious so I know to ask god to bless an entire COUNTRY is just stupid. It certainly IS a patriotic thing. Here we have a few Americans listening to people from outside telling them what THEY feel are ignorant statements and being told they're wrong.

Such irony. WE are ignorant... yet your first sentence is to claim that you know for a fact Christian Americans are the only ones to utter that phrase. You're wrong. It's said by many who are not religious. that phrase has become secular, just like the whole Santa Clause-Christmas thing.

You're entitled to say it's in poor taste or arrogant or whatever, but there is nothing ignorant about it. And I won't say you're wrong, but I will say you're overreacting. It's a meaningless, harmless phrase with as much religion meaning as "God bless you" after someone sneezes.
that was a joke... what i meant was... you won't find someone in Bratislava going 'god bless america' I thought it was pretty simple... but maybe I should have made it simpler?
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!

Yep, but they don't say it in Bratislava ;) besides, as hated as God save the queen is pretty much everywhere, I get the impression it's not much liked in England either  and they certainly don't go around SAYING it

Why do people say things like "fiddle sticks"? There's no rhyme, reason, or logic to cultural idioms. If you dissect any given folk saying or phrase, they're all going to sound odd or illogical.

What the hell does Bratislava have to do with anything? Where did anyone here claim they say 'God bless America' outside America?

The point being, popular or not (and I'm guessing it's unpopularity is a recent generational development), it is simply a saying, a cultural idiom. It's not a true religious expression, even if it was derived from one. Thus, god bless America/the Queen does not literally mean the omniscient God or Jesus should bless the queen or american and nothing or no one else. It simply means "boy this place is great, best of luck to us all!"

But I suspect you and dunk and the rest all know this and are simply clinging purposefully to this for the sake begging an argument.

I don't buy that. It's become trite, but not meaningless. I don't see any other way to read it than as a statement that America is more important to "God" than other countries are. God Bless America, and any other country is an afterthought. It's really silly.

I find myself agreeing with, I think, all of dunkman's posts. Patriotism should not be a slogan, but a way of life. What it means to me is basically helping out your neighbor and anyone you find that needs a helping hand, building community, and making sure no one ever gets royally fucked over. America used to be good at these things.

Here's an example of the lack of patriotism I find around me. When I park my car and walk a 1/2 mile to where I work (better than paying $11 to park near my building), there is a long stretch of road on which there are no buildings on either side of me. It's clear that I'm walking towards the end of this road, and despite the fact that many cars drive past me, and the temperature has been below the freezing point lately with crazy wind chills, no one ever stops to ask if I need a ride, even just to the end of the road. Maybe it's just because it's Boston. I have a feeling that if I were in the south or midwest, I'd get a ride nearly every day. At least I'm not in NYC, where the cars would probably beep at me to get out of the road even though there's several inches of snow on each side of the road. My point is patriotism is what you do for others not what you say.

    no, it isn't...not at all.

in regards to christian americans, ARE only christian americans the only people to utter that phrase? i live here and i don't even know that. beyond that, i can say my mother - a catholic - certainly does NOT exclude other people of the world from her blessing. it's just a patriotic thing. sheesh. seriously, you are taking something personally that isn't meant for you, isn't personal.

when i say 'bless you' to someone when they sneeze, by default does NOT mean i don't want anyone else blessed.
YES, Christian americans are the only ones to utter the phrase 'god bless america' :D when I was a kid and said my prayers before going to bed it was 'god bless mammy, god bless daddy, god bless my sister and brother, god bless *insert aunt/uncle name here* and I named EVERYONE I knew :D but never did I say 'and god... please bless Ireland' :D that's just retarded... and I'm about as patriotic as you can get... and I was brought up religious so I know to ask god to bless an entire COUNTRY is just stupid. really?
you know for a fact jewish americans or muslim americans, or whomever else who might be of a religious nature in the USA don't ever utter the sentiment god bless america? interesting. and i clearly did state is IS meant as a patriotic statement. i've never prayed for god to bless america, and the only time i've said it was when singing 'god bless america' as a child. point is, politicans use the phrase more than anyone, period. it's a rah-rah, yay amaerica thing. it irks me, mostly for the link of religion with government...otherwise i couldn't care less about it. just like, overall, i couldn't care what most people's personal religious beliefs are, or their preferences in general. it's all good. btw - i never told anyone they're wrong...just that i disagree...and as an american myself, i can at least speak to my own sentiments, and those americans i know personally. that's all.

and kenny.....i don't think that is patriotism at all, that's just basic decency. and hell yes in NY you'd get beeped at, get the fuck outta the way! besides, i've always thought, said and believed...keep your god outta my governemnt, but the rest of the country just doesn't seem to agree with me. :)

btw - i always say 'bless you' when someone sneezes, just toal habit and seems polite....and no, i am not religious. :) i don't say 'god bless you''...so i fugre it makes it a more secular saying. :P

replace 'irks' with 'bores' and its exactly what i've been saying... but yet you seem to think its ok to post and post and post and yet I cant offer my opinion? :?

although it mostly bores/irks me for the 'we are better than you' aspect rather than the god in government thing. ... but otherwise i couldnt care less about it.

inaugurations are a big deal, always are...probably always will be. this one, in particular, is even more historic for obvious reasons....and hell yea, after 8 years of bush...collectively as a country, i think most are ready to celebrate! i don't think the media is making it any bigger than it is.

overall, i couldn't care what most people's personal religious beliefs are, or their preferences in general. it's all good. btw - i never told anyone they're wrong...just that i disagree

So if you met a Nazi who voiced his hatred of black people and Jews, or a Zionist who said that he wished all Palestinians should be wiped out, then that's 'all good' as far as you're concerned? And if someone that you know was involved in a hit-and-run and killed someone you wouldn't tell them that they were wrong, but you'd simply 'disagree'?

I'm not quite sure that I understand your point. What exactly are you trying to say?

yeah that confuses me also... surely the nature of diasgreeing with someone means you think you are 'right' about something and conversely they are 'wrong'... it doesnt have to be stated as 'you're wrong' but its explicitly implied...

me: he decides2dream, that TV show is on at 9pm
d2d: its actually on at 8pm
me: are you sure i remember it being 9pm, i could be wrong though?
d2d: look you're not wrong, i just disagree with you. Its on at 9pm.. i have the listings in front of me.
me: :? so i was wrong?
d2d: nope, i just disagreed with you.

I'd have to say that a bunch of this is factually wrong. Yes, a small number of Americans have passports, mostly because they can travel within the US and formerly Canada and Mexico without one and experience a great deal of things. The fear argument is somewhat correct but that is true of most travelers nowadays, they are cautious of their surroundings and where they go. But the statement that the education system on teaches ONE foreign language is absurd. I had the choice of 4 languages in HS and took 3 of them (none Spanish) and I know for a fact that most schools offer French, German, and Spanish along with other languages. Yes, Americans can become more culturally rounded but they also have to opportunity to expand their understanding of cultures right here in the US because of the multitude of culturally diverse areas in the US.

this is the same for a lot of countries though... its not a US phenomenon... which i'm not implying you are suggesting.. just pointing out that areas of France, Italy, UK and Spain are very multicultural in their diversity. :)

my point on the thread has been made many times over.

as to your question, you are taking it to extremes. please notice the very first word in what you quoted - OVERALL - meaning, generally speaking, not talking about every person, every interest, and so on.

having different opinions is all well and good, that is my point. talking within the parameters of the average person. sorry if that was not plain to see.

as to the passport arguement - i've read it time and again. dunk said americans don't step off their front doorstep.....and i disagreed. one can travel a LOT and FAR, right within the USA, meet many different cultures, be richly experienced in different cultures - damn, i can do so every day at work, to/from work.....NYC....without ever utilizing a passport. given that many countries in europe are smaller than a great # of states, i'd hazard to guess while sure more europeans have passports, and sure, visiting different countries....it really isn't that broad to travel to 5 different neighboring countries in europe than it is here. also, used to be you didn't need a passport for canada or mexico..so one could travel a LOT within north america and not require one. that said, personally i can't see not owning a passport, simply b/c i love to travel and yes travel far and go to other countries. however, at any given time....even one well-traveled may well be without a passport b/c i believe ours expire every 10 years i think? so sure, if mine was to expire and i didn't have a foreign trip planned, i'd not renew until i did. so that little 'fact' is deceiving.

how any of this relates to jesus christ being sworn in yesterday tho..i have no idea. ;)

dunky......you're as pedantic as they come as well m'dear....at least hold the mirror up to yourself rather than simply reflecting it on others. :) at least i own up to my nature. and sure...not everything is as clear cut, right/wrong....as what time a TV show begins.

8 pages of response - of course not all by you ;) - simply to express how bored you are with a phrase? sounds like great interest to me. funny you find it 'continually' spouted. i LIVE here and the only occasion i hear it is for poltical speeches, national holidays and the like. amazingly, i don't hear people continually spouting off 'god bless america' on a daily basis.
