btw - i find it interesting that by hearing the phrase 'god bless america'.....makes you actually think that by default, that means all americans want god NOT to bless elsewhere. seriously, taking things a bit far, no?

That thought occurred to me too. If I do someone a favor and they say "ah, God bless you!" I don't lecture them for wishing ill on everyone else in the world besides me. That's an absurd argument.

i can see now that uttering 'jesus christ' is quite appropriate right now in this thread. ;)

just an fyi - nothing is free...someone is always footing the bill.
anmd yes, some states have a 65 mph speed limit, as such items are determined on the state, not federal level. and in every state of the union one can make a right turn at a red light, EXCEPT within NYC. just some trivia for ya. :)

hey jeagler...your bro was there for the inauguration? has he shared any of his experience? is he as giddy as the media? do share........

and dunk - when i was teaching in prague, more than a few students mentioned how they have visited florida. obviously, not representative of all - and i too always assumed most woud go to NYC first, for obvious reasons ;) - so yea....just threw me some.

    cheap drugs?

i dont believe it is, but i'd be interested in hearing why you think it is? what has it got no other countries have?

do you have free healthcare, dental care and eyecare? do you have free education from age 5 right up until university? do you have a macho 70mph speed limit instead of some poofy 55mph? that'll be a no then? ;)

dont ask me. ask the above referenced millions of immigrants who choose to flock here rather than any other country on the face of the planet every single year.

and, we got 65 mph highways my man! but the jeagler refuses to abide by them!....we also got pearl jam ;)

ahhh you edited the bit about lack of travel, lack of knowledge of other countries and their 'greatness'

supporting a team is one thing... i dont claim my team to be the greatest... if team = country... then i still dont proclaim that at every patriotic moment i possibly can... people should know their countries/teams limitations.

I also dont ask god to bless my teams... nor my country... americans do... which is ironic in that whilst others believe it to be the greatest country in the world its greatness also lies in its ability to be morally corrupt... and yet it is the only country to be blessed by god. dont you find that hypocritical. that christians in the US live in a country that has the most horrendous crimes, rapes, muggings, drugs... possibly highest drug consumption in the world.. prostitution.. high divorce rate.. child pregnancy... organised crime.. fraud.. alcoholism... etc etc.. and yet then proclaim it to be the greatest in the world? that god only bless it?

Norway is like heaven in comparison.

I edited out the part where I confirmed that you admit your comment about where people are born was irrelevant, as I figured it was made plain. As to travel, I'm not sure I agree with you. You can travel to Norway easier than I can get to California. The US is almost the entire size of Europe. So if you're talking about serious world travel, I'm willing to bet there's not much difference between the number of Scots going to Asia versus Americans. Most people I know have been to Europe or Asia or Africa. We do plenty of travel.

As to the sloganizing... I addressed 'God Bless America' above and your argument there is so logically absurd it's laughable. There are plenty of things to fault America for, as you do right there with our many social problems. But God Bless America is not one of them. It's more of a rallying cry than actually calling for God to bless America and only America, as I'm sure you know and only stubbornly refuse to acknowledge because then you'd have to debate with substance. The alternative to that phrase is, as I see it, along the lines of "TIA" from the movie Blood Diamond... you can either hopelessly accept the problems and let them degenerate, or you can attempt to rally people to do better. God Bless America is simply the latter, and you're taking it far too literally, more literally than I think anyone intends it.

Yes, America has many social problems. However, if you want to build a great international company, it's a helluva good place to start. If you want a country that supports your strict observance of sharia law, Saudi Arabia is perfect for you. If you want socialized health care and homogenous Nordic population, Norway is great. If you want to wear a skirt and have other men be ok with it, Scotland it is.

Norway is no more heaven to the US than the US is the greatest country on Earth. It's all a matter of subjective perspective and depends upon what you're looking for in a society.

dunky....i personally think you are purposefully being obtuse on the topic. there is nothing to 'prove'...it is a feeling, a belief, whatever...that some people may have. it is not based on immigration stats or any such thing, just a pride of place, etc. i am not saying it is my personal belief, but i do know people who say things like the 'greatest country on earth'...and yes, i believe they mean it...and really, it has NADA to do with stats or such, just a feeling of loving where they come from, etc. it may not be how you or i would choose to express ourselves, but really...it's not an 'argument' to be had seriously. :P

That's new immigrants? Does that account for how many apply and how many are turned away? In addition, think of those numbers in terms of the number of people coming, not just rates... 3000 people coming into the US for every million leaving here is still a hell of a lot more people coming here than are going to Canada. I also note that Norway isn't on the list. As to speed limite, Michigan has 70mph and Montana has no speed limit at all. What the hell has that got to do with anything?

You're proud of being Scottish. A lot of people of proud of America. I don't see why you get so wound up about how people express it.

Kudos for the subtle racism though... it's so awful of the US to accept so many poor black folks from war-torn countries that Europe keeps out, lest they start feeding off that free medicine, right?

If you said Scotland was the greatest country in the world the only thing I'd think would be "he must really like the country he's from." I'd not think of it remotely in terms of right and wrong as there is no such thing in that debate. Nor would I spend my day trying to dig up stats to prove that Scotland isn't or talk endlessly about how wrong that opinion is and then disingenuously claim I don't care and it just bores me.

i don't give a shit either, and i would not mock...or if i did so, it would be purely for comical effect :P , and not for serious discussion. whether one thinks the personal assessment is incorrect or not really doesn't matter....and to me, that's the point. it may be misguided pride, but it is simply pride and not to the exclusion of others being blessed or thinking their country is great, etc. i think ignorance knows no national boundaries.

  • So many seem to believe we are all going to wake up in a new world tomorrow and so many are going to be so sorely disappointed. I truly hope Obama does good things and makes the world and this country a better place, but I foresee no great "change" on the horizon except for who will be living in the White House. Obama never really explained what kind of change he was going to bring did he? Maybe that was all he meant.

But the media is outrageous. On msn.com today there was a story that said, nearly word for word, this:
Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th Pres. of the USA this afternoon, banshing forever 200 years of history during which the presidency was passed from white hands to white hands.

Seriously? Nothing that happened before counts now? It is all banished? Wow!
I couldn't find the story when i went to look for the link to post, but the same headline was there with a different lead on it...I wonder...
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all

YES, Christian americans are the only ones to utter the phrase 'god bless america' :D when I was a kid and said my prayers before going to bed it was 'god bless mammy, god bless daddy, god bless my sister and brother, god bless *insert aunt/uncle name here* and I named EVERYONE I knew :D but never did I say 'and god... please bless Ireland' :D that's just retarded... and I'm about as patriotic as you can get... and I was brought up religious so I know to ask god to bless an entire COUNTRY is just stupid. It certainly IS a patriotic thing. Here we have a few Americans listening to people from outside telling them what THEY feel are ignorant statements and being told they're wrong.

    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"

Such irony. WE are ignorant... yet your first sentence is to claim that you know for a fact Christian Americans are the only ones to utter that phrase. You're wrong. It's said by many who are not religious. that phrase has become secular, just like the whole Santa Clause-Christmas thing.

You're entitled to say it's in poor taste or arrogant or whatever, but there is nothing ignorant about it. And I won't say you're wrong, but I will say you're overreacting. It's a meaningless, harmless phrase with as much religion meaning as "God bless you" after someone sneezes.
