I"m taking a roadtrip to Chicago in May and my bf thinks we should take Fenris with us instead of boarding him. At first I was like what?? It's a 9 hour ride and he hates the car! The more I thought about it I started to like the idea so I'm going to see if I can train him to enjoy the car. If I can't he'll go to kitty camp! Today we took him in his new carrier (the backpack one) and went for a ride. First off, he seemed more at ease in this carrier. I think because he can stand up or lay down and he can see out just about every angle. So we drove around and I took him to the beach. After parking I let him out to walk around in the car. He was inquisitive and loved looking out the windows! A few big dogs and a large group of people walked right near the car (I think it scared him a little) and he just went into the open carrier and laid back down. Since I was in a small area I drove around with him free in the car. He looked out the windows and walked around but mostly stayed standing in his comfy carrier. When I got home he let me zip him up no problem and inside we went. I think he liked it. My friend does the long drive from FL to New England 3 times a year with between 3 and 5 of her cats. They have crates but are free to walk around the Suburban. She said once their curiosity was sated they usually just sleep in their crates or on her lap. I'm a little concerned about him being free in the car, but small dogs are so I don't see how this is any different. Just like walking on a leash it seems like Fen will adapt well. If not I'll board him

was he on a leash when you took him out of the car? i'd be scared if i did that to my cats. They'd probably run away.

oh, no. I didn't take him out of the car sorry for the confusion. He was in the car, just out of the carrier!
I may have just misread it. Couldn't you just have someone come in and take care of him instead of boarding him. That's what I personally would try and do, but if the cat's ok with being in a car i guess it's not too much of a problem

I would board him. He likes people and to be mostly alone for 4 days with someone coming in to feed him wouldn't be good. 2 days is ok but 4 is too long. Anyway I have plenty of time. If he seems too stressed I won't press the car but today he did great. Much better than expected. He goes to visit at my moms with her 2 cats and he loves walking on his leash. He likes to do stuff! Just not thrilled with being locked up in a small crate in the car. he usually cries constantly. He didn't do that today.

when I was a kid we always took the family cat on family vacations. Once we got into Jersey the cat was let out of the carrier. The only thing is you have to keep the windows closed and you have to have someone alert in the passenger's seat to make sure kitty doesn't try to climb on the driver or around the pedals. If you have a fancy car I'd put the windows locked so that kitty can't open them by stepping on the button by accident.

Thats the plan! I hope it works out. I only like to board if necessary and my mom is 80, her cats go outside and I know if he stayed there she would let him out by accident.

Fen in car training. He seems to have found a groove. Likes to move about a little and then he settles into his carrier and just kind of looks around. Next step is about an hour on the highway. " />

I'm having a really hard time missing my Tabby Lu...as you guys know it's been almost a year and half since she passed...I don't feel like my heart is healing...and I don't feel like anyone in my life understands the pain I feel missing her...she was my baby, my bestest friend, my little angel kitty...and she was just gone too soon...I bawled so hard this morning I almost threw up....

I'm so sorry to hear you're still suffering over your lost PJS. I understand that it's helpful to feel like others understand what you're going through. You know, when people lose someone one good option is grief therapy. Who says that's only for when you lose a human???

Good idea. Took me almost 4 years after mine passed for me to get another cat. I missed that guy so much...but now I 'm in a new relationship and I think fondly of my friend I had for 10 years. Just like a family member.

Fen is still car training. I find when he wears his harness he's feels more comfortable. We went for a ride and a walk at the beach today...this freakin dude is so cool...

I found some support groups on facebook and I actually realized that the reason I've been so down is because it the anniversary of when I adopted Tabby Lu...subconsciously I knew it, it just took a bit longer for me to catch on....a friend suggested that I write her a letter and address the envelope to Tabby Lu The Rainbow Bridge and then take it outside and burn it and watch as the wind carries it towards the heavens and know that she was receiving it and a beautiful angel would read it to her...i did that last night...it actually helped a lot....

Fen went into the side pocket of his carrier, got his leash out and dragged it to the front door. He then proceeded to make it well known he wanted to go for a walk outside. Sorry bud, it was raining.
On another kitty note, my moms cats go outside and are avid hunters. In her small backyard I found 6 chipmunk tails :-(
