"We thought about just going for it, and filing for a number [of about $17 million], but we thought this was fair. Our sights are now set on free agency. At some point, we'll talk to the Phillies about that.'' Noting the unpredictable nature of free agency, Boggs sang his client's praises and added, "Pitching is something everybody will always be clamoring for. That never changes."

"Ruben wanted to proceed in this fashion, and then discuss a multi-year deal later," Boggs said. "I anticipate discussing a long-term deal for Cole as we get into spring training."

Amaro said talks with Hamels "probably" will take place in spring training and confirmed that he wanted to first negotiate a one-year deal for the lefthander.

Makes sense. MLBTR didn't have that one posted. Gonna take a big number though, will be really interesting. There's a huge number waiting for him in 30 or so starts. I'm not even all that optimistic that the Yankees would sign him even if he did get there next year, lot's of big market teams would be in the running for him. Yankees, Boston, Cubs and Nationals, for sure. Marlins maybe, Angels maybe. Dodgers could go big if the new ownership is in place.

I'm a lot less desperate for the Yanks to get big time pitching after Friday's trade too.

I'd say more than the Weaver deal. I think a 5 yr 90 or 95 will do it.

I think Hamels will (should) laugh at anything under $100. The Weaver deal is a bargain. I can't see how you can get under $20mil AAV. How can it not match Lee's deal considering age and what the market will be for him?

Will be interesting to see what happens, especially if Cain signs before him.

Edit: And when the Phillies are paying well above market for closers, I would imagine Hamels will certainly want what he deserves

This is true. But it's Weaver's fault - not Papelbon's - for what has been earmarked as the price for a pitcher his age and with similar stats.

Either way, if that's the case, I'm sure 5 for 100 wouldn't be hard to do. I don't see why this won't get done the more I think about it. If there's one guy deserving than anyone on this roster for that kind of money is Hamels. Looks like they might go to arbitration with Pence. I'm sure things like this - or possibly an extension with Hunter - will have to be looked as well to determine what the overall numbers will be for the entire roster. Like I said - I'm sticking by my words that it'll get done.

Hunter Pence filed for $11.8MM, while the Phillies countered at $9MM, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com tweets.

I had a plan to kidnap one of his sons, but the wife wouldn't let it happen. damn her

Nice. That's the same shopping center where Iget my hair cut. And why you ask? Of course that's where Roy gets his hair cut that's why.

I've gotten bombed at that sports bar a few times. Not a bad spot to watch games

I might have to start going to get my hair cut there too. And I see more meals at bonefish...especially on phils off days

for a chain....bonefish isn't too bad. we didn't see anybody interesting....well, except for the couple looking to swing.

Why can't Andy Musser, Richie Ashburn, and Harry Kalas all be allowed to rise from the dead in exchange for McCarthy and Wheels?

Fielders contacts will be about a 4 year contact when the same age as Howard and Tex is the same number of years and age at a slightly lower AAV. All of them are bad.
