Well, in the playoffs we would probably have Halladay and Lee pitching...

Sounds like we'll get to see Vogelsong tonight. Timmy's yeast infection is still bothering him.
glad timmy got his female problems cleared up before we left town.

just be glad he couldn't pitch game 1. otherwise, you never would've gotten the gift of zito.

Talk about misquoting, no one in the world has ever said an RBI is easy to get. Hitting a 95 mph baseball is difficult in general. RBI are however, not a good way to judge a players ability.

forming conclusions based on 3 at bat sample sizes is always brilliant

nah just an angry post in the middle of a frustrating game.

giants got our number right now which has me concerned but still think we are the better team. couple of bad defensive plays and no clutch hitting (just like last playoffs) last 2 nights. it happens.

We obviously would prefer having the Braves play the Giants in the first round while we play some schlepp from the NL Central.

Last night's pitching matchup was a mismatch, just like Tuesday. Hamels lost to Cain because of some bad luck. It's just 3 regular season games - they don't mean any more than the other 159.

kendrick pitched well enough to win last night. no offense (and stupid plays like bunting a guy over in the first inning) and sloppy defense was the reason they lost (same as the NLCS).

looks like a pence deal is going to go down today. apparently phils are close.

Paul Hagen's article today has a negative view on Pence from an agent. Take it for what it's worth.

And now, speaking for the opposing standpoint, Rob Plummer . . .

He's a successful agent who has focused his efforts on talent-rich Latin America. He watches baseball through a scout's eyes. He's also a Philadelphia native who unabashedly wishes nothing but the best for the Phillies. And his dispassionate assessment of the cost-benefit ratio is that getting Pence would be a huge mistake that will ultimately backfire badly. His scouting report:

Not a fast bat . . . Needs to cheat a lot and therefore strikes out a lot . . . Not a high OPS guy . . . Would not protect [Ryan] Howard in the batting order . . . Not a guy I would like to pay a lot over the next 3 years like you would have to in [arbitration] . . . Not a great defensive player either. Not a premium guy worth giving up premium cheap future-salaried young players . . . I would trade the young guys if it was a guy with an OPS of .950 or above, more athletic with higher upside with a faster bat."

He added that, in his opinion, Pence is the kind of hitter who can compile decent numbers during the regular season but is susceptible to the consistently superior starters that teams face in the playoffs.

Plummer doesn't dispute that Pence might be the best righthanded bat believed to be available. He just doesn't think that's a good enough reason to move blindly ahead at the expense of 2013, 2014 and beyond. And he's especially reluctant to part with Cosart.

He'd make a move and part with prospects if the return was a player who would really make an impact, would markedly improve the Phillies' chances for another parade down Broad Street. He just doesn't think Pence is that guy. In fact, he's not sure that guy exists. Or he'd trade lesser prospects for a marginal improvement.

It's worth saying again that not even getting a bat the quality of, say, Matt Kemp, would guarantee another trophy. Not to mention that there have been no rumors to this point indicating that the Dodgers would consider trading him.

The Astros have helped the Phillies in the past, trading them Brad Lidge before the 2008 season and Roy Oswalt right about this time last year. Plummer strongly believes Houston would best help the Phils this time by holding onto Pence no matter how much the Phillies offer.

how does it work? division winner with best record plays wild card unless they're from the same division, in which case best record division winner plays worst record division winner? :?

your boys look to be in for sure....I'm still not 100% comfortable that giants will win their division. :problem:

You got it. So NL East winner plays NL Central winner; NL West winner plays Wild Card (2nd place NL East).

The D-Backs are for real but I don't think they can catch your team, esp with Beltran.

Phillies losing the division lead and playing Giants in the first round would be disastrous.

No matter who ends up with Pence, it seems like the Astros are going to get the better of this deal. What's out there is just way too fucking much for this guy.

I'm starting to sway this way big time. I feel like Quentin or Upton could be acquired for less.

We offered Hou Brown,Cosart and Singelton for Pence according to Jayson Stark. Hou is looking for a 3rd team to flip Brown to. That's to much for Pence without getting something else back besides Pence imo.

definitely a sellers market. even though SF overpaid for beltran, that might look brilliant after this pence deal goes down.

I'm fine with the phils overpaying in this deal. They would have him for 2 years after 2011 and it's pretty obvious that even though brown could turn out to be good (i'm still skeptical), that he isn't ready to help them in the playoffs this year.

RAJ has about 50 hours to make something happen.

I love all of this trade activity/rumors. You just don't get that much of this stuff in the other leagues.

kenny williams hasn't really said if quentin is available or not. the chisox are a game under 500 and only 3 out of first. fucking terrible

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Phillies "might be willing to redirect" Domonic Brown to a third team in order to get the Astros the prospects they want for Hunter Pence.
In other words, the Astros don't think a package of Brown, plus likely pitching prospect Jarred Cosart, is enough for Pence, which is absolutely ludicrous. Sherman, as well as others, are saying that the Astros want pitching in return, and it appears the Phillies are unable to satisfy their demands without a third team getting involved. Stay tuned.

Pretty much what Stark says. Crazy shit Houston is fucking crazy!!!!!!!!!!
