i thought that happened over the summer but it was just reported recently...

I guess that's what it is, but like I said, can't knock em for trying. Good chunk of change, just not all the years he wants.

yeah i was actually surprised. if they're willing to do that...what was it 4 years, 66M? ....you'd have to think they'd have a shot if he ends up getting something around 5 years 85M. ...i dunno

The Phils should sign Pat Burrell to sign autographs in the BBQ pit in rightfield.

Yup, those 2011 (that's "twenty-eleven" please) seats should have a good chunk already paid.

If that's the case, I don't know, maybe they could work out a 6 year deal with a player option for year 5 and mutual option for year 6 - if those things are allowed.

I think they should trade Victorino. Free up some cash, and you could get a more valuable platoon for him than you would for Werth. Sign like a Podsednik and another guy who know will be willing to play small ball - the things that made Shane good - over trying to jack the ball over the fence all the time.
  • Trade Rollins and Victorino, resign Werth move him to cf(insert the fixers comment here) then rip up Oswalt"s contract and agree to a new 3yr deal. Sign a decent right handed bat(possible Vlad or Mags) that can platoon with both corner OF spots. So basically it's Rollins and Shane for Werth and Oswalt,i'll take the big bat and Pitcher over a SS who's injury prone and a cf who is the dumbest player in baseball anyday.

Vlad isn't playing the outfield, did you not see this idiot play right in the World Series. Dude is a permanent DH. Rollins isn't injury prone outside of this year. 08 and 09 were incidental injuries - ala product of the game, going back to a bag, etc. Jimmy is the best befensive SS in the league. Baseball teams build themselves up the middle - catcher, ss, 2b, cf. Jimmy's issues can be resolved over an offseason, albeit if he wants to do the extra work. By your logic, Magglio is just as, if not more, "injury prone". The moves you just thought of are those of an early 2000's Yankees team. And that's definitely not who I want to be. And Shane's not a dumb baseball player. Just makes mistakes on the basepaths. Dude is a much better fielder than Werth. If you keep Werth, you keep him in right and bring in a couple guys like Podsednik and Reed Johnson to platoon center.

    um, no.

then you'd have an OF of ibanez, werth, and vlad/mags. wow, awful. not to mention they'd have to sign some turd like juan uribe to play SS.

last year it was hamels, this year it's rollins. I don't get philly's need to run good players out of town. rollins catches everything, he's not making much money this year, and he was hurt for all of 2010. he's playing for a contract in 2011...he's gonna have a monster year.

and oswalt has an option for 2012. no need to give him a new contract.

people need to come to grips with the fact that jayson werth is gone. he's gonna get overpaid by someone and it's not gonna be the phils. no need to blow up what they've got. they will be the NL favorites again entering 2011.

Because people with a football mindset jump the gun on all this shit. You don't fix your problems with the above like I explained in my above post.

    Rollins = contract year. Huge.

But, if I did wanna shake the house up to keep Werth then I'm trading Vic. But you gotta bring in speed and defense to take his place

yeah, I can understand a victorino trade. and he's signed for 2 or 3 years at a reasonable rate, so he's somewhat attractive to other teams. also, victorino is easier to replace than rollins.

it should be an interesting offseason. no need to do anything too drastic. their core is still intact, just need some complimentary pieces. and hope that utley, rollins, howard, victorino rebound from down years in 2010

I'm hoping that amaro brings in some mid-level veteran free agents to sure up the OF and bullpen (short term deals on the cheap). if those moves don't work you try to swing a trade at the deadline...or go the SF route and pick up guys on the scrap heap.

To echo everyone else, this is awful. Werth is just an adequate CF. Vlad can't play the field because he has artificial knees (well almost). Victorino is a smarter (well, less dumb) player than Werth.

What's Oswalt have to do with it? Just be glad we have him next year, and not for 100 years like Burnett.

Rollins will have a big 2011. Who would play SS, Desi Relaford? Double Play Valdez?

This sounds like something a WIP caller would come up with.

Fixer, I'm coming at you with this one because I think you will enjoy it.

Randy Miller, whom I respect tremendously as a baseball writer, was on the radio suggesting trading Chase Utley. Stick that in your man love pipe and smoke it.

Yeah, I wouldn't do it either.

I really think we're looking at big bounce-back seasons for Utley, Rollins & Victorino.

I know she's from Philly. So maybe she's from frequent Irish Pub after hours visits and she just deals with it better than others. All I know is my buddy had a chance to drink with him in Toronto, but things got screwed up - as my buddy says - so I blame him for not coming through with such a galivanting night. Two dudes I want to drink with - Eddie Vedder and Pat Burrell. One for idolization reasons, and the latter because the dude gets straight up weird. And I can respect that.

Definitely concur with the first two, but I don't know about Vic. Dude's gotta stop trying to jack the ball. Want to see what made him a favorite of mine back in '07 - the drag bunt.
