  • I caught World War Z and Star Trek into Darkness over the weekend.

Star Trek was awesome. I thought WWz was kinda boring. The end was kick ass though. Slow, creepy zombies like Walking Dead are much scarier.

    Star Trek - pretty good

Iron man 3 - pretty good as well

that's why Olympus got skewered in the press, because it essentially is the same movie as White House Down and didn't come out that long after.

It didn't. I mean in the beginning it seems like it tried to, but then they gave up trying entirely.
Nathan Fillion's Firefly joke was the best part of that movie IMHO. Also Anthony Stewart Head was awesome as Chiron.
I am a huge fan of the books.

Watched Star Trek Into Darkness. Did not like. Simon Pegg & Benedict Cumberbatch were both awesome but it was just too cheesy and noticeably sexist in a way that irked me.

Are you talking about how its hundreds of years in the future and all the commanders gather and its a bunch of old white men? I thought that was odd. Was there more?

It was that combined with the only two female characters being stereotyped in a way that suggests whoever wrote them has a really weird idea of women.

    Caution! Spoilers to follow:
The only 2 female characters I noticed were Lt. Uhura (Yea I know I'm spelling it wrong, sue me) and the blond chick whose name escapes me. The Lt starts an argument with her bf with a passive aggressive comment while on a mission with him & the captain. She goes out to do her job & talk with the klingons and ends up needing to be rescued. I'm not crazy, this character is supposed to be a solider right? Yet she's portrayed as insecure, weak and out of her depth.
The blonde chick that lied her way onto the ship ends up being super smart which is nice until we learn she only has knowledge of these things because she her daddy let her read his files. This is the same character that defuses the bomb so I recognize there are some strengths to her, but remember she's also the screaming woman injured on the floor during a major fight scene.
I know the characters are based on existing framework from the old series, so I'm hesitant to even complain about it, but that's a big part of why it irked me. It very easily could've been updated to include some more modern representation of gender roles, and of power structure .... but it didn't have to be because that shit is still acceptable. On the other hand, back in the day Stark Trek was like well known for its casting of women, and not-just-white people and it was seen as forward-thinking or progressive or something. Or am I wrong on this? I dunno I can't articulate it well but it just bugged the hell out of me.

That makes sense duska! I didnt see too many of the earliest Star Trek TV episodes, but I get the feeling that women were portrayed the same back then too. I can see why that would bother you..They shouldve made Uhura a badass and able to handle herself.

not that i disagree with duska's issues but uhura is a communications expert ... her role is in linguistics and translating ... she's going up against a klingon security force ... i don't see any reasonable expectation that she could deliver any sort of ass kicking there ...
