I watch once they become professionals.
How lame is it that the guy who will be starting in the NFL next year is playing against the guy who will be working in the AP dept for some small business?
how lame is it that a guy plays for a city he doesn't even like or care for?
NFL is all about money, who will pay me more. They don't give a crap about the fans or the cities they play for..
College players on the other hand pick the team they want to play for, and they are a part of that team till the day they die. This is the reason there are rivalries in college sports but not in the pros (Yankees Red Sox is no exception). Rivalries in college sports reach other to everyone including the players. In pro sports rivalries are just between the fans, the players don't give a crap because they could be playing for the other team the next year if they are offered more money.
I guess it's hard to get into it when you have crappy college football in your area, but college sports are much better than pro sports.
I've posted this before, but I got a lot of satisfaction by watching that videoclip of Bobby Petrino squealing like a pig for money on national television.
No rivalries in the pros? what planet are you on? The rivarly is the same in pro as in college...its not joe smith vs. joe jones, its the uniform against the uniform....its red sox vs. yankees, cardinals vs. cubs, giants vs. eagles, denver vs. oakland, east memphis state vs. southern northeast over the hill behind the flagpole state, etc.
pros son, pros. where its at.
do you think the players in college actually hate the players on the rival team? if so, they got issues.
- Most players pick between schools coming out of High School- say Joe Smith gets offers from Georgia, USC and Texas-- he will chose to be a Texas Longhorn.
Say Johnny Damon plays for the Red Sox and is a Red Sox hero, and the next year the Yankees offer him more money-- do you see that in college sports? Does a guy born and raised a Duke Blue Devil switch after a season and become a Tarheel?
I know the players don't hate the other team's players, but they atleast acknowledge the rivalry. They say things like "I don't care how good our record is, as long as we beat_____" They know going in that if you play for USC, your big game each year is against UCLA. It's not like the pros where everyone is buddies even while playing. It's not like the pros where your teams' legends could wear enemy colors the next season because of money.
Plus in pros you pick your team, whereas in college sports you earn the right to cheer for your team with a degree from that school. In pros it's easy to jump on one teams bandwagon, but in college, you can graduate a Sooner, and die a Sooner.
As if it wasn't enough, most state colleges are made up of players from your own community. For example, the 2002 Ohio State National Championship team had 3 guys I played against in High School. That is pretty cool, and you don't see that in the pros.
Just one of the many ways college sports trump pro sports
Don't forget the "heart" involved. Most of those kids are playing to make it to the next level, or playing knowing this will be the last time they will get to play before becoming "adults." It's not like when you're getting paid millions regardless of if you play, if you win, etc.
To make a music analogy, it's like what Dee Snider said about your heart in your music career after it takes off - "How can you write pissed off music when you are sitting in your nice house, with your hot wife and your fancy cars" etc etc.
You dont think pros acknowledge the rivalry? Look at Edmonds...he thought for sure the Cubs fans wouldnt embrace him. He knows how it goes. And, the pros want to win championships, not beat the team across town.
no, you dont. you earn the right to be scouted by proving yourself and working your ass off, and if you are good enough, you get drafted. then, if you play 5 years and others want you, then you can have your pick.....maybe. and nobody, pro or college who is a bandwagon jumper is respected. we all have "that friend "that gets shit every football season because he is the champions biggest fan.
there are thousands of guys who played against pros in college. I would much rather be able to say I played against Tom Brady in college than the third string water boy on the Ohio State Championship team who is now selling cars at the local Ford dealership.
you are nuts.
let's keep the talk here to college football
thanks
Cie Grant, Mike Doss, and Dustin Fox where the guys I was speaking of- one was a 3x All American, and all three got drafted. Did you play against Tom Brady in college or something? what college did you graduate from?
Chris Wells, was offered a scholarship to USC, Ohio State and Michigan.. his exact quote as to why he chose Ohio State " I was born to be a Buckeye, I visited the other schools to see what they were all about, but I was born a Buckeye and I will die a Buckeye" - how many Red Sox or Patriots say that?
Schools get guys every year that turn down other scholarships for a chance to play for their favorite team. For example, Ross Homan got offers to over 8 division 1 schools, but wanted more than anything to play for Ohio State so he walked on and earned a spot on the team without a scholarship. Guys do this all the time. How many guys in the pros take less money to play for their favorite team growing up?
Co signed.
The defense is going to be incredible.
besides, like all pit discussions, someone gets bored, or the work day ends, and our "takeover" of your thread dies.
