  • I won't be losing any sleep if the Sox don't get Santana. The pieces are still in place, and we'll be that much better of a team still with Ellsbury on our side. Go after Haren, I say.

  • Just heard Peavy is close to a 3 yr $52/mil extension. Good for the Padres keeping him around. Wouldn't want Burnett, he's hurt all the time. Penny's overrated. Sheets is good, but he's also hurt too much. I'm also basing my 2009 assumptions on the hoep that the 3 kids pitch well, Wang continues to pitch well and Pettitte's back. If that's the case (and it's a whole heap of wishful thinking, I know) then there won't be a need for any of these guys.

But unless 2 of the 3 kids blossom into bona fide ace material quick, how can the Yanks compete in a playoff series with that rotation matching up against Boston with Beckett and Santana at the top (assuming the deal happens), Detroit with Bonderman and Willis or Cleveland with CC and Carmona. The Yanks may be able to slug their way into the playoffs, but without quality pitching at the top of the rotation, they won't have any shot to advance in the post season.

  • true, but they usually do ok against Santana and beckett. At least since Beckett came to Boston. And Sabathia didn't pitch great by any means against the Yankees in the playoffs. Willis doesn't scare me at all. I think he's very overrated. He'll be the next to suffer from the NL to AL move. I think Joba's gonna be great as a starter. I have high hopes for Hughes too. kennedy they say could be a Mussina type, which is pretty high praise as long as they're talking about late 90's to early 00's Mussina

The last 2 years Beckett vs. the Yankees:
    4-3 6.75 ERA in 46 and 2/3 IP

Santana vs. the Yankees since 03 when he became a starter including the postseason:
    4-1 2.50 ERA in 58 IP

So yes, you have handled Beckett, but Santana has had one bad start against the Yankees and that was in the post season.

  • I didn't mean they clubbed him. Most games he goes 7 innings and leaves with a score of 2-1 or 3-2. Very similar to how they handled Pedro. hang in the game, get the pitch count up, and get to the bullpen in the late innings

ETA: 4 playoff starts against The Yankees.

    2003 Game 1 (ND) 4 IP 0 ER 3 hits 2 BB
Not sure why he only went 4, but the Twins won, and if he threw one more inning he likely would have got the W

    2003 game 4 (L) 3 2/3 6 ER

    2004 game 1 (W) 7 IP 0 ER 9 hits

    2004 Game 4 (ND) 5 IP 1 ER
Just 87 pitches. This was a great game. Santana leaves after 5 with a 5-1 lead. The Yankees score 4 in the 8th and 1 in the 11th. Again, not sure why he left after 5. The Twins were doen 2-1 in a best of 5. Was gardenhire looking to save him for a potential Game 5?

Found something surprising looking up these stats. he's made 5 postseason starts and has 1 win. He's 1-4, which includes a loss as a reliever. I'm not looking to knock him, he is the best pitcher in baseball. That just surprised me.

the latest rumblings from peter gammons is that the sox/twins santana deal might be dead and the twins might hang on to santana.

time to move on to dan haren.
  • Can't understand why oakland would move him. he's cheap and 3 years away from free agency. i guess he just sees that pitching is the hot commodity, and guys with 1 or 2 years of success are overvalued

oakland can afford the $16.25mil due haren of the next 3 years and if they can't, they shouldn't have a team.
  • agreed. Beane just thinks he's a genius, and sees what quality pitchers are going for. He probably views offense as undervalued now and is looking to sell high, buy low.

anyone get through to get tickets?

i've been stuck in a virtual waiting room 2 hours now, which i totally expected. the only update is that the opening day package is sold out (obviously).

I am in a huge conundrum. My fiancee is a Sox fan and I love the Brewers, BUT we also hold an annual party for the Preakness which lands on Saturday, May fucking 17. Do we do the Friday night game in Boston and fly down in the morn, or get up with massive hangovers and fly up and back Sunday? BTW I love that the Brewers are relevant enough to garner the "Brew Crew" pack. Shall I wear my Gallardo or Villaneuva jersey to get heckled by you Bostonians?

BTW good luck getting tix to everyone I haven't gotten them yet either but WILL def go to one of those games and have blueberry beer at the beerworks I don't care about those stupid rules on fruiting beer. Anyone who made that rule obviously hasn't had Blueberry wheat.

I sat around in the VWR until the Opening Day pack sold out then called it quits. Looks like I will be sleeping outside of Fenway in the spring.

i'm not sure it is that the brewers are relevant (although they are def. and up and coming team), the sox usually offer up a package based around one of the series against an NL team that hasn't come to fenway in a few years. i'm looking forward to seeing gallardo in person (ie - tv) and braun and prince maybe jack a couple out.

i would go with the friday night game. a short night of sleep is always better than a massive hangover, at least in my opinion.

i got in a vwr around 9:40 and have been sitting in the same on since. i had breakfast, read the globe, took a shower, had some left over pizza, went out to get a christmas tree, put christmas tree in the house in the stand...and still no luck.

1:30 update was that all the "pax" were sold out except for one that has limited ticket left.

i got one of the "pax" the first year they were available (back when frank castillo still pitched for the sox) and i thought they were cool until we sat next to the same jackasses for each game of the package.

Yeah I recognize that, but they chose to market the Brewers out of the incoming teams this year which was cool to see. It sucks that the O's are playing them in Milwaukee b/c I would have definitely got tix to that set of games. Either way I need to watch Gallardo in person before he becomes the next Red Sox or Yankees pitcher. He is Pedro (circa 2002/3) nasty but only has a 93 mph fastball. I have a feeling Braun/Hardy will have a better go of it in Fenway than Prince but it'd be sweet to watch them play AL style baseball, plus I have been talking smack to my finacees family and my Red Sox friends that they play Sox style ball just younger (Braun/Fielder=Manny/Papi) and less good in the field. Either way hopefully it'll be a sweet pitching matchup like Sheets/Gallardo/Bush or healthy Capuano vs. Beckett/Matsusaka(Santana)/Schilling.

Anyway I got shutout so it looks like I'll be going to a single game, I'll probably sit online and work to get those when the single games go on sale for it. Anyone get lucky?

    same here.

i'm surprised the last update was a 2:30 and no single games had sold out yet. i would have to figure the tigers games at the beginning of the year will be the first to now that they have miguel cabrera and dontrelle willis.

If anyone's ever out in the bay area, I'll take you to the coliseum for a sox v a's game, not the prettiest park you've ever been to, but getting tix is really easy. :)

edit - this would be opening night here in Oakland (not including the Tokyo games) ... April 1 and 2 ... also May 23, 24, 25

tickets on sale Monday Dec 17! :D

Anyone else celebrating that Gagne is now officially an ex Red Sox and now a member of the Brewers. I can't believe the Brewers gave him TEN MILLION for this season. Hopefully he comes to pitch in a close game against the Sox when the Brewers come to Fenway this year. I'm sure RSN will treat him kindly. ;)

I puked a lot in my mouth when I saw the Gagne thing this morning...they have had a lot of success in the recent past pulling relievers off the scrap heap and making them servicable (Danny Kolb/Derrick Turnbow/Coco Cordero) so maybe they think they can get something out of him for a year then get him out of there. I doubt it though....ughh. We should have just traded for Chad Cordero...oh well.

I can't believe any team would have given Gagne 10 million - yet alone a smaller market team. I read something that gagne is making 14% of the entire payroll for the brewers this year.

I guess Scott Boras is really that good of an agent if he can get 10 mil for Gagne and 18 mil for Andruw Jones.
