Jimed, here's a little off the wall idea for LF. Instead of giving big money for Holliday or Bay for 5 years or so, would you be happy with the unconventional signing of Vlad for LF. He has little range left, but LF is so small at home and with his gun he should cut down on the number of wall ball doubles. Plus you have Ellsbury patrolling Center who even with Bay and Manny always made plays by the wall in left center covering for them.

Plus you have Hermedia to spot him and he can DH if Papi slumps again. Even in his decline the last three years he's hitting .316 against righties.

I don't think he'll demand more than a 2 year deal for 8 mil per year.

Well, half of the Sox games are on the road ... where Vlad would have to cover a full LF. And wow, he was moving like a really old man last year around the basepaths, note, the Angels didn't play him in the field too much.

Seeing as the Sox appear to be trying to concentrate on pitching and defense, this doesn't make a lot of sense.

True, I just always liked Vlad and always wanted to see what he would do at Fenway in a full season. Plus you figure Papi is gone after this year and he could be a bridge until the Phils go after Howard in 2 years when he leaves the Phillies.

Howard, man, you're playing some serious fantasy baseball now! :D

I LOVE watching Vlad, have so since he was an Expo. I have the baseball package and I like watching Angels games (Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler are a great announcing crew, although FoxSports just fired them both).

Vlad is the best bad ball hitter I think I've ever seen, he's crazy.

I'd love him at DH if Papi wasn't around. I just don't want to see him in LF, as I may be tempted to throw a walker down from the Monster seats.

I've only been watching him for a year or so, but yeah, he's got potantial (he's not at Vlad level yet though) ... best nickname to come out of baseball in a long time.

Yeah man, I thought Theo was hell bent against not giving pitchers 5 years.

The Red Sox assholeness has decliend a bit in recent years with the loss of Manny but this gets it right back up there.

Do I like Lackey? Hell yeah.

Do I like Lackey for 5 years? No.

Thus my consternation ... (perfectly depicted by Carl from Aqua Teen Hungerforce, one of the best shows on TV).

Cliffy, I'm not really sure how this is "assholness" ... it's a big ticket signing. Does that make the Yankees full of super mega assholness? Wait, don't answer that. ;)

Haha, no. I am a Yankees fan so I love big ticket signings. Lackey is just the consummate asshole in my opinion. From showing teammates up when they fuck up to calling out Scoscia in the playoffs. It is going to be fun to root against him in the AL East.

Edit: He is a good picther though, not worth a 5 year contract but definitely gives the Red Sox a very good rotation.

Damn, just heard the Sox made an offer to Aroldis Chapman ... the 21 year Cuban defector who has a ridiculous fastball, but is still untamed and really young. Lit up the World Baseball Classic (for the 15 of us that actually watched it last year).

Note, I expect the Yankees to outbid the Sox on him any second now.

Sox are close to signing mike Cameron to a 2 year 15.5 million dollar deal. Not bad and it kind of screws Boras with the Sox not pursuing Holliday. Cameron is aging, but great defensively! With Lackey signed I think they will make a run at Adrian Gonzalez by using Bucholtz as trade bait. Hopefully take the money saved in OF and resign Beckett.

Chapman would be an interesting signing, but I would be surprised if he ends up with Sox.

Also, it will be a mistake to sign Beltre. Represented by Boras, costly and for too many years. He is a child of the steroid era. Great defensively, but not worth it.

5 years $87.5 Mil. Damn, 17.5 Mil a year for 5 years to a guy who hasn't pitched 200 innings in a couple years. Theo turned into Cashman on this one, overpaid for what he wanted.

  • I was against the Lackey deal for a while, until I talked with a co-worker who played in college. He brought up a good point that Lackey will be going up against #3 pitchers all the time and would eat them alive. He's not a warhorse you can saddle the #1 spot to, but still is a great pitcher if he doesn't have to carry the load.
  • He will be perfect in the playoffs. The Sox will always be in the gane no matter what, no holding our breath after the 1st 2 starts. Although this year it wouldn;t have mattered. Plus with that rotation, barring injuries the playoffs should be a near lock.

Adrian Beltre close to terms with Boston. Guess that takes them out of the running for Adrian Gonzalez. As a Yankees fan, thank you very much for the offseason moves Theo.

Boston rotation may have a slight edge on the Yanks but the lineups don't even compare!

Edit: By the way, the thought of Boston getting A-Gon scared the hell out of me.

6:13pm: Buster Onley tweets some details of the Beltre deal: "BOS offer to Beltre is probably in the range of $10 mill. to $10.5 mill. annually, and the offer is expected to include an opt-out clause."

    HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

6:28pm: And here comes Peter Gammons down the stretch with terms, tweeting: "Beltre 1 yr. Deal for $9m with player option for $5m. Physical coming."

At least it's only 1 year for you guys but what the fuck? $9 mil for a .270 career hitter with a .325 career OBP and an OPS+ of 105. Not a good move.

Oh and add at least $9 mil of Lowells contract to that as well so you are looking at $18+ mil for Adrian Beltre!

It's a one year stop gap until (I'm praying) they get Adrian Gonzalez and can move Youkilis back to 3rd.

    He's a good defensive 3B (gold gloves in 07 and 08). And he's actually only 30.

Again, stop gap measure with the pickins on the market very slim. One year deal means he's incentivized. Maybe the Green Monster will rejuvinate his bat.

Not horrified by this, not excited either.

Yeah, not as bad as when Onley was saying $10 mil plus a year. Theo must know they are not getting A-Gon this season. Definitely a stop gap but he is not going to put up much better offensive numbers than Lowell, definitely improved defense but they are going to have to play a lot of his contract as well.

Overall, this does not make Boston better next season in my opinion

You know Lowell isn't going anywhere, right?

The deal with Texas is off due to Lowell's thumb issues. Not sure if they will redo the deal once he's healed up in a month or so.

No one is getting Gonzalez before the season.

Yeah, I know he is not going anywhere right now but I really don't think they are going to have Kotchman, Youklis, Beltre and Lowell on the same team. A $12 mil pinch hitter is pretty insane if that is what he ends up if they cant trade him.

Not a bad signing. I just wouldn't have wanted him for 4-5 years. He will put up solid numbers and be great defensively. Sox will have one of the best defenses in baseball this year.

  • Saw a rumor that the Mets were looking at a Luis Castillo for Mike Lowell swap. The deal doesn't really make much sense for either team though you could place Lowell at first and infrequently at third to give David Wright a day off. I can't see what the Red Sox would do with Castillo since they have Pedroia. The only thing that makes sense is that the money matches up on both players.
